The Aeronautical Velocity Challenge is a STEM initiative focussing on addressing Australia’s shortage of scientists and engineers.

On the12th June two teams from Canobolas High entered the challenge at the University of Wollongong and participated in two activities including making a dog fighting balsa model plane and a bottle rocket.

Key elements of design the teams focused on were, velocity for the powered bottle rocket and how to keep the rocket flying at a constant trajectory using tail fins. For the plane there were two areas of focus; speed and height. These areas design for speed and height, affected design in wing shape, looking like a fighter jet and glider respectively.

The teams were successful in completing the tasks and were rewarded with the encouragement award in the bottle rocket competition.

Dear Parents and Members of our School Community

Welcome to week 4. Year 12 students are currently mid-way through their trial HSC exams and I am expecting that there are some wonderful results achieved given the effort that many of our students are putting in to their studies and preparation. This is a wonderful time for all students to begin thinking about preparing for their yearly exams, completing their assessment tasks and ensuring that they are completing all homework.

School Captain Nominations Last Monday, Year 11 students were given the opportunity to make an application to become a student leader in 2015-16. All students who meet the eligibility criteria are able to apply for a school leadership position. I would like parents to encourage interested students who believe they would make a great student leader, to apply for our school leadership positions. Applications close on 17th August.

Congratulations I would like to congratulate Brad Roberts from our high performing athletes program who has been selected in the NSW Combined High School Bowls team today. Brad has just finished playing in the Western NSW team and has gained this prestigious selection. Well done, Brad!

Subject Selections This week students in Years 7,8 and 10 have been undertaking subject selections for elective courses in 2016. All mainstream students will have the opportunity to choose one or more elective courses to complement their studies in 2016. It is essential that students choose their subjects based on their interests, skills and post school pathways. An elective sheet will come home with each student for parents to sign before these electives are finalised. If you have any questions regarding electives, please do not hesitate to contact the school and speak with your child’s year adviser or one of our Deputy Principals.

Enrolments in 2016 As our whole school community is aware, Canobolas offers wonderful programs for all students and 2016 will be no exception. We will be offering a strong academic pathway for all students ranging from gifted and talented to supporting students with additional learning needs, a large and comprehensive vocational pathway including access to TAFE where applicable and a number of sporting and welfare programs to assist students to achieve their full potential. Additionally we will be implementing an innovative STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) program to support all students as well as the Big Picture educational program. A program designed to meet the individual passions of students in an innovative curriculum pathway. If you would like to seek enrolment at The Canobolas Rural Technology High School, please contact the school on 63621677 to make an appointment.

School Canteen Our school canteen now has EFTPOS facilities for students and staff. This is another exciting addition to our new canteen and I am sure one which will further support our P&C in providing a wonderful service to our students.

I hope you have a wonderful fortnight and I look forward to speaking with you in week 6. With my warmest regards

NSW rechoirs Ellena Hicks!

Year 10 student Ellena Hicks has been accepted into the NSW State Choir for 2015. The choir program is open to students in Years 8-12 from government high schools across the state. Students are selected for inclusion in this choir on their vocal ability and experience. Ellena has performed with Gondwana National Choirs for the last two years and has been successful in gaining a place in the State choir on her first audition for the program this year.

Ellena is one of 80 students selected from schools throughout NSW to benefit from this musical experience. These dedicated and talented choristers will sing challenging repertoire and work with some of Australia’s leading choral directors for 3 days in October. They will perform in concerts at the Sydney Opera House as part of the 2015 Festival of Choral Music.

Ellena shared her exciting news this week just after completing her Australian Music Examinations Board Grade 5 Voice exam at the Orange Regional Conservatorium.

Congratulations Ellena! Well-deserved success and exciting opportunities for such a talented young lady.

Dancers Dominate at West Tigers Dance Spectacular!

On Friday 31st July, 44 dancers travelled to Leichhardt Oval to participate in the West Tigers Dance Spectacular. All the dancers were super excited to have the opportunity to cheerlead at a NRL football game, together with 350 other dancers. With only two weeks of rehearsals, the dancers did a fantastic job to pick up the choreography from a video sent by the organiser.

The girls were able to get into the mood as we arrived early and were able to sit on the hill and cheer on the under 20s teams. As night fell, it was time to meet with the organiser Kym Roebuck and collect our t-shirts, pom poms and of course practise with the 300 other dancers. The girls’ behaviour was outstanding whilst practising and their ability to adapt and adjust movement patterns was fantastic. The leadership from the senior dancers was pleasing to watch.

Finally it was time to take to the field for the half time entertainment, with Canobolas taking the field first which was exciting! The girls performed outstandingly, with a high level of enthusiasm, which was captured on the big screen!

After the big performance we headed back onto the bus, but not before a quick photo with Kym, who commented to the girls, as well as putting on facebook, how impressed she was with the Canobolas Rural Technology High School girls’ ability, behaviour and performance level.

Some very exhausted dancers found it a long trip home, arriving in Orange at 1:30am. Congratulations to all participants. You respresented the school with pride. A big thank you to Miss Kate Foran for preparing the girls for the spectacular and a special mention to Miss Morrissey for coming along and being our groupie.

Dance Success Continues for Canobolas - Wellington Dance Eisteddfod Report

On Monday 3rd of August, Year 8, 9, 10 and the CHPA dance troupes performed at the Wellington Dance Eisteddfod. All performers were outstanding and represented the school with pride. Year 8 were first to take the stage and were able to adjust their spacers as they were missing 3 girls from their dance. This didn’t affect their routine, being placed 1st in their section on 93 points. The adjudicator commented on their strong patterns and lovely costumes that were ‘very affected’. Well done girls!

Year 9 followed with their very powerful group dance, going up against Tottenham Central School in their section. Their performance was outstanding and came 1st on 96 points. The adjudicator commented on confident dancers and the powerful energy they brought to the stage. Congratulations dancers on your performance.

Year 10 and the CHPA dancers went head to head in their section, both so very confident and excited with two very different dances. The CHPA girls went first and were very nervous. With no faults throughout their dance, they were so very happy with the performance they had been working on, early on Wednesday mornings. Then Year 10 hit the stage, with their powerful energy and aggressiveness. They came out with a bang from start to finish. By only 1 point the CHPA dancers came out with the win with 93 points, followed very closely by the Year 10 group on 92 points in second place. The adjudicator did mention it came down to her personal style. Pleasing comments for both groups on the amazing costumes and control of movements show their personal skills developing.

All dancers are now very excited to hit up Orange Dance Eisteddfod and hopefully come home with more wins. Good luck to all dancers!!

Premier’s Sporting Challenge “Get Active” Session with Integra Wellbeing!

This term we have 130 students and 36 staff participating in the annual NSW Premier’s Sporting Challenge. The challenge aims to engage students and staff in sport and physical activity over a 10 week period. As part of the challenge, we are to track and record the amount of physical activity we are doing each week, to then set personal goals to improve these levels, enhancing the likelihood of leading active, healthy lifestyles.

Last Wednesday 29th July, a team of personal trainers from Integra Health and Fitness club ran the first of three “Get Active” day for the PSC for all staff and students at lunchtime. Anthony with his team of personal trainers set up a 15 station circuit which would challenge a range of different fitness components.

The circuit couldn’t be done without a little bit of healthy competition- students were split into groups of 3-4 and each group had a teacher. The students certainly set the pace of each station and maintained this throughout the 40 minute session.

A huge thanks goes out to Anthony and his team from Integra Health and Fitness club, Miss Rose and the English Faculty for assisting in making the day happen and all the students and staff who took part in the session. Looking forward to our next “Get Active” session in Week 6!

Thank you Integra Health and Fitness Club!! Western Athletics - Run, Canobolas! RUN!

On Friday 24th July, students from Canobolas High School travelled to Dubbo to compete in the Western Region Athletics Trials. After an early morning team building exercise, the school bus made its way through the foggy morning to experience the new athletic facilities at Barden Park.

After setting up the school marquee, our 18 students worked out when and where their events were on. Miss Morrissey found her Javelin hot spot, where she was running the male Javelin events throughout the day, scoring free food and some awesome company.

Canobolas experienced a number of success stories over the day, with 5 students successfully qualifying for the CHS State Athletics Carnival. Congratulations to Jack Connors (100m, 200m, Shot Put, Long Jump and Discus), Ashlee Vito (100m, 200m, Shot Put, and Long Jump), Nick Shield (100m), Kane Mitchell (400m) and Jeremy Boulton (Long Jump), who all have the opportunity to compete at the next level in early September. Additionally, Jack O’Malveney managed a third place in High Jump in his first Western Athletics Carnival.

Hopes of a quick and speedy get away before the conclusion of the carnival vanished as the last events of the day drew closer. Naturally, the one event which was running late was the event we were waiting on, with Maddy Gogala waiting a long stint for the 17+ year discus. Fortunately, she managed to secure her third place with some great throws.

Congratulations to all students who competed throughout the day. You were fine representatives of Canobolas and it was a privilege taking you all away for the day. A huge thank you to Mrs Udy and Miss Morrissey, without whom this trip would not have been possible, nor run as smoothly as it did. Best of luck to students working towards the CHS State Carnival.
