  • Tout Est Art ? * * Is Everything Art ? Ben at the Musée Maillol
Everything is art, 1961, 33.5 x 162 cm, The Musée Maillol reopens with an exhibition by Ben acrylic on wood, Ben’s personal collection. TOUT EST ART ? * * IS EVERYTHING ART ? BEN AT THE MUSÉE MAILLOL Ben takes possession of the newly reopened Musée Maillol for the first large-scale exhibition devoted to the artist in Paris. Bringing together over 200 artworks principally from the artist’s own personal collection, as well as private collections, this retrospective, which features several previously unseen installations, provides the public with an insight into the multiple and complex facets of this iconoclastic, provocative and prolific artist, an advocate of the non-conformist and the alternative for over 50 years. This exhibition devoted to Ben is part of a new programme of exhibitions put in place by Culturespaces at the Musée Maillol which will reopen its doors in September after 18 months of renovation work. In the late 1950s, Benjamin Vautier (b. 1935) more widely known as Ben, declared: ‘I sign everything’. This statement, corroborated by his images and actions, illustrates his belief that the world and indeed art, is a whole, and that everything constitutes art. Each phrase, however brief, reveals a meditation on important issues such as truth in art, the role of the artist in society and the relationship between art and life itself. His ‘écritures’ or written texts reflect his own personal questions and bear testimony to a critical spirit that is quick to question everyone and everything, including himself. Inspired by Marcel Duchamp’s ready-mades, Ben has systematically perpetuated the notion that a work of art is recognizable not by its material content, but by its signature alone.

In literature, a fairy-tale was often a story inhabited by supernatural beings. If this supernaturalness is in nature and stays within its realms, then magic is the perfect word for Sète. A place that polarizes liberties, free spirits and anarchists, in the etymological sense of the word.» Michel Onfray (philosopher), «Féeries Sétoises», 2016 «When I arrived in Los Angeles, I didn’t know a soul. In New York, people told me ‘you’re crazy going over there when you don’t have a single friend and don’t drive. If you want to go the West Coast, go to San Francisco.’ My reply was ‘no, no, Los Angeles is the place for me.’» David Hockney, «David Hockney by David Hockney», 1976 THE CONCEPT Sète has never ceased to attract and produce artists. It’s a city of artists. A pool of talent, a hotbed. Few towns can boast such a compelling identity to which artists have such a deep-rooted attachment. Some pass through, some have chosen to live there, others were born there. The first artists who come to mind are musician Georges Brassens, film director Agnès Varda and theater director Jean Vilar. Three exceptional artists, three libertarians and anti-conformists who loved a city now and forever associated with their talent.

Combas & Co. or the Figure and the Great Divide Abstract The young painter, Robert Combas, leader of the 1980s "figuration libre" 'free figuration' movement, is seen here both as representative of stylistic and thematic trends in contemporary French art, and as illustrative, through the unfolding of his career, of the object "painting" and its sociology in contemporary France. Examined are: first, the "Postmodern convergence" of figurative, indeed narrative art, with the collapse of the "great divide" between elite and popular art forms; and second, traits such as hypertrophic verbal paratext, high erotic content, and political stand.

Provoked by the Halle Saint Pierre museum, this 4th exhibition – the fruit of the association between the HEY! curation and this historical French space for singular art and art brut - is on a mission: to offer visibility to art carrying an aesthetic overshadowed by dominant academics, and ignored by the radars of conventional criticism. “Three exhibitions, in 2011, 2013, and 2015, don’t seem to have been enough to expose the breadth of genres and families that make up this other artistic scene. Thus, we bring the same passion to this new exhibition, hoping to do justice both geographically and historically. With the thirty or so artists gathered here, we will be able to experience the emancipating reach of their works as they hold open the door to our imaginary spaces, irreducible in all of us,” says Martine Lusardy, director of the Halle Saint Pierre.

  • Robert Combas Au Palais Du Tau » Du 20 Février Au 22 Mars 2015
