This current newsletter is inænded to update all readers of the most significant developments since then. Of course, those of you who take British Wildlife magazine may already be awarg tlrough my 'rWildlife Notes', of some of the information contained herein. The success ofthe scheme relies upon your endeavours and, once again, I am indebted to the many of you who have submitted records and also to Paul Pearce-Kelly, Rachel Jones and Bryan Pinchen for their contributions on rare species. SUMMARY OF HIGHLIGHTS In comparison with recent years, the summer of 1998 was disappointing, although parts of southern England did have some reÍlsonably warm and dry weather during August and early September which is probably the most important period for the breeding success of many species. It was, perhaps, not surprising that there were fewer records submitted during 1998 as compared with the previous yàr but, even so, there were still several thousand which involved a total of 349 new l0hn squares (including 68 post-1970 refinds). Of these, 195 (including 23 post-1970s) were for 1998, including first ever records for Roesel's Bush Cricket, Metrioptera roeselii, in the Channel Islands, Long-winged Conehead, Conocephalus discolor, in Cambridgeshire and Lesnets Earwig, Forfcula lesnei,in Worcestershire and also a national first for this latter species in lreland. Additionally, we had the most northerly yet records for Lesser Marsh Grasshopper, Chorthippus albomarginqtus. -

A landscape detective is defined as a species that helps determine how to manage landscapes and to design and manage protected area networks. Life history and behavioural features of jaguar make them potentially suitable as landscape species. The main aim of this study is to use the jaguar as a landscape detective to develop a network of core protected areas for the Upper Paraná Region, which lies in the highly threatened Atlantic Forest of Brazil. Information was collected on jaguar density and home range, which was combined with habitat requirements of the species and GIS-generated maps of land cover to develop a map of habitat suitability. This map was used to understand the spatial structure of the jaguar metapopulation, identifying habitat patches of high suitability where jaguar populations exist and are likely to survive over the long-term. Camera trapping and capture-recapture models were used to derive jaguar population size in Morro do Diabo State Park (MDSP). -

THE CURRENT STATUS OF ORTHOPTEROID INSECTS IN BRITAIN AND IRELAND by Peter G. Sutton, Björn C. Beckmann & Brian Nelson INTRODUCTION This article provides an overview of the changes that have occurred within the orthopteroid fauna of Britain and Ireland since the last distribution atlas was published in 1997 (Haes & Harding, 1997). It provides the current IUCN status of the scarce and threatened species in Britain in accordance with their recent reassessment (Sutton, 2015a) and discusses the future prognosis for this group of insects in Britain and Ireland. It also highlights recent developments of the Orthoptera Recording Scheme with particular reference to the collection of distribution map data using new technologies. Changes to the orthopteroid fauna of Britain and Ireland have been assessed in the landmark publications by Ragge (1965), Marshall & Haes (1988), Haes & Harding (1997) and more recently, Benton (2012), and have also been comprehensively reviewed by Marshall (1974, 2001, 2010). In addition, a regular and ongoing summary of these changes has been provided by the Grasshoppers and Relatives section of British Wildlife magazine (Haes, 1990‒1995; Widgery 1995‒2002; Sutton, 2002‒2016), and in the Orthoptera Recording Scheme newsletters (1‒22 (Haes, 1979‒1995); 23‒28 (Widgery, 1996‒2002) and 29‒33 (Beckmann & Sutton, 2013‒2016)). A free parking is available in front of Campus II. The next airports are Luxembourg Findel, Frankfurt Hahn (note that this airport is closer to Trier than to Frankfurt and mainly used by Ryanair) or Saarbrücken. During weekends, a direct bus connection between the city center and campus 2 exists only for Saturdays. In this case, bus line 85 leaves the city center hourly between 10:10 a.m. and 19:10 p.m (bus station "Porta nigra"). A return to the city center is possible hourly between 09:59 a.m. and 18:59 p.m. Campus 2 can be reached earlier/later, more frequent and on Sundays by the bus line 83, bus station “Kohlenstraße”. Note that you have to calculate a ten minute walk from the bus station to campus 2. Both bus lines drive along the central train station. Some introduced species overcome environmental barriers and establish populations beyond the point of introduction, being therefore designated as invasive (Richardson et al. 2000). Biological invasions are one of the major threats to biological diversity and to human well‐being (Vilà and Hulme 2017) and considered one of the main drivers of global environmental change in the Anthropocene (Steffen et al. 2011; Capinha et al. 2015). Invasive alien species cause negative environmental impacts in natural ecosystems, with consequences to the conservation of biodiversity and human livelihoods in Brazil (Leão et al. 2011; Souza et al. 2018). Abstract: Gracilinanus microtarsus, from the Atlantic Forest and G. agilis, widespread in central Brazil in the Cerrado and in the northeastern Caatinga are two small Neotropical arboreal opossum species not frequently recorded in simpatry. Here we report eight G. agilis specimens from three localities and 17 G. microtarsus, from 10 localities, all in Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and Bahia states. Species proper identification followed diagnostic characters as appearance of dorsum pelage, ocular-mark, ears and tail lengths and size proportion of the posteromedial vacuities in cranium. Chromosomes in metaphases of five specimens were obtained for both species. Our records extend the previous known geographical distribution of G. microtarsus to Chapada Diamantina, in Bahia State and report the occurrence of both species in simpatry. G. microtarsus, in coastal area, was captured in dense ombrophilous and in semideciduous forests, in deciduous seasonal forest and Cerradão in Chapada Diamantina. -

Although 95% of mammal species were represented by PAs, most of them had less than 10% of their distribution range protected by these areas. A total of 94 critical areas for mammal conservation–representing 49.60% of the total PAs were identified. Most of these areas were located at endangered ecoregions. We recommend that conservationists and policy makers should identify critical areas in order to guarantee biodiversity fluxes among landscapes, and enhance the connectivity between PAs to increase biodiversity protection and conservation.
