ADDRESSEE BONIFACIO of CANOSSA Magdalene‟s brother (Verona, 1776 - 1858) His father OTTAVIO, was son of Carlo and Countess Rosa Colleredo and brother of Jerome who will be his children‟s tutor. He had married an Hungarian Countess, Maria Teresa Szluha, who, in 1779, that is, two years after his sudden death during an excursion in the mountains with his father Carlo, married Marquis Edoardo Zenetti of Mantua. Countess Maria Teresa Szluha‟s relationship with her children and her father-in-law continued to be warm, yet the children were without a mother and the tutor, uncle Jerome, could not fill in the gap. The two sisters, Laura and Magdalene, must have greatly influenced their brother Bonifacio who was helped by their uncle and by a very good teacher and was endowed with deep religious spirit and a sense of balance. He was admired for his uprightness by many sovereigns who were guests in his palace. He was a convinced Christian and Veronese and never gave in to compromise on this matter. For this reason, if like all the others, especially the nobles, he had to bear vexation and heavy fiscal burdens by the foreign rulers, he always waited trustfully for the time of revival and performed with great commitment the numerous civil tasks he was entrusted with. Napoleon granted him the title Count of the Italic Kingdom, and the Emperor of Austria, Francesco Giuseppe, nominated him his personal Councillor. In 1803 he married the young Countess FRANCESCA CASTIGLIONI, daughter of Count Alphonsus and Countess Eleonora Crivelli. He lived in perfect agreement with her until her death which occurred in 1823. In 1824, because of a family situation too complex for orienting his eight children and of many economic problems, he decided to marry the young Marchioness ROSANNA CARLOTTI, born in 1806 of Marquis Antonio and the Countess Pulcheria d‟Arco. The young spouse gave him 3 children and much love as well. TO BONIFACIO OF CANOSSA 351(Venice#1815.01.07) Marquis Bonifacio is put under pressure by his sister. She wants him to find a solution, just as her other friends are doing, to the problem of Santa Lucia. She has already used as a go-between Count Luigi Savorgnan, but since this one didn’t give any answer, Magdalene is asking her brother whom to address. She would like to get from the Holy Father, if he thinks this is the right thing, not only the approval of the Institute, but also the authorization of staying in the convent which had belonged to Sisters whose number is decreasing . My dearest brother, I‟m sending you the envelope I spoke about in my last letter which you must have received by post. Since I had a very good chance of sending you this cover through a reliable person, here I am to beg you for advice first and then, if I need, I will ask you or dear Checchina1 to help me to carry out a business, which you can imagine, as I have told you about, is very much in my heart. You already know that I have rented this monastery of St. Lucy, in the hope (always if the Holy Father2 would be in agreement) of obtaining it gratuitously and permanently from the present Government. I think I have mentioned to you how while I was in Verona I wrote about it to Count Luigi Savorgnan3 who never answered me. I don‟t know whether it was because the letter got lost or because it was not the right moment to deal with such a matter. For me it would have been enough if at the return of Count Alfonso4 he had sent a word for my peace, but on the other hand, since the idea of the Holy Father has been reaffirmed to me and knowing, as I have also told you, the desire expressed by him to see the Institution spread, I am urged, not to say compelled, to handle things in such a way as to avoid that the said premises, at the closing of the Congress5, fail to be destined for the religious, since there are many others and now of those who used to dwell here only nine are left. These are the reasons which would be meaningless without the former ones. I would like therefore, to have your advice on what is best for me to do: either to write again to Count Savorgnan, or to Count Mellerio who has a soft spot for the Works of Charity, or if you think it‟s better that you make Checchina write to Maquis Ghisillieri6 in this case I will send you a short written note. Maybe Count Alfonso has told you something of Savorgnan, or maybe both of them forgot due to too many problems. This can also help me to decide what to do now, but you must give me some indications. What I would like to have, besides the premises, if it is possible according to the mind of the Holy Father, is that the Institution could be, if not approved as it is my wish, at least 1 Boniface‟s wife, Francesca Castiglioni (Ep. He was chased from Bologna, but he left some descendants in many Italian towns. To the branch of Alexandria belongs Pope Pious V (cf. Dizionario Enciclopedico Italiano, above cited, vol. V, p. 336, c. I). welcome and accepted, in order to have the freedom to form it as God wants it. I would see to its habit, etc.., things , however, not to be mentioned, and spread it for the glory of God and the good of the poor. In the meantime, I will try to find out, without saying too much as I freely do with you, since I know you can keep secrets, and come to know as much as possible and I hope God will help me to do what is best. Tell me the truth, dear brother, you wish me a safe journey to San Servolo7 and you are right, but the Lord and He alone has done everything in this work, using me as a mere formula; so, in these ideas that I communicate to your piety and friendship, God alone will do everything, if it is true as I must believe that it will be, if He wants to realise it and perhaps God wants also you to agree to be an instrument of his mercy. I sincerely assure you that if it were not for the fear of lacking in duty, I would do nothing, so accustomed am I to see everything done by the Lord alone, that I always fear, on my part, to damage his designs. I don‟t ask you to forgive me for all the troubles, since I know you do it willingly. Only keep on loving me. My regards to my sister-in-law and to all the household. TO BONIFACIO OF CANOSSA 352(Venezia#1819.04.21) Canossa sends to her brother a copy of the letter she had written to Mr. Francesco Padenghe. He, at the death of Mrs Valenti Marianna, the noble lady of Milan mentioned at the beginning of the letter to Durini of 13 February 1803, had sent to the Marchioness a proxy to settle the transfer of the inheritance to the Valenti nephews. Magdalene asks advice from her brother to clarify the situation. In the meantime she assures him that as soon as she gets the imperial Decree for St. Lucy she will return to Verona. 21 April 1819 My dearest brother, Forgive me, dear brother, if I disturb you once again after having just written to you. You know how much I appreciate and value what you tell me, so on this occasion I have to submit to you some problems concerning the matter of the beloved Mr. Francesco1 whom I would like to help in all possible ways. But since I trust your opinion very much, I let you decide what to do, Nevertheless, if we cannot talk to each other and I cannot tell you the new situation and what I feel we should do.
