What is the Difference Between Pesticides, Insecticides and Herbicides? Pesticides are chemicals that may be used to kill fungus, bacteria, insects, plant diseases, snails, slugs, or weeds among others. These chemicals can work by ingestion or by touch and death may occur immediately or over a long period of time. Insecticides are a type of pesticide that is used to specifically target and kill insects. Some insecticides include snail bait, ant killer, and wasp killer. Herbicides are used to kill undesirable plants or “weeds”. Some herbicides will kill all the plants they touch, while others are designed to target one species. Pesticide Effects on Food Production As the human population continues to grow, more and more crops are needed to meet this growing demand. This has increased the use of pesticides to increase crop yield per acre. For example, many farmers will plant a field with Soybeans and apply two doses of Roundup throughout the growing year to remove all other plants and prepare the field for next year’s crop. The Roundup is applied twice through the growing season to kill everything except the soybeans, which are modified to be pesticide resistant. After the soybeans are harvested, there is little vegetative cover on the field creating potential erosion issues for the reason that another crop can easily be planted. With this method, hundreds of gallons of chemicals are introduced into the environment every year. All these chemicals affect wildlife, insects, water quality and air quality. One greatly affected “good” insect are bees. Bees play a significant role in the pollination of the foods that we eat. -

TEXAS POLLUTANT DISCHARGE ELIMINATION SYSTEM CHAPTER 5 SEWAGE SLUDGE MANAGEMENT PROGRAM DESCRIPTION A. INTRODUCTION Sewage sludge (including domestic septage) use and disposal is regulated in Texas in accordance with the requirements of Title 30 Texas Administrative Code (TAC) Chapter 312. The rules were promulgated under the Texas Water Code, Chapter 5.103 and the Texas Solid Waste Disposal Act (the Act), Texas Health and Safety Code, §§361.011 and 361.024. Title 30 TAC Chapter 312 contain requirements for the use and disposal of sewage sludge which are equivalent to 40 Code Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 503 standards. The 30 TAC Chapter 312 regulations contain requirements equivalent to 40 CFR Parts 122, 123, 501 and 503. Sewage sludge use and disposal requirements will be incorporated into TPDES municipal and industrial facilities as described in Chapter 3. Sludge only permits (facilities that do not discharge to waters of the U.S.) are required to obtain permits from the TNRCC. Sludge only permits include, but are not limited to, any person who changes the quality of a sewage sludge which is ultimately regulated under 30 TAC Chapter 312 and Part 503 (e.g., sewage sludge blenders, stabilization, heat treatment, and digestion), surface disposal site owners/operators, and sewage sludge incinerator owners/operators and domestic septage processing. B. SLUDGE AND TRANSPORTER REVIEW TEAM The Sludge and Transporter Review Team located in the Wastewater Permits Section of the Water Quality Division is responsible for the administrative and technical processing of sewage sludge/domestic septage beneficial use registrations and sewage sludge only permits for facilities treating domestic sewage (primarily facilities as defined in 40 CFR §122.44). -

PARTRIDGE Department of Genetics, University of Liverpool, Liverpool L69 38X* Received11 .iii.79 SUMMARY Resistance to warfarin and an increased vitamin K requirement appear to be pleiotropic effects of the same allele (Rw 2).Ina natural population containing resistant individuals where the use of warfarin is discouraged the change in the frequency of resistance should reflect the relative fitnesses of the three possible genotypes. A large polymorphic population of rats was extensively poisoned with warfarin and the level of resistance monitored regularly for a period of 18 months after withdrawal of the poison. During this period the proportion of resistant animals in live-capture samples decreased significantly from approxi-. mately 80 per cent to 33 per cent. This decline is consistent with a hypothesis of reduced fitness of both RwZRw2andRw'Rw2 genotypes relative to Rw'Rw' under natural conditions. The relative fitnesses of these genotypes were calculated using an optimisation method based on least squares analysis. These estimates were: Rw2Rw2 (0.46), Rw'Rw2 (077) and Rw1Rw' (100). Homozygous resistant individuals were found in some of the samples, confirm- log that the Rw2 allele does not act as a recessive lethal, although it must be extremely disadvantageous. Some heterogeneity was observed in the proportion of resistant animals in samples taken from different areas of the farm building complex. This could reflect stochastic processes influencing the Rw2 allele frequency in small peripheral populations. 1. Appendix H EPA Hazardous Waste Law This Appendix is intended to give you background information on hazardous waste laws and how they apply to you. For most U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirements that apply to the University, the Safety Department maintains compliance through internal inspections, record keeping and proper disposal. In Wisconsin, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has adopted the EPA regulations, consequently EPA and DNR regulations are nearly identical. EPA regulations focus on industrial waste streams. As a result, many laboratory chemical wastes are not regulated by EPA as hazardous chemical waste. Lead arsenate (PbHAsO4) was first used in apple orchards in the late 1890’s to combat the codling moth, Cydia pomonella (Linnaeus). The affordable and persistent pesticide was applied in ever increasing amounts for the next half century. The persistence in the environment in addition to the heavy applications during the early 1900’s may have led to many of the current and former orchards in this country being contaminated. In this study, soil samples were taken from several apple orchards across the state, ranging from Southwest to Northern Virginia and were analyzed for arsenic and lead. Based on naturally occurring background levels and standards set by other states, two orchards sampled in this study were found to have very high levels of arsenic and lead in the soil, Snead Farm and Mint Spring Recreational Park. Average arsenic levels at Mint Spring Recreational Park and Snead Farm were found to be 65.2 ppm and 107.6 ppm, respectively. -
