  • Transnational Habitus: Mariem Hassan As the Transcultural Representation of the Relationship Between Saharaui Music and Nubenegra Records
Transnational Habitus: Mariem Hassan as the transcultural representation of the relationship between Saharaui music and Nubenegra records Luis Gimenez Amoros Submitted in partial fullfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, Rhodes University PhD (thesis) Department of Music and Musicology Supervisor: Dr Lee Watkins I Abstract This thesis expands on primary field research conducted for my MMus degree. Undertaken in the Saharaui refugee camps of southern Algeria (2004-2005) that research - based on ethnographic data and the analysis of Saharaui music, known as Haul 1- focussed on the musical system, the social context of musical performance and the music culture in Saharaui refugee camps. This doctoral research examines Saharaui Haul music as practised in Spain and is particularly focussed on its entry, since 1998, into the global market by way of the World Music label, Nubenegra records. The encounter between Saharaui musicians and Nubenegra records has created a new type of Saharaui Haul which is different to that played in the refugee camps. This phenomenon has emerged as a result of western music producers compelling Saharaui musicians to introduce musical changes so that both parties may be considered as musical agents occupying different positions on a continuum of tradition and change. Nubenegra undertook the commodification of Saharaui music and disseminated it from the camps to the rest of the world. A musical and social analysis of the relationship between Nubenegra and Saharaui musicians living in Spain will form the basis of the research in this thesis. In particular, Mariem Hassan is an example of a musician who had her music disseminated through the relationship with Nubenegra and she is promoted as the music ambassador of the Western Sahara.

Proposing a third term that operates beyond the dichotomy of high culture and mass culture and yet offers a fresh approach to both, these essays address a multitude of different topics that can all be classified as unpopular culture. From David Foster Wallace and Ernest Hemingway to Zane Grey, from Christian rock and country to clack cetal, from Steven Seagal to Genesis (Breyer) P-Orridge, from K-pop to The Real Housewives, from natural disasters to 9/11, from thesis hatements to professional sports, these essays find the unpopular across media and genres, and they analyze the politics and the aesthetics of an unpopular culture (and the unpopular in culture) that has not been duly recognized as such by the theories and methods of cultural studies. • Alfredo Rodriguez & Pedrito Martinez Duologue
Alfredo Rodriguez & Pedrito Martinez Duologue Painted in the broadest of strokes, the stories of Alfredo Rodriguez and Pedrito Martinez may seem similar: both started life in Havana, discovered their gifts and passions for music and headed to the States, where they melded the music of their homeland with a wide variety of influences, each in his own deeply personal way. Zoom in a little, though, and the two paths differ considerably. Rodriguez was born into a musical family, his father a popular singer and TV host. A child prodigy, he studied classical piano at the prestigious Conservatorio Amadeo Roldán and Instituto Superior de Arte while playing popular music in his father’s orchestra by night. While performing at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2006 he was discovered by his future mentor and producer, the legendary Quincy Jones. Martinez, on the other hand, honed his craft on the streets of Havana, learning the deeply-rooted percussion and vocal style of Afro- Cuban folkloric and religious music. Nearly a decade Rodriguez’s senior, the master percussionist and vocalist arrived in the U.S. in 1998, was soon awarded First Place at the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz International Afro-Latin Hand Drum Competition, and appeared in the documentary film, Calle 54. He then co-founded a Latin fusion group, Yerba Buena, with which he toured extensively and recorded several successful albums. Pedrito has performed or recorded with Wynton Marsalis, Sting, Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Angelique Kidjo, Chucho Valdés, and James Taylor. He has been leader of his own quartet since 2005 with a GRAMMY® Award-nominated album released in 2013 on Motéma Music.

  • Logic New Album Download
Logic new album download Continue Sean Farner For many music lovers, album art is as much a part of the experience as music. When you play a song on an iPhone that doesn't have album art attached, it detracts from the feeling that you're listening to one part of the larger collection. That's why Apple has included a feature in iTunes to automatically download album artwork for songs that are missing from these images. Using this feature and sync your iPhone, you'll be able to replace the album art and get the full album listening experience on your device. Open the iTunes software and click on the Music button on the left sidebar. Click on the Advanced menu option at the top of the iTunes app and then click on the Get Album artwork button. This feature scans through your iTunes library and automatically downloads and inserts album art into songs that don't yet have it. When the process is complete, move on. Plug in the 30-pin iPhone USB cable connector at the bottom of your iPhone, and connect the other end to the available USB port on your computer. Click Sync Now if your iPhone is not automatically in sync. Once the song is synchronized, your iPhone must now have matching album cover images. Album art is useful for identifying albums when viewing a digital music library. When you sync music files, an album work usually appears on a portable device. The cover is usually embedded in music files - but not always. If you don't have album art for all the albums in your music collection, you can download works of art from free websites, but if you need to update a lot of music in your library, this method can be tedious.

  • " African Blues": the Sound and History of a Transatlantic Discourse
“African Blues”: The Sound and History of a Transatlantic Discourse A thesis submitted to The Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Music in the Division of Composition, Musicology, and Theory of the College-Conservatory of Music by Saul Meyerson-Knox BA, Guilford College, 2007 Committee Chair: Stefan Fiol, PhD Abstract This thesis explores the musical style known as “African Blues” in terms of its historical and social implications. Contemporary West African music sold as “African Blues” has become commercially successful in the West in part because of popular notions of the connection between American blues and African music. Significant scholarship has attempted to cite the “home of the blues” in Africa and prove the retention of African music traits in the blues; however much of this is based on problematic assumptions and preconceived notions of “the blues.” Since the earliest studies, “the blues” has been grounded in discourse of racial difference, authenticity, and origin-seeking, which have characterized the blues narrative and the conceptualization of the music. This study shows how the bi-directional movement of music has been used by scholars, record companies, and performing artist for different reasons without full consideration of its historical implications. i Copyright © 2013 by Saul Meyerson-Knox All rights reserved. ii Acknowledgements I would like to express my utmost gratitude to my advisor, Dr. Stefan Fiol for his support, inspiration, and enthusiasm. Dr. Fiol introduced me to the field of ethnomusicology, and his courses and performance labs have changed the way I think about music.

  • DESERT BLUES Chor. Paul Boizot, 2015. Music; Nak Amadjar
DESERT BLUES Chor. Paul Boizot, 2015. Music; Nak Amadjar Nidounia by Tamikrest (a Tuareg band from Mali), from album Toumastin, available from Amazon mp3* or ITunes. Desert Blues is the name given to a genre of music, initially from the band Tinariwen, which mixes traditional Malian Tuareg material with electric guitars and bass guitars. Some of the lyrics reflect the experience of this community, which has involved war and dislocation. The lyrics to this song are an (extreme!) example, so I have appropriated the term “Desert Blues” for the title of the dance. Dance themes could be: journey, passage, the good and the bad, concern for suffering of the people. Or, as usual, ignore all that and just enjoy the steps with the music! Rhythm 4/4. Steps are slow-quick-quick-slow-slow. Slow = 2 beats and quick = 1 beat. Formation; open circle or circle. Arms V. Start – after approximately 10 bars, on the strong beat after the first two syllables of the singing. 1. sR, Lxf q, replace R q, sL, sR, Lxb,sR q, close L q, sR, sway L. 2. I'm just a passenger of life, which as it come, will also take its leave. My soul and heart know it, and I also believe that I was not created to be eternal.
