1 A LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIRMAN AND PRESIDENT & CEO

United Way of Central Oklahoma had a remarkable year of uniting individuals and the community in 2015, in keeping with the past nine decades of the organization’s legacy. We are very pleased with the many positive developments we’ve been part of in the community which have strengthened health and human services in central Oklahoma. Not only are more people being connected to needed services than ever before, but the giving nature of central Oklahomans has continued to shine.

It was a year of dynamic leadership with Judy Love and Mike Turpen at the helm of the campaign. The pair was unstoppable, bringing in more than $21.6 million, much of which was pledged by new donors. Mike and Judy made sure the campaign was successful until the very end. We finished the campaign having exceeded our goal and it was the sheer tenacity of these leaders that made it possible.

In 2015, United Way of Central Oklahoma added NewView Oklahoma to its family of Partner Agencies. NewView is an agency that sets its sights on improving lives and empowering those with dramatic vision impairments.

United Way’s research will make a substantial impact in central Oklahoma thanks to a generous gift from Boeing to improve and underwrite research on health and social services in central Oklahoma. Our research team’s most recent edition of Vital Signs, “Central Oklahoma Priorities: Mental Health and Substance Abuse” focuses on the most recent findings about the state of mental health and substance abuse in the area.

Additionally, the UWCO Board of Directors approved to allocate $1.2 million over three years to provide Pathways case management as well as wrap-around services to sustain permanent, supportive housing and meet the other needs of those affected by homelessness, mental illness and substance abuse in central Oklahoma.

The second class of Board Serve Central Oklahoma graduated and these ambitious civic leaders are now serving on various partner agency boards. It is programs like Board Serve and affinity groups like Emerging Leaders and Women’s Leadership Society that are helping keep philanthropy and civic leadership alive and well in central Oklahoma.

We want to acknowledge three individuals who have gone beyond the call of

2 duty to serve United Way of Central Oklahoma with their valuable experience, insights and volunteerism. In 2015, Robert “Bob” Ross was presented with the John Rex Community Builder Award at the 13th Annual Snowflake Gala Volunteer Reception. The same evening, Hillary Farrell received the Ray Ackerman Leadership Award. The highest United Way of Central Oklahoma honor, the Richard H. Clements Lifetime Achievement Award, was bestowed upon Pete Delaney.

We sincerely thank these individuals for their devoted service to United Way, our Board of Directors, our partner agencies and the United Way mission.

We also thank you, our volunteers, donors, board members and service providers for your tireless work and extreme generosity in bringing help to our community’s most vulnerable citizens. Together, we can make central Oklahoma even stronger, healthier and more compassionate.

Cathy14 O’Connor, Human Resource Committee Chair 28 VOLUNTEER CENTER

The United Way of Central Oklahoma Volunteer Center throughout 2015 connected more than 2,000 volunteers with opprotunities to serve in the community. These volunteers spent more than 5,000 hours giving back to our community. If you were to put a dollar figure Volunteer in the community! to that, it would total well over $118,500.

VOLUNTEER CENTER PROJECTS In June, we partnered with companies for Day of Action to collect school supplies to donate to the Putman City, Millwood, and Crooked Oak school districts and to the Juvenile Justice Center. We received a $5,000 sponsorship from Depend that was used to help purchase school supplies. In October we hosted Day of Caring, a community-wide volunteer event when more then 700 individuals were connected with 48 volunteer opprotunities. These volunteers came from companies, churches, universities and other organizations to serve United Way Partner Agencies.

During the holidays, we support our Partner Agencies by connecting volunteers to give back to those they serve. This is all coordinated through the Volunteer Center website to encourage people to give back during the holiday season.

GETTING CONNECTED This year we launched a new volunteer platform, “Get Connected,” which allows partner agencies and other local nonprofits to easily share volunteer opportunities and recruit volunteers. We have also developed a more accurate way of tracking volunteers and their hours that will allow us to keep better track of all the great deeds our volunteers are doing throughout the community.

The 2014/2015 class marks the second year for the program. Forty-eight students have graduated from this program and been placed on the boards of 29 Partner Agencies. In May, Frank Merrick, Board 2016, the third class will graduate 27 students Serve Program Chair who will be placed on nonprofit boards.

United Way is grounded in its core practice of transparency and accountability. We are responsible to our donors and Partner Agencies to effectively manage and allocate donations and that is a duty we take very seriously. United Way of Central Oklahoma continually exceeds the United Way Worldwide Standards of Excellence. We are committed to maintaining low administrative and fundraising costs and holding our Partner Agencies to the same standards.

Each year, we ensure those standards are being met by requiring our Partner Agencies to renew their association with United Way. Through this Community Investment process, which is administered by United Way of Central Oklahoma board and community volunteers, Partner Agencies are closely scrutinized to make sure that contributions are allocated to nonprofits upholding only the highest standards of excellence.

The following explains how our Community Investment process takes place and in the next pages, you’ll see exactly where your donations are allocated.

1 United Way of Central Oklahoma raises funds. Approximately 200 Community Investment Volunteers, all of whom are donors, spend more than 4,000 combined hours reviewing agency budgets, 2 audits and other financial reports, program outcomes and performance histories. Current research about Central Oklahoma health and human service needs is provided to inform the volunteers. 3 Community Investment Volunteers visit Partner Agencies to see first-hand the work being accomplished with United Way funds. Community Investment Volunteers meet to discuss funding recommendations 4 for each United Way program. The Community Investment Committee operates within the United Way of Central Oklahoma’s Board of Directors to review and balance funding 5 recommendations from the donor volunteers against the contributed funds available for allocation. When the funding balance is complete, the Community Investment 6 Committee submits a final recommendation to the United Way of Central Oklahoma’s Board of Directors for approval. 7 Following approval from the Board of Directors, the funds are distributed among our Partner Agencies. Community Investment Volunteers conduct follow-up evaluations through 8 mid-year and final reports on results achieved. 19 Our Five Focus Areas Community Preparedness Our community is prepared to respond to individual and community emergencies.

Healthy Citizens Central Oklahomans have access to physical and mental health care and adopt healthy lifestyles. Important health research is funded.

Independent Living Older adults and the disabled are engaged in the community with access to independent living, job skills, volunteer posi- tions, and dynamic relationships while their primary caregivers receive respite and support.

Strong Families Individuals and families have resources to achieve financial stability as well as access to counseling, debt management, education, job training and housing.

Successful Kids Infants, children, and youth are nurtured and given the opportunity to succeed in school, develop life skills and become productive citizens. PROGRAM FUNDING

People in need often need more than one service. United Way of Central Oklahoma funds a myriad of vital health and human services in the area and can also refer clients to multiple agencies, depending on their situations.

By donating to United Way of Central Oklahoma, you are helping support dozens of highly credible agencies that provide services to some of Oklahoma’s most vulnerable citizens. Your gifts provide health care to the sick, safe-havens for those in harm’s way, a lifeline to the desperate and a hand-up to people who are struggling.

Here is how your donations were allocated in 2015 to make a big difference in the lives of thousands of your friends, neighbors and fellow central Oklahomans.

United Way of Central Oklahoma activated its United Way of Central Oklahoma May Tornadoes Relief Fund to facilitate donations to serve the immediate, intermediate and long-term needs of those impacted by the storms in May, 2013. United Way also administered the Governor’s Oklahoma Strong Relief Fund, to be used for long-term needs
