A Very Special “Ugly Sweater” Blues Showcase! A festive holiday blues experience captured by blues photographer Mike McNett. Ugly Sweater History by Eric Steiner Until I saw Mike McNett’s photos of an ugly sweater-themed blues show at the Half Lion Pub in Kent, I never really thought about ugly Christmas sweaters at blues venues. I understand that this tradition has roots in the National Lampoon movie franchise with Chevy Chase, the Bill Cosby Show and special events like a holiday fundraiser at Vancouver’s fabled Commodore Ballroom (where I saw Willie Dixon in shortly after I arrived in Seattle in 1980). Mike’s pictures capture the fun of a great evening at the Half Lion Pub in Kent, and include Brian Lee wearing a distinctive sweater featuring “Rat Fink” that brought me back to the comic books of the legendary Ed “Big Daddy” Roth when I was learning about counterculture icons growing up on Chicago’s far South Side.
