Fall 2021 Audition

Information

All auditions for performing groups will be recorded auditions submitted by the student.

Students will need to submit a separate video for each ensemble they are auditioning for. Please see the details below for each ensemble. To submit an audition please follow the instructions below and submit auditions here.

Video audition guidelines Any format of play-a-long accompaniment is acceptable (iRealPro, Aebersold, Band-in-a-Box,etc) as long as it is properly balanced with your instrument and is at or above minimum tempo. Higher quality play-a-longs are preferred.

Audition Music Placement auditions will consist of two tunes from the following list. One must be a blues, the other a standard from the list. Record melody in, solo (1-3 choruses), no head out necessary. Bassists include a walking chorus before solos. Drummers see separate instructions below.

Blues: Billie’s Bounce or Au Privave (Tempo 160 or greater)

Standard: What is This Thing Called Love, Blue Bossa, or Alone Together (Tempo 160 or greater)

Students are allowed to read, but memorization is encouraged!

Drummers

Record yourself playing the following styles and tempos, 16 bars except where indicated. Use a metronome only for count off/tempo reference. Please record all styles in no more than one or two videos, total.

Medium-tempo Swing, quarter note = 120 BPM Swoop J.C. recorded auditions must be Up-tempo Swing, quarter note = 250 BPM submitted by Saturday, August 21, 2021 at Bossa Nova, quarter note = 130 BPM 11:59 p.m.

Funk, quarter note = 90 BPM (8 bars only) Submit audition form and link to recording
