Gene Watson Fan Club Newsletter GENE WATSON FAN CLUB NEWSLETTER 2017 R.O.P.E. ENTERTAINER OF THE YEAR—GENE WATSON! OCTOBER, NOVEMBER, DECEMBER 2017 - VOLUME 53 Dear Friends – Is it just me or has this year flown by! So many great things happened this year from a #1 for my Gospel single “Help Me” to getting the chance to appear on Country’s Family Reunion with my friend, Joe Nichols. We wrapped up the Gene & Moe Show and by the way, those shows will air again sometime on RFD-TV. I’ll let you know when we find out the air dates for those. We’re delighted to be closing out this year with the release of my second Gospel album “My Gospel Roots” on December 8th! As many of you already know, the pre-release for this CD has been going on at my website and those of you that pre-ordered should start receiving your autographed copy soon. Thanks to all of you that gave us nice comments on the video we made for the single “Old Roman Soldier”. If you haven’t seen it yet, you can check that out at www.YouTube.com/GeneWatsonVideos. This Gospel CD has been a special one for me. I really thought long and hard on which songs I wanted to record, keeping in mind many of the songs that my family and I sang in our little church with my parents leading us in song at the pulpit. On the back of the CD cover, you’ll see a photo of my parents and there’s also a photo of the actual Jesus Name Mission church with 3 pastors from over 30 years there. There are a few new songs I just wanted to include along with many classics you’ll know and I hope you enjoy my versions of those. As we close out 2017, please know that I appreciate your continued support for “real” country music. It’s your dedica- tion to this music that will keep it alive and well. The band and I are going to be traveling as much or more in 2018 so we hope we’ll be near your town and you can come out and see us. We wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! And the winner is…... On October 5th, Gene attended the R.O.P.E. Awards in Nashville (Reunion of Profes- sional Entertainers) at the invitation of Jeannie Seely and her husband, Gene Ward. Gene was surprised and delighted when both he AND Jeannie won the award for Entertainer of the Year. This was the first time in the long history of the awards that there was a tie. Gene said it couldn’t be more fitting that he would share this very special award with one of his best friends in the music business, Ms. Jeannie Seely. Highlights from the R.O.P.E. Awards Jeannie Seely, Mac Wiseman and Gene Watson strike a pose after Jeannie and Gene accept their Entertainer of the Year trophies. Mac Wiseman, honored Country music legend, Leona Williams, pre- that same evening for his legendary career, was the upright bass player in the sented the evening’s most prestigious award, band of country singer Molly O'Day . When Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs left Entertainer of the Year, to both Gene and Bill Monroe's band, Wiseman became the guitarist for their new band, Jeannie. the Foggy Mountain Boys . Later he played with Bill Monroe 's Bluegrass Boys and he was also very involved in starting the Country Music Association in Nashville, TN. Gene was delighted to visit with Hall of Famer, Jerry Kennedy. Jerry played guitar on all songs on Gene’s “Honky Tonk Crazy” album. Kristofferson , Bob Dylan, Ringo Starr , Tammy Wynette and Roy Orbison . His dobro work on Jeannie C. Riley 's " Harper Valley PTA " is considered a classic. Kennedy played on or produced nearly all of the country mu- sic records of Jerry Lee Lewis. He has pro- duced The Statler Bros., Reba McEntire, John- ny Rodriguez, Tom T. Hall, Connie Smith, Moe Bandy and Roger Miller just to name a few. Making Gene laugh was Hee Haw star, Roni Stoneman. Roni is the young- est daughter of "Pop" Stoneman , patriarch of the Stoneman Family , one of the most famous family groups in early country music. Roni is also a super talented banjo player, making records for both the bluegrass and country markets. Working Hard in Nashville! Robby Lynn, host of “Sunday’s Kind of Country” TV Gene spent a fun afternoon visiting with Devon O’Day of and Radio show, poses with Gene after they taped WSM-AM in Nashville where Devon debuted a number of the show. KFDI/Wichita APD Carol Hughes: I about fell off my sofa when they opened the show with “Pledge Allegiance To The Hag.” They included songs that would never be on an awards show. Jason Aldean’s medley was fantastic. I loved the Milestone Awards. Those artists were not just brought onstage as a courtesy but they were showcased in a wonderful way and given a huge spotlight to show just why they were Milestone winners.

  • THE MUSICAL FEATURES of 2015'S TOP-RANKED COUNTRY SONGS
THE MUSICAL FEATURES OF 2015’s TOP-RANKED COUNTRY SONGS By Mason Taylor Allen Senior Honors Thesis Department of Music University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill April 22, 2016 Approved: Dr. Jocelyn R. Neal, Thesis Advisor Dr. Allen Anderson, Reader Dr. Andrea Bohlman, Reader © 2016 Mason Taylor Allen ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Mason Taylor Allen: The Musical Features of 2015’s Top-Ranked Country Songs Under the direction of Dr. Jocelyn R. Neal The 2015 top-ten country songs analyzed in this study are characterized by the various formats of their song form, harmonies, and lyrics. This thesis presents a comprehensive study of the structure and narratives in sixty-seven songs that summarizes the distinctive features within those domains of contemporary commercial country music. A detailed description of the norm along with identifiable trends emerges. The song form that features most prominently in this repertory includes a verse-chorus-bridge form with three iterations of the chorus, an intro and outro section, and instrumental sections immediately following each chorus. The top-ten country songs have varying degrees of departure from this typical model. Primary features of the harmonies of these top songs include the frequent use of a double-tonic complex, the absence of a 5-1 authentic cadence, the same chord progression throughout the verse, chorus, and bridge, and the use of only two chords throughout the song. Lyrical analyses show that 2015 songs are continuing the traditional themes about romantic attraction, love, heartache, good times and partying, home, family, nostalgia, religion, and inspiration, within the context of small-town country life that this genre has used for years.

  • Multimillion-Selling Singer Crystal Gayle Has Performed Songs from a Wide Variety of Genres During Her Award-Studded Career, B
MultiMillion-selling singer Crystal Gayle has performed songs from a wide variety of genres during her award-studded career, but she has never devoted an album to classic country music. Until now. You Don’t Know Me is a collection that finds the acclaimed stylist exploring the songs of such country legends as George Jones, Patsy Cline, Buck Owens and Eddy Arnold. The album might come as a surprise to those who associate Crystal with an uptown sound that made her a star on both country and adult-contemporary pop charts. But she has known this repertoire of hardcore country standards all her life. “This wasn’t a stretch at all,” says Crystal. “These are songs I grew up singing. I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time. “The songs on this album aren’t songs I sing in my concerts until recently. But they are very much a part of my history.” Each of the selections was chosen because it played a role in her musical development. Two of them point to the importance that her family had in bringing her to fame. You Don’t Know Me contains the first recorded trio vocal performance by Crystal with her singing sisters Loretta Lynn and Peggy Sue. It is their version of Dolly Parton’s “Put It Off Until Tomorrow.” “You Never Were Mine” comes from the pen of her older brother, Jay Lee Webb (1937-1996). The two were always close. Jay Lee was the oldest brother still living with the family when their father passed away.

  • MARTY STUART TRAVELS from SATURDAY NIGHT to SUNDAY MORNING by Mario Tarradell
MARTY STUART TRAVELS FROM SATURDAY NIGHT TO SUNDAY MORNING By Mario Tarradell Country music singer, songwriter, guitarist, TV show host and historian continues to mine the rich treasures of American roots music Marty Stuart spent nine years journeying from Saturday night into Sunday morning. That’s no hyperbole. The country singer, songwriter, guitarist, TV show host and noted historian took nearly a decade to craft his expansive and ambitious double-album, Saturday Night/Sunday Morning. The just-released effort not only combines Stuart’s predilection for all things American roots music – country, rock ‘n’ roll, R&B, gospel and bluegrass – but it also tells a story. “I wanted it to flow as a continuation, as an evolution,” says Stuart, 56, by phone from his home in Nashville. “We toured all the while making this record. The more we developed the idea, the more songs started piling up.” As the title suggests, Saturday Night/Sunday Morning captures the dichotomous reality of raising hell and seeking heaven. It’s about night and day, dark and light; the balancing act of feeding the flesh and nourishing the soul. The Saturday Night disc is all about the honky-tonk, while the Sunday Morning CD is all about the church. Stuart calls it “spiritual warfare,” noting that it’s a fine line we all struggle with in our lives. The gospel harmonies on the Sunday Morning side are particularly impressive, recalling the best of the Oak Ridge Boys and the Staple Singers. Stuart and his longtime band, the Fabulous Superlatives, found common ground as people in that musical world of Southern gospel.

  • Once a Day”--Connie Smith (1964) Added to the National Registry: 2020 Essay by Barry Mazor (Guest Post)*
“Once a Day”--Connie Smith (1964) Added to the National Registry: 2020 Essay by Barry Mazor (guest post)* Bill Anderson, Connie Smith and Bob Ferguson in the studio Just months before Connie Smith would step up to the microphone at RCA Records’ Music Row Studio B for her very first recording session, she was a virtually unknown Ohio housewife who’d performed at nearby fairs and on local television. Then, fatefully, at an August 1963 talent contest near Columbus, the contest judge proved to be recording star and country songwriting master Bill Anderson. He would note in his memoir, “None of us could believe such a big voice was coming out of such a petite lady.” He’d told her that if she ever came to Nashville to pursue a country career, he’d be there for her. It took her months to decide to give that a try. RCA’s Nashville label head, Chet Atkins, was impressed by her demo tapes, and when Anderson assured him that he’d have new songs for her that could help get her established, she was signed to the label and in the studio within three weeks. Constance June Meador Smith was 23 as her recording career began that day--July 16, 1964--a young wife and mother. The third song she recorded at that first session, Bill Anderson’s “Once a Day,” in which the singer tells us how the loss of a love to another can be devastating, and as a matter of fact, there’s no denying it has been, would become a country music phenomenon.
