Why People Need to Improve Their Basic Job Skills The years ahead are projected to be a time of labor market opportunity and challenge for most workers. Some of these trends include: Many new and existing jobs will require higher levels of technical skills. The amount of education and training required for jobs will increase. Employers will expect their employees to be more productive and obtain better results in more complex jobs. More job and career changes are anticipated for the average worker. All of these changes will require a person who is better prepared than most workers have been in the past. The biggest need, according to most employers and labor market experts, is for workers to have good "basic" skills. These include having basic academic skills, the ability to communicate, to adapt to new situations, and to solve problems. While these and other related skills are not technical skills in the traditional sense, they have everything to do with long-term success on the job. And this is what this book is about. A Different Point of View You will find numerous references in Job Savvy to the studies and research of psychologists, sociologists and other labor market professionals.     An In-Depth Look at Chaplin’s Mutual Comedies By Jeffrey Vance, film historian The Floorwalker (Released: May 15, 1916) Embezzlement is the subject of The Floorwalker, Chaplin’s first film under his landmark contract with Lone Star-Mutual. Chaplin’s inspiration for the film came while he and his brother Sydney were in New York City negotiating his contract with Mutual. While walking up Sixth Avenue at Thirty-third Street, Chaplin saw a man fall down an escalator serving the adjacent elevated train station and at once realized the comic possibilities of a moving staircase. He asked his technical director, Ed Brewer, to design and construct an escalator in a department store set designed by art director and master of properties George “Scotty” Cleethorpe (who had worked for Chaplin at Essanay). “With a bare notion I would order sets, and during the building of them the art director would come to me for details, and I would bluff and give them particulars about where I wanted doors and archways.” Chaplin wrote in his autobiography, “In this desperate way I started many a comedy.” (18) After seeing The Floorwalker, Mack Sennett commented, “Why the hell didn’t we ever think of a running staircase?” (19) The Floorwalker has none of the pathos, romance, or irony of the best Chaplin Mutuals. The crudeness and cruelty of his earlier films is still evident in The Floorwalker, although the film contains a stronger plot than most of his previous films, and the moving-staircase chase was novel for 1916. A glimpse of Chaplin’s evolution to a more graceful type of screen comedy is evident in Charlie’s dance when he discovers the valise of stolen money and dives into the bag.

    Making a Living Ellen Cheshire Slide 1 I’m not sure what it says about me, that of all the aspects of Charlie’s life and work, I decided to focus on money and business. Working with Paul Duncan on the forthcoming Chaplin Archives book, I was allocated three chapters covering his early years of childhood poverty in Victorian England his successes on the British stage his rapid rise in popularity and fame when he made the transition to cinema. Working for a year with Mack Sennett at Keystone Studios, before moving to Essanay. My final chapter also covered his signing with Mutual. Each move was closely linked to both money and an increase in personal and artistic freedom. The press coverage of the Mutual signing and the contract contents was covered throughout the world. And firmly established the link between Charlie and money. When speaking to friends about this project, his phenomenal salary was one of the most popular facts they knew. Although much of the factual information presented here may be familiar to you, the accompanying original documents and press coverage from the Chaplin archives reveal insights into Charlie’s business acumen and the fascination both the press and public had about his income. When I make reference to “adjusted for inflation that would now be worth” I used the on-line inflation calculator http://www.usinflationcalculator.com/ The happenchance that Charlie’s first film appearance at Keystone was in a film entitled Making a Living seems too good to be true!     Charlie Chaplin The Essanay Comedies 2-disc set on Blu-ray and DVD In 1914, the great Charlie Chaplin signed a one-year contract with the Essanay Film Manufacturing Company for what was then an unprecedented salary. Shooting in its California and Chicago studios, he went on to make 16 films that established him as the world’s favourite screen comedian. On 23 January 2017 the BFI will release The Essanay Comedies, a collection of all 16 films, in 2-disc Blu-ray and DVD sets. Each set also contains exclusive special features never before released in the UK, including a 1951 version of A Burlesque on Carmen voiced by comedian Peter Sellers. Unlike other stars of the time, Charlie Chaplin retained creative control over his films, from writing to casting and directing. Despite the strain that put on his relationship with Essanay, this fruitful period of his career saw him evolve his style, resulting in seminal works such as The Tramp, The Bank and The Champion. These comprehensive collections are the result of a 12-year project led by Lobster Films and Cineteca di Bologna to fully restore the films, which are: His New Job, A Night Out, The Champion, In the Park, A Jitney Elopement, The Tramp, By the Sea, His Regeneration, Work, A Woman, The Bank, Shanghaied, A Night in the Show, A Burlesque on Carmen, Police and Triple Trouble The Essanay Comedies will be launched at the Cinema Museum, 2 Dugard Way (off Renfrew Road), London SE11 on Friday 20 January 2017 at 6.30pm. A selection of films from the collection will be screened, followed by a Q&A with the BFI’s Douglas Weir, who produced this release, and the writer, broadcaster and Chaplin specialist Glenn Mitchell.

    THE CHAPLIN CRAZE: CHARLIE CHAPLIN AND THE EMERGENCE OF MASS-AMUSEMENT CULTURE JACK RUNDELL PhD UNIVERSITY OF YORK ENGLISH AND RELATED LITERATURE AUGUST 2014 Abstract This thesis explores the relationship between Charlie Chaplin’s early career and films (1914-1916) and the emergent mass-amusement culture of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in America. It combines empirical research into mass- amusement history with close readings of Chaplin’s early films in order to illuminate the close and previously minimally explored relationship between Chaplin’s film- making and popularity on the one hand, and the broader early twentieth-century history of mass-amusement culture on the other. The thesis approaches its subject through the specific phenomenon of amusement ‘crazes’. It takes three selectively illustrative examples – roller skating, popular dance forms and moving pictures – through which to explore the specific debates and controversies these amusements generated and the social and cultural aspirations and concerns that drove them. This cultural-historical research is used to re-read Chaplin films, enabling topical allusions and cultural subtexts to come newly into focus. It also provides the context for a fresh interpretation of Chaplin’s sensational rise to fame in the mid-1910s as a cultural phenomenon symptomatic of a wider landscape of contemporary frenetic and popular crazes. The thesis challenges two principal assumptions that underlie prevailing critical approaches to Chaplin’s early career, unquestioningly grounded, as they are, in the privileged status conventionally ascribed to his later, and better-known feature films. These assumptions are: (1) that Chaplin’s early films are chiefly of interest for the ways in which they teleologically anticipate later developments in his film- making; and (2) that Chaplin’s distinctive qualities and cultural value are always to be understood in qualitative contrast to the dominant imperatives of contemporary slapstick and the larger mass-amusement culture to which slapstick belonged.

    Charlie Chaplin Biography Born: April 16, 1889 London, England Died: December 25, 1977 Vevey, Switzerland English actor, director, and writer The film actor, director, and writer Charlie Chaplin was one of the most original creators in the history of movies. His performances as "the tramp"—a sympathetic comic character with ill-fitting clothes and a mustache—won admiration from audiences across the world. Rough childhood Charles Spencer Chaplin was born in a poor district of London, England, on April 16, 1889. His mother, Hannah Hill Chaplin, a talented singer, actress, and piano player, spent most of her life in and out of mental hospitals; his father, Charles Spencer Chaplin Sr. was a fairly successful singer until he began drinking. After his parents separated, Charlie and his half-brother, Sidney, spent most of their childhood in orphanages, where they often went hungry and were beaten if they misbehaved. Barely able to read and write, Chaplin left school to tour with a group of comic entertainers. Later he starred in a comedy act. By the age of nineteen he had become one of the most popular music-hall performers in England. Arrives in the United States In 1910 Chaplin went to the United States to tour in A Night in an English Music Hall. He was chosen by filmmaker Mack Sennett (1884–1960) to appear in the silent Keystone comedy series. In these early movies ( Making a Living, Tillie's Punctured Romance ), Chaplin changed his style. He stopped overacting and became more delicate and precise in his movements. He created the role of "the tramp." Appearing in over thirty short films, Chaplin realized that the speed and craziness of Sennett's productions was holding back his personal talents.
