Bumpus, National President [email protected] 4ID History - March Key Events 16 Mar 2004 – In Tikrit, Iraq, MG Ray Odierno of 4ID transferred authority from 4ID/TF Ironhorse to MG John Batiste with 1ID/TF Danger, marking the official end of 4ID’s first tour in Iraq. 21 Mar 1967 – Units of 3rd Brigade earned the Presidential Unit Citation at the Battle of Soui Tre where over 600 NVA and VC troops were killed. 22 Mar 1967 – The Medal of Honor was earned by 1SG David H. McNerney, with A/1-8 INF, Republic of Vietnam. 25 Mar 2021 – National Medal of Honor Day. This date was chosen because the first Medal of Honor was presented on March 25, 1863 during the Civil War. 29 Mar 1945 – 4ID crossed the Rhine River, over the heavy pontoon bridge at Worms, Germany. We are fortunate to have three living 4ID MOH recipients as we recognize Medal of Honor Day on March 25th. They are SSG Clinton L. Romesha, SSG Ty Michael Carter, and CPT Florent Groberg earned for actions in Afghanistan. Information on all of our MOH recipients can be found on the 4IDA website. Did you know that Evans Army Community Hospital at Fort Carson is dedicated in memory of Medal of Honor recipient Specialist Fourth Class Donald W. Evans Jr. (posthumously) a Medic with Company A, 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry, 4th Infantry Division, for action on 27 January 1967, Republic of Vietnam. See his citation at this link: https://www.4thinfantry.org/content/evans-donald-w-jr-posthumously March 29 Vietnam War Veterans Day National Vietnam War Veterans Day is observed every year on March 29, to unite Americans to thank and honor Vietnam veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice. The Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017 was signed into law by 45th U.S. President Donald J. Trump, designating every March 29 as National Vietnam War Veterans Day. March 29 was chosen as National Vietnam War Veterans Day because on March 29, 1973, Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV) was disbanded and the last U.S. combat troops departed the Republic of Vietnam. Orme Street - Arlington, VA 22204 The 2021 National Reunion will feature two very special events; a visit to the new National U.S. Army Museum at Ft Belvoir, VA, and the 20th Anniversary Re-dedication of the 4ID Arlington Monument; plus all the traditional proceedings. Note: The Reunion Schedule of Events has changed, moving the Rededication to Saturday and shifting other events. We call on our members who are also members of these associated groups to encourage them to schedule their 2021 events with us. We have negotiated a great rate and location for this event. In a recent Malwarebytes’ newsletter, it is reported that Gmail users received 18 million daily malware and phishing emails during the early months of the pandemic (starting last April), and add to that another 240 million daily spam messages. Watch out f or COVID-19 scams - Ignore offers to get the vaccine early, for a fee — whether via computer, phone or social media. Be aware of gif t card tricksters - Don’t buy gift cards or provide gift card information to anyone you don’t know. Stay away f rom risky connections - Avoid unknown networks and ensure devices are not set to automatically join when you're not home. Regularly change passwords. Consistently changing your password means that even if someone finds an old, saved password, it will no longer be useful. Just be caref ul out there! Remember to check your membership expiration date on your Ivy Leaves mailing label or in your online account profile on the website. Membership Renewals Fort Carson News Army Best Medic Competition Winners Announced FORT GORDON, Georgia – Sgt. Tyrel Trainor (far Left) and Spc. Anchor Jennison (second from Left), both from 4th Infantry Division units out of Fort Carson, Colorado, are the winners of the 2021 Command Sgt. Maj. Jack L. Clark, Jr., U.S. Army Best Medic Competition (ABMC) that was held at Fort Gordon, Georgia. Trainor, who is a 68W Combat Medic said, “Winning matters.” Trainor’s teammate was Spc. Anchor Jennison who said “It’s humbling to be here,” The Soldiers operated in a demanding, continuous, and realistic operational environment that included challenges such as a simulated combat casualty care, a 28-station obstacle course, night land navigation, water survival which included jumping off of a diving board into 12-feet of water. Hodne, (pictured) to become commanding general, 4th Inf antry Division and Fort Carson, Fort Carson, Colorado. BG Hodne’s previous assignments include Commander of the Stryker Brigade Combat Team at Fort Carson, CO, and as Deputy Commanding General for Maneuver for the 4th Infantry Division and Fort Carson. Welcome home General! The current commanding general of the 4th Infantry Division and Fort Carson, MG Matthew W. McFarlane will become deputy commanding general, U.S. Army Pacific Command, Fort Shafter, Hawaii. We wish him all the best in his new assignment. Steadfast & Loyal. Job well done! Smith Memorial Scholarship and the Annual Educational Scholarships. Applications for the E.R. Smith Memorial Scholarship are available on the website and may be submitted annually at anytime. Applications for Annual Educational Scholarships must be mailed to the Secretary of the Scholarship Committee bef ore the June 15 deadline each year using the current years' application form. The 2021 Annual Scholarship Application f orms are published in the Ivy Leaves and available on the 4IDA website.
