Parnasso in Festa: a Feast for Ears and Eyes the 2018 Handel Festival Halle
12 Opera con Brio, LLC May 2018 Opera con Brio Richard B. Beams Parnasso in Festa: a Feast for Ears and Eyes The 2018 Handel Festival Halle As it was four years ago in 2014, a hit of the sponsali di Teti e Peleo (“Parnassos in Celebration for the Handel-Festival Halle this year was Handel’s delightful Nuptials of Thetis and Peleus.”) The celebration was an serenata Il Parnasso in Festa. But the two performances allegory for the royal wedding of Princess Anne and could hardly have differed more. The first was a William IV of Orange, the occasion for which Handel scintillating concert performance by the acclaimed Cetra wrote the piece. The mythological figures of Thetis and Orchestra in its annual visit with Director Andrea Marcon Peleus are not personified in the serenata although a good and prominent international soloists, who brought out all part of the appeal of this production was the two baroque the virtuosic richness of this neglected work. The second dancers who eventually assumed their personas. was a fully staged, historically informed production at the intimate Goethe-Theatre Bad Lauchstadt from the equally renowned Lautten Compagney Berlin, in their annual visit. A spirited group of young soloists certainly reinforced the musical splendor of the work, yet the historically informed baroque performance, directed and choreographed by Belgian Baroque specialist Sigrid T’Hooft, made the evening a feast for ears and eyes alike. Handel’s enchanting work of 1733, much of it borrowed from the oratorio Athalia of 1732, is so Italianate that one would never know its source. -

CVNC: An Online Arts Journal in North Carolina http://cvnc.org/articleprint.cfm?articleid=5140 (http://cvnc.org) EARLY MUSIC REVIEW Philippe Jaroussky & Apollo's Fire Light up the Sky for Duke Performances By John W. Lambert (author.cfm?authorId=20) October 26, 2011 - Durham, NC: Even as the historically-informed performance movement has matured, countertenors remain vocal oddities. They're basically our non-surgical answers to the castrati, the last of whom seems to have been Alessandro Moreschi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alessandro_Moreschi), whose few recordings give pale hints of the grandeur of an artistic era that is gone forever. (Hear his recording of the Bach-Gounod "Ave Maria" here (http://www.archive.org/details /AlessandroMoreschi).) Starting with Alfred Deller, countertenors have gradually displaced the use of altos (or outright transpositions) in music composed for (altered) male sopranos or mezzo-sopranos. Among the great ones since Deller (who sang a recital at St. Mary's in the '50s) have been James Bowman, René Jacobs, and David Daniels (who was born in Spartanburg). To that short list one must now add Philippe Jaroussky (http://www.philippejaroussky.fr/), the brilliant young French artist who made his area debut in a concert presented by Duke Performances (http://dukeperformances.duke.edu/) in Reynolds Industries Theater. Jaroussky is the real thing, the genuine article, a singer whose vocal qualities include the finest (/media/photologue/photos/DukePer- attributes of his best predecessors and virtually none of their shortcomings. Here’s a voice that is even, flexible, warm, 102611.jpg) Simon Fowler of ample size, and with never a hint of falsetto in the traditional sense. -
