March 8, 2021, Issue 746 CRS Research: Going Deeper Highly anticipated every year, the CRS Research Presentation has been impactful enough to create noticeable shifts within the format. This year’s version, “The Road Forward” presented by NuVoodoo Media, surveyed more than 3,000 listeners in unearthing so much information, one viewing likely meant missing a lot. Country Aircheck spoke with NuVoodoo EVP/Research & Co- Founder Leigh Jacobs and Big Machine GM and CRS Research Committee Chair Clay Hunnicutt – who’ve been immersed in the data for weeks – for clarity on key takeaways. They’ve Got Personality: Contrasting results from two questions stood out in a related way to Jacobs. When respondents were asked if they thought they would hear more songs they liked on FM radio or via DSP, the DSPs were favored at 64%. But when asked if they preferred to listen to music on FM or DSP, FM won 53% to 47%. “If we pare it down to just a playlist, we’re on equal footing Leigh Jacobs with technology that’s coming to the fight with a lot more armament than we have,” Jacobs On Cloud Kline: 19th & Grand’s Tenille Arts (l) and producer says. “Having that human element makes it Alex Kline celebrate the first Top 10 song that was both produced just that much more relatable. It’s that added and performed by solo women, “Somebody Like That,” on value that stations provide.” International Women’s Day. Check out Kline’s “My Tunes” here. The data further confirmed air talent to be an essential factor for radio (see graph page 10). A full 57% felt that DJs make listening a more enjoyable experience, while only 8% felt Antman’s Post-Radio Podcast Clay Hunnicutt stations would be better without them. “Were On the day of his exit from iHeartMedia, former KASE & KVET/ air personalities as important as we thought Austin PD Anthony ”Antman” Allen was discussing the idea they were?” asks Hunnicutt. “This came back with a resounding of starting a podcast with ‘yes,’ and that’s a huge point of differentiation for the radio side. industry vet Skip Bishop. And you see the DSPs responding to that with what they’re trying Although Allen had given to do.” the idea some thought in Solid Gold: Hunnicutt points out another surprisingly strong the past, he wasn’t sure result in the research: the power of the gold category. “We’ve always what he’d talk about. “I heard that Country’s appeal is [ages] ‘8 to 80,’” he says, pointing to didn’t want to do one for high scores for all eras of music across the the sake of doing one,” Allen (l) with Granger Smith. he says. So, Bishop threw out an idea: incorporate his passion for photography with the relationships he’d built in the industry. The rest is browser history. “We’re always looking for new ways to connect in a real, tangible way with those we admire or find encouraging that live their life in the public eye,” begins Allen. “Clearly, there’s a certain filmy barrier to social media that leaves us wondering what’s real and what’s presented through a filter.” Call Me Maybe: Drawing from his background in photography and connection with artists strengthened by a 23-year radio career, Picture This! features guests picking 10-12 photos that spark a memory they then A few of Rice’s share. The podcast photos. launched Feb. 9 with Chase Rice, who reminisced about his time on Survivor, writing songs with Florida Georgia Line at the beginning of their careers “because no one else would give us a chance” and what he learned facing backlash from video taken at a concert during the pandemic. Watch Rice’s episode here, Dustin Lynch here and Granger Smith here. “The guests that have been on the podcast already, their numbers are in my phone,” Allen emphasizes. “I’m not saying that in a bragging way, but because they weren’t a PR set-up. They were a phone call telling them the idea and them saying yes to their friend.” Without his years in radio, Allen isn’t sure those connections, and the podcast itself, could have happened. “It’s led me to a place of trust with many of our guests, connected me with people behind the scenes I may have never met and, not to mention, helped me provide for my family.” He admits radio was a “great education full of successes, heartbreaks, triumphs and failures.” Pod Couple: Starting a podcast was “like a jumbled plate of spaghetti,” he jokes. “The twists and turns have been endless. We’ll get to one part and think, ‘Haven’t we already been here?’ and the answer is yes. A couple of times, as a matter of fact. But, it’s part of the process. The challenges are what makes this fun.” Allen exited iHeartMedia in November, launched Picture This! Feb. 9 and “there’s not a day in those 81 I didn’t touch something that had to do with this new venture.” Allen reiterates the need for “champions,” those who get the idea and vision, see what you don’t and will help you through challenges. “I’ve used this quote a few times, but it’s so applicable here: ‘If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together!’” Goals and hopes for the podcast are still forming in its infancy: “We’ve got several more diaper changes in our future.” He continues, “But, we see the potential. We see the unique qualities that keep the audience’s interest, and we’re excited about where it’s going.” Hopefully that future includes a visit from Allen’s dream guest: Dwayne The Rock Johnson. “He’s a great storyteller, and I’m sure has a plethora of photos to choose from.” As to whether or not he sees himself returning to radio, Allen never says never. “Radio wasn’t gone the day iHeart and I parted ways. Radio, or the idea of radio – the one that was there when we fell in love – had been slowly moving stuff out of the house every day for 23 years. I miss what it used to be. But, this time, I don’t see us getting back together.” Reach Allen here; watch and listen to Picture This! here. —Caitlin DeForest
