Botanical Research in India in the Domain of Seedling Morphology in Relation to Taxonomy
ARTICLE BOTANICAL RESEARCH IN INDIA IN THE DOMAIN OF SEEDLING MORPHOLOGY IN RELATION TO TAXONOMY N. D. PARIA* In recent years there has been enormous advancement in different branches of plant science in India since inception of the subject in Vedic period. Various botanical disciplines have reached to the synthesis of diverse new knowledge through the current investigations by the researchers. However, regarding the botanical researches, one very important area of research i.e. study of seedling morphology has not drawn attention of Indian botanists to that extent as in other branches. The present author and his associates have been working in the domain of seedling morphology of Indian flora for more than two decades. In this article, a summarized account of their extensive work has been presented revealing the importance of this unexplored discipline at national level. Introduction marked by the contributions on plant taxonomy, the oldest of botanical disciplines, developed in India during the Vedic ndia has had a long botanical history dating back to period. Later the Portuguese and Dutch, being attracted by ancient times. The first half of the twentieth century the vast potentialities of the country’s flora and vegetation, witnessed considerable botanical activities. Accepted: 26 March, 2014 ABSTRACT The evaluation of the post-germination phases of plants allows the recognition of transitional structures that support the relationships among taxa and their establishment. Together with fruit and seeds, seedlings and saplings provide useful characters for identifying many species. This study aimed to describe and characterize the morphology of the fruits, seeds, seedlings and saplings of Macrolobium acaciifolium, M. bifolium and M. pendulum, as well as to evaluate the ecological, taxonomic and phylogenetic value of the structures identified. In this work, the seeds were sown in plastic trays with sterilized sand and sawdust, without pre-germination treatment. The fruits of the three species are woody legumes, dehiscent fruit or indehiscent fruit. The seeds have seed coats with or without venation and variable embryos, with plumules differing among the three species; this trait can be helpful in distinguishing among the species studied. The seedlings are of the cryptocotylar-hypogeal-reserve or phanerocotylar-epigeal-reserve type. Macrolobium bifolium and M. pendulum are similar species, differing in only a few characters. These characters have taxonomic value and aid species identification. The characteristics of M. pendulum are described here for the first time. Padulosi2 1ICIPE, PO Box 30772, Nairobi, Kenya 2Bioversity International,Via dei Tre Denari, Maccarese (Rome), Italy *Corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract Since the mid-nineties, thanks to DNA sequence studies, phylogeny of Phaseoleae, Phaseolinae, and genus Vigna has been greatly improved. Genus Vigna is now reduced to a monophyletic group including five reorganized subgenera: American subgenus Lasiospron, a subgenus Vigna reduced to yellow and blue-flowered species which includes Bambara groundnut, subgenus Haydonia, Asian subgenus Ceratotropis, and a subgenus Plectrotropis enlarged to all pink-flowered species. At the infraspecific level, although a precise phylogeny is not yet established, the different wild and domesticated cowpea groups are now well known. The nine subspecies can be split between a “mensensis” forest group (remote secondary gene pool) and a “dekindtiana” savanna group (close secondary gene pool) which includes subsp. unguiculata. Subsp. unguiculata represents the primary gene pool and includes the domesticated cowpea, var. unguiculata, and its wild progenitor, var. spontanea (previously known as subsp. dekindtiana sensu Verdcourt non Harms). However, if cowpea domestication occurred before 1500 BC in Harlan’s African non-center, a precise center of domestication is yet to be identified. Introduction Over the last 30 years, cowpea and Vigna taxonomy has been reviewed by several workers, including Baudoin and Maréchal (1985), Ng and Maréchal 1985, Pasquet 1996a, Pasquet 1996b, and Padulosi and Ng (1997) with substantial improvement. It is however particularly from the mid-nineties onward, that novel molecular technologies applied to taxonomy, such as DNA finger printing, have provided major advancement on the front of the phylogeny of Phaseoleae, Phaseolinae, and genus Vigna. -
