Easter Day the resurrection of our lord jesus christ sunday, april 16, 2017 Happy Easter and Welcome to Washington National Cathedral Welcome! We are so glad you are here on this special day when we shout for all to hear the central proclamation of the Christian faith: Alleluia! Christ is risen! The Lord is risen indeed! Alleluia! Easter is the day when we declare that Jesus was not just a good man, a great prophet, a wonderful teacher or a gifted healer who lived more than 2,000 years ago. No, Easter is when we proclaim that he is our savior who died and rose from the grave, never to taste death again. Today is the day when we proclaim that death could not hold Jesus. Rather, God loved him and all of us so much that even after we nailed him to the cross, God raised Jesus from the dead and we are promised that God will do the same for us. As an old friend of mine once said, “Will we accept a Good Friday world? A world where the best there is gets overpowered and killed and sealed in a tomb by greed and hate and jealousy? Or will we embrace God’s offer of an Easter love? A love that says death of any sort will never have the final word because love will always win out.” We are delighted that you are here today and we hope that you too will discover an Easter love. For you are precious in God’s sight, you are loved more than you will ever know, and God will never let you go. Christ is risen! The world has changed forever, and that is good news worth sharing. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went toward the tomb. The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead.
