It might go without saying, but that's exactly the problem with Earth This was the first time we'd really seen the Crime Syndicate since Crisis. I think I would have liked this more with better art I also feel the story here could have been a little denser. Our heroes rebuild. Thankfully, this was Morrison at his best. It amounts to a tale that is not as easily followed as it could be. The artwork was good but didn't stand out as being fantastic. Experience the DC Comics Universe like never before with. It is however, a shame that I read Forever Evil before I read this. Whatever a particular society or people deem to be moral or good will always win in the end. Good is the reflection of good. As with most other Morrison-penned stories that I read back in the day, the strength of the story is the creativity in the little details. Something similar happens once the League head to Earth 2 without all its members feeling the need to go and a couple stay behind to protect the Earth if things go awry as they are wont to do. However, the JLA realized it couldn't win on the antimatter Earth because in that reality evil always triumphed. Each is an evil counterpart of a JLA member. I am also not quite sure how, or for that matter if this book is part of the DC continuity. The Crime Syndicate's personal fulfillment for open control cannot be fulfilled on the Justice League's Earth as exemplified by Owlman's vendetta against his father Thomas Wayne, who is dead on Justice League Earth. I haven't kept up with comics for over ten years, but I used to be avid about them. I assumed with all of the hullabaloo surrounding this one, that it was probably lengthy and intense. The story is pretty standard super hero fare, although Morrison turns the dial up a few notches. NO matter how much you try to do "right" the right in this universe isn't what works. The first word that the mind conjures is elegance. By doing good for the sake of good, people are transformed into even better people. I am not a fan of Quitely, as he follows the habit of so many before him of every guy looks the same, just dark hared or no hair, one shorter than the other etc etc etc. Evil wins over good on this antimatter Earth and people's hearts are on the other side of their bodies. WORLDS WILL LIVE, WORLDS WILL DIE: MYTH, METATEXT, CONTINUITY AND CATACLYSM IN DC COMICS’ CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS Adam C. Murdough A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2006 Committee: Angela Nelson, Advisor Marilyn Motz Jeremy Wallach ii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Advisor In 1985-86, DC Comics launched an extensive campaign to revamp and revise its most important superhero characters for a new era. In many cases, this involved streamlining, retouching, or completely overhauling the characters’ fictional back-stories, while similarly renovating the shared fictional context in which their adventures take place, “the DC Universe.” To accomplish this act of revisionist history, DC resorted to a text-based performative gesture, Crisis on Infinite Earths. This thesis analyzes the impact of this singular text and the phenomena it inspired on the comic-book industry and the DC Comics fan community. The first chapter explains the nature and importance of the convention of “continuity” (i.e., intertextual diegetic storytelling, unfolding progressively over time) in superhero comics, identifying superhero fans’ attachment to continuity as a source of reading pleasure and cultural expressivity as the key factor informing the creation of the Crisis on Infinite Earths text. The second chapter consists of an eschatological reading of the text itself, in which it is argued that Crisis on Infinite Earths combines self-reflexive metafiction with the ideologically inflected symbolic language of apocalypse myth to provide DC Comics fans with a textual "rite of transition," to win their acceptance for DC’s mid-1980s project of self- rehistoricization and renewal.

Earth-11 Jumpchain Yes, this is just for waifus This is a world of superhumans and aliens, one that may seem very familiar at first. However, this isn’t the normal world of DC Comics. No, this is one of its parallel dimensions, one where everybody is an opposite-gender reflection of their mainline counterparts. It’s largely the same besides that one difference, so the events that happened in the primary universe are likely to have happened here as well. The battle between good and evil continues on as it always does, on Earth, in space, and in other dimensions. Superwoman, Batwoman, Wonder Man, and the rest of the Justice League fight to protect the Earth from both from it’s own internal crime and corruption and from extraterrestrial threats. The Guardians of the Universe head the Green Lantern Corps to police the 3800 sectors of outer space, of which Kylie Rayner is one of the premier members. On New Genesis and Apokolips in the Fourth World, Highmother and Darkseid, the Black Queen vie for power, never quite breaking from their ancient stalemate. The title itself suggests many of the topics about which women were concerned, or at least were supposed to concern them: the mediation of identity through heterosexual partnership, the pressure to marry and the simultaneous emphasis placed on individual achievement. Concerns about marriage and Lois’ ability to enter into it routinely provide the sole narrative dynamic for stories and Superman engages in different methods of avoiding the matrimonial schemes devised by Lois or her main romantic rival, Lana Lang.

The figure of the “metahuman,” the human with superpowers and purpose, embodies the transfigured nerd whose defects—intellect, swarm-behavior, abnormality, flux, and love of machines—become virtues of survival in the twenty-first century. The conflict among capitalism, fascism, and communism, which drove the Cold War and its immediate aftermath, also drove the Golden and Silver Ages of Comics. In the era of planetary emergency, these forces reconfigure themselves as different versions of world-destruction. The metahuman also signifies going “beyond” these economic and political systems into orders that preserve democracy without destroying the biosphere. Therefore, the styles of metahuman figuration represent an appeal to tradition and a technique of transformation. I call these strategies the iconic style and metamorphic style. The iconic style, more typical of DC Comics, makes the hero an icon of virtue, and metahuman powers manifest as visible signs: the “S” of Superman, the tiara and golden lasso of Wonder Woman.

Amid a limited media landscape that otherwise consisted of radio, film, newspaper, and magazines, comics served as a useful tool in engaging readers of all ages to get behind the war effort. The aims of this research was to examine a sampling of messages put forth by comic book publishers before and after American involvement in World War II in the form of fictional comic book stories. In this research, it is found that comic book storytelling/messaging reflected a theme of American isolation prior to U.S. involvement in the war, but changed its tone to become a strong proponent for American involvement post-the bombing of Pearl Harbor. This came in numerous forms, from vilification of America’s enemies in the stories of super heroics, the use of scrap, rubber, paper, or bond drives back on the homefront to provide resources on the frontlines, to a general sense of patriotism.

A major critique of the genre is that it simply represents an adolescent male power fantasy; and presents a world view that valorises masculinist individualism.
