THE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

By Ursula Sheaffer

This summer went so fast…I blinked and it was over! I can’t say it wasn’t fun though. I attended more bluegrass festivals over the summer than I had in 41 years. Seriously, I had been away from the festival scene since I started working and got married. I know that may seem odd for someone who loves bluegrass as much as I do, however I was raising a family and just had to put everything else on the back burner, so to speak. I like to be as involved as much as possible now. If you want to be part of the bluegrass scene, please think about joining the board. We would love to have you be part of the board. To get your feet wet, think about becoming a trustee.

We are closing in on the new concert year. Several new bands are going to be coming to see us. We hope you can support them so they can feel the strong bluegrass spirit we have here in Central Pa. Dick Beckley works very hard to bring a variety of bands to us each year. I know the newer ones will become new favorites. So even if you haven’t heard of them yet, please come out and support them. We would never bring a less than stellar band to you! And know this, we are learning about and watching these new bands quite a bit. We go to their shows and research their music online so we know they are top notch. We only have 10 shows normally. We have to make the most out of those shows for attendance to keep the association running. Believe me when I say this, we could not do it if not for your support. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your membership and attendance.

I want to say a huge thanks for all the volunteers that helped with the picnic also. You really an- swered to call and it touched my heart. Thank you!

I want to personally thank the Laird family for allowing Seven Mountains Bluegrass Association to be part of the Dick Laird Memorial Scholarship. We feel this is an honor. Thank you, each and every person that made a donation in his memory.

In loving memory of our long standing member Dick Laird, Seven Mountains Bluegrass Assocation is accepting donations for the scholarship program in his memory. We have had enough donations for several full scholarships to be awarded. We hope that this will be something we can provide more than once. Dick was always very supportive of SMBA. He was a mentor and wonderful example to many musicians.

As you know, Dick Laird played with the band Bluestone for over 26 years along with his two sons, Heath and Jeff. He is missed dearly. In accord however with Dick’s wishes for the band to continue, Tom Cook has been selected to play the mandolin and contribute to the vocal talents of this outstanding group. Tom’s talent is well known and he will be a fine addition.

Page 4 BOOK REVIEW BY WALT CRIDER

John Duffey’s Bluegrass Life

Review by Walt Crider

John Duffey, vocalist, instrumentalist, entertainer, luthier and labeled The Father of Modern Bluegrass Music. Almost everyone .enjoyed John Duffey on stage. He could hold an audience in his hand. Not many books make me laugh out loud, but this one did repeatedly. Whether he knew it or not, many people went to his shows or even to a festival just to see him. This book by Stephan Moore and G.T. Keplinger, with a Foreword by two-time bluegrass Hall of Famer, Tom Gray, tells all about John from his early days of playing music until his untimely death at only 62 years old, two months after his induction into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Honor. He was an only child, and to a father who was an Opera singer and sang at the Metropolitan Opera. He did not like any kind of popular music. His grandfather was a preacher. Starting in the early 1950s, John played with local musicians in the Washington D.C. area. These bases lead to the formation of The Country Gentlemen with Charlie Waller. After many s was invited to jam with local pickers who eventually became The Seldom Scene. Many were unsure that this band would succeed, but the members didn’t care as this was a fun thing. However, as they performed in clubs they became more popular than expected. The Seldom Scene began breaking the mold even more so by performing songs written or recorded by Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Eric Clapton and Linda Ronstadt to name a few. They would include many bluegrass standards on their setlist. The band went through a variety of personnel changes, as all bands do, but continued to play songs not expected yet pleasing to the ear. There are quotes by John throughout the book in italic print making them easy to follow and understand. This book goes beyond John’s part in the Seldom Scene with members up to today. It also has an extensive recording discography which could be useful for airplay. This is a most enjoyable book about a truly unique man. Oct 12 Williamson Branch

Our October band to open up our winter concert series will be Williamson Branch, continuing our efforts to bring new young, traditional talent to our stage. Debbie and Kevin Williamson are veterans of the bluegrass scene and their 3 daughters are following in their footsteps as talented vocalists and musicians. Williamson branch consists of Kevin on guitar, Debbie on mandolin, their 3 daughters, 20-year-old Melody on fiddle and vocals,16-year-old Kadence on Bass and vocals, 10-year-old Caroline on fiddle and vocals, and 19-year-old Anthony Howell on banjo. I think our attendees will enjoy these talented young folks just as they have Flatt Lonesome and Trinity River Band the last few years. Come on out for the first show of our new season to see this fine band. Early arrivals will also be entertained by two of our young scholarship recipients, Canyon and Autumn Moore of Buffalo Mountain Music prior to the main band.

Nov 9 Sideline

Sideline has quickly become one of the most popular bands on the bluegrass circuit over the last few years. They have also become favorites of our audience, appearing here several times before. Led by former III Tyme Out banjo player and vocalist, Steve Dilling, all-star bass player Jason Moore, and guitar wizard Skip Cherryholmes . They are joined by Zack Arnold on mandolin and lead vocals, Barry Coe on guitar and lead vocals, and their newest member, Daniel Greeson on fiddle. This is a powerhouse band that started out as a Sideline project of several players in other bands, thus getting their name, but they quickly found that they were destined for much bigger things. This band is anything but a Sideline project and anyone who has seen them will quickly agree. Make no mistake, this is a can’t miss concert to attend.

Nov 30 David Parmley & Cardinal Tradition

David Parmley and Cardinal Tradition says it all. David was the lead vocalist for the entire time the famous Bluegrass Cardinals were a band in the 70’s,80’s, and 90’s, one of the top bands in bluegrass. His present band, Cardinal Tradition looks and sounds like the famous Bluegrass Cardinals did. Cardinal Tradition does a lot of the songs the Bluegrass Cardinals performed, as well. You will not want to miss this show. David is the lead vocalist on guitar and possessor of one of the purest country voices anywhere. He is backed by the fantastic Steve Day on fiddle and vocals, Shayne Bartley on mandolin and vocals, Ron Spears on bass and vocals, and Dale Perry on banjo and bass vocals. The musicianship and harmony of this band is unmatched. Attending a concert by Cardinal Tradition is like turning the clock back 30 or 40 years. Just the kind of music our members love. If you like 3- and 4-part harmony at its best, this show is the one you will want to attend.

Dec 14 Nothin’Fancy

This fine band is no stranger to our stage, having played here many times in past years. Always a favorite of our audience, they have made a few changes since they were last here, but still have the same sound and still never fail to completely entertain with great music and good humor. The lead vocalist is founding member, Mike Andes on mandolin and lead vocals. Longtime member Chris Sexton, who is a classical trained violinist is on fiddle and vocals. The rest of the band are brothers Caleb and James Cox and the newest member, ETSU student, Jacob Flick. These young men are 3 more examples of how bluegrass will survive in the coming years with this kind of talent coming on board in bands across the country. Caleb is on lead and harmony vocals and lends his guitar and dobro skills to the band. James keeps them on the beat with his excellent bass work and Jacob lends his very skillful banjo playing to complete the mix. Come on out and welcome Nothin’ Fancy back to our SMBA stage.

MAC WISEMAN, BLUEGRASS ICON By Bill Aldinger

What is better to do then write this article on a rainy day in sunny Florida and listen to Mac CD's. After all, Florida is the lightening capital of the world. Mac was more than a Bluegrass icon. In my opinion, he was a country icon and a pop icon. Mac could crossover genres with the best of the best. Mac successfully recorded in all three genres as well as gospel.

Mac had polio as a baby rendering a weakness in one leg. Born in 1925, long before Jonas Salk developed Polio Vaccine in 1953. Mac attended Shenandoah Conservatory of Music, leading to a job as a disc-jockey in 1944. He preferred to work as a solo artist however, worked with bands including his own, The Country Boys. His first big job as lead singer was with Molly O' Day in 1946. He made his first recording in 1948 as a bass player. Mac's repertoire included top name bands like and Flatt and Scruggs to name a few. He played with top artist, Bill Carlisle, Cedrick Rainwater, Eddie Adcock, Allen Shelton, Buck Graves and more then I can list here. In 1953 Mac’s releases were listed in Billboard Magazine as “Territorial Best Sellers.”

In 1966 Mac was co-founder of the CMA, Association. The same year he sponsored his own Bluegrass Festival in Renfro Valley, Kentucky. Mac co-managed the worlds Original Jamboree at Wheeling, West . Started his own record company, Wise Records. Also performed at the , Old Dominion Barn Dance and too many to list. He spent time in Hollywood when sold to Paramount Pictures. Mac was said to be the first to use two Fiddles and later a dobro in bluegrass music. Buck Graves was the dobro Player. Mac co-founded IBMA in 1986. In 1992 narrated the documentary High Lonesome. In 1993 he was elected to IBMA Music Hall of Honor. Awarded a National Heritage Fellowship by the National Endowment for The Arts. (2008) In 2014 elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame. Mac's Life was music for over 70 years. “Tis Sweet to be Remembered “
