Stanley Crouch hailed Jamal as second only to Charlie Parker as the most influential individual on the development of jazz after 1945. While Jamal was still a teenager in Pittsburgh, the eminent Art Tatum deemed him a “coming great.” After establishing himself as one of Chicago’s leading pianists during the 1950s, his album But Not for Me: Live at the Pershing (1958) remained on Billboard’s album chart for 107 weeks and has become one of the best-selling jazz albums of all-time. However, detractors of Jamal continually questioned his commercial success and claimed that his use of space, light touch, and emphasis on ensemble balance point to a lack of virtuosity. Yet these were the very qualities that first attracted the attention of Miles Davis, who once claimed “all my inspiration today comes from the Chicago pianist Ahmad Jamal.” This dissertation engages Jamal’s life and musical output from several perspectives. Jamal’s biographic narrative is constructed by tracing his youth and musical development in Pittsburgh through the reception of his highly-influential album, At the Pershing, with particular attention to socio-cultural movements accompanying the historical context. Transcribed recordings and interviews are used to examine the extent of Jamal’s conceptual influence on Davis and his sidemen, particularly in how Jamal’s trios of the early 1950s affected the repertoire, phrasing, groove, and overall aesthetic of Davis’s own output. Drawing from Ingrid Monson’s theory of intermusicality, analysis of Jamal’s trio recordings reveals practices of orchestration and iv interaction that challenge conventional notions of collaborative improvisation. Ultimately, this dissertation initiates dialogue on Pittsburgh’s distinguished legacy of jazz pianists and on the applicability of Jamal’s orchestrational concepts in jazz performance pedagogy. v If you would like more information, please contact us at [email protected]. Today is April 6, 1971 and this is Irene Cortinovis of the Archives of the University of Missouri. I have with me today Mr. Chick Finney and Mr. Martin L. MacKay who have agreed to make a tape recording with me for our Oral History Section. They are musicians from St. Louis of long standing and we are going to talk today about their early lives and also about their experiences on the music scene in St. Louis. CORTINOVIS: First, I'll ask you a few questions, gentlemen. Did you ever play on any of the Mississippi riverboats, the J.S, The St. Paul or the President? FINNEY: I never did play on any of those name boats, any of those that you just named, Mrs. Cortinovis, but I was a member of the St. Louis Crackerjacks and we played on kind of an unknown boat that went down the river to Cincinnati and parts of Kentucky. But I just can't think of the name of the boat, because it was a small boat. Do you need the name of the boat? CORTINOVIS: No. I don't need the name of the boat. FINNEY: Mrs. Cortinovis, this is Martin McKay who is a name drummer who played with all the big bands from Count Basie to Duke Ellington.

Some changes have been large, such as the deletion of the three-pulley subchassis and the introduction of the SDS motor controller. Others have been invisible—a change in bearing or spindle material, for example, or the way the bearing attaches to the plinth. And, as longtime Stereophile readers know, I've been upgrading and evolving along with VPI, most recently reporting on the TNT V-HR turntable (Stereophile, December 2001). But about the time I was expecting the next iteration, designer Harry Weisfeld threw me a curve by unveiling a completely new turntable design, the HR-X. First shown in prototype form at Stereophile's Home Entertainment 2002 show in New York City, the HR-X is a stunning, milled-from-aluminum showcase of everything Weisfeld has learned from designing turntables for the past 25 years. Nuts & bolts Although the HR-X is a clean-slate design, it was obviously informed by the TNT. There are four corner towers with internal pneumatic bladders, a huge platter belt-driven by an outboard motor and flywheel, and a JMW tonearm mounted directly to a massive plinth. Beyond that basic configuration, however, everything is different— rethought, improved, optimized, and executed to the highest standard possible. It's immediately obvious that even VPI's workmanship and cosmetics have been raised to new levels: the TNT was well-built and solid; the HR-X is striking and sumptuous.

Despite being nearly blind, Tatum's dexterity made him an excellent player, as can be heard on the 1933 recording 'Tea for Two,' one of his best known songs.Ahead of his time, Art Tatum's techniques would contribute to the development of modern jazz, with aspects of his technique influencing musicians including Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, and Oscar Peterson.     Double Burden: the Black Experience in Pittsburgh

    Double Burden: The Black Experience in Pittsburgh Laurence Glasco History Department University of Pittsburgh Scholarly studies of black Pittsburgh are numerous but uneven in their coverage. In the 1930s the Works Progress Administration (WPA) assembled a rich body of material on the social life, politics, and even folklore of the city's blacks. But the projected general history was never completed, and its unedited pages until recently lay forgotten in the state archives. The gap left by the lack of a general history, moreover, is not filled by specialized studies because these are uneven in their coverage. The nineteenth century, for example, has been especially neglected: the scholarly literature on that period consists of one article, one dissertation, and one undergraduate thesis, all of which focus on the antislavery movement of the Civil War era. The twentieth century, in contrast, has received considerable attention. The period between World War I and World War II has been especially well covered: over one hundred specialized studies--including fifty-six master's theses and dissertations--describe the adjustment problems of black migrants and the emergence of the Hill district as a predominantly black ghetto. The years following World War II also have interested scholars: more than fifty studies--primarily doctoral dissertations--examine the racial dimensions of poverty, segregation, and governmental efforts to alleviate those conditions. Finally, black Pittsburgh from approximately 1930 to 1980 has been visually well documented in the collection of Teenie Harris, a photographer for the Pittsburgh Courier whose 50,000 to 100,000 photographs rival those of New York's Vander Zee collection in portraying the texture of black urban life.

On l’a vu, même Basie et cie doivent dissoudre provisoirement leur big band. Les tournées sont de moins en moins évidentes à organiser.
