Alvar Aalto Researchers’ Network Seminar – Why Aalto? 9-10 June 2017, Jyväskylä, Finland Alvar Aalto’s associative geometries Holger Hoffmann Prof. Dipl.-Ing., Architekt BDA Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design Why Aalto?, 3rd Alvar Aalto Researchers Network Seminar, Jyväskylä 2017 Prof. Holger Hoffmann, Bergische Universität Wuppertal, April 30th, 2017 Paper Proposal ALVAR AALTO‘S ASSOCIATIVE GEOMETRIES This paper, written from a practitioner’s point of view, aims at describing Alvar Aalto’s use of associative geometries as an inspiration for contemporary computational design techniques and his potential influence on a place-specific version of today’s digital modernism. In architecture the introduction of digital design and communication techniques during the 1990s has established a global discourse on complexity and the relation between the universal and the specific. And however the great potential of computer technology lies in the differentiation and specification of architectural solutions, ‘place’ and especially ‘place-form’ has not been of greatest interest since. Therefore I will try to build a narrative that describes the possibilities of Aalto’s “elastic standardization” as a method of well-structured differentiation in relation to historical and contemporary methods of constructing complexity. I will then use a brief geometrical analysis of Aalto’s “Neue Vahr”-building to hint at a potential relation of his work to the concept of ‘difference and repetition’ that is one of the cornerstones of contemporary ‘parametric design’. With the help of two projects (one academic, one professional) I will furthermore try to show the capability of such an approach to open the merely generic formal vocabulary of so-called “parametricism” to contextual or regional necessities in a ‘beyond-digital’ way. -

1 The TRUMPET of BOOKER LITTLE Solographer: Jan Evensmo Last update: Feb. 11, 2020 2 Born: Memphis, April 2, 1938 Died: NYC. Oct. 5, 1961 Introduction: You may not believe this, but the vintage Oslo Jazz Circle, firmly founded on the swinging thirties, was very interested in the modern trends represented by Eric Dolphy and through him, was introduced to the magnificent trumpet playing by the young Booker Little. Even those sceptical in the beginning gave in and agreed that here was something very special. History: Born into a musical family and played clarinet for a few months before taking up the trumpet at the age of 12; he took part in jam sessions with Phineas Newborn while still in his teens. Graduated from Manassas High School. While attending the Chicago Conservatory (1956-58) he played with Johnny Griffin and Walter Perkins’s group MJT+3; he then played with Max Roach (June 1958 to February 1959), worked as a freelancer in New York with, among others, Mal Waldron, and from February 1960 worked again with Roach. With Eric Dolphy he took part in the recording of John Coltrane’s album “Africa Brass” (1961) and led a quintet at the Five Spot in New York in July 1961. Booker Little’s playing was characterized by an open, gentle tone, a breathy attack on individual notes, a nd a subtle vibrato. His soli had the brisk tempi, wide range, and clean lines of hard bop, but he also enlarged his musical vocabulary by making sophisticated use of dissonance, which, especially in his collaborations with Dolphy, brought his playing close to free jazz. -

Little's untimely death, and still yet extensive recording career,1 presents yet another example of early passing among innovative and influential trumpeters. Like Clifford Brown before him, Theodore “Fats” Navarro before him, Little's death left a gap the in jazz world as both a sophisticated technician and an inspiring composer. However, unlike his predecessors Little is hardly – if ever – mentioned in jazz texts and classrooms. His influence is all but non-existent except to those who have researched his work. More than likely he is the victim of too early a death: Brown passed away at twenty-five and Navarro, twenty-six. Bob Cranshaw, who is present on Little's first recording,2 remarks, “Nobody got a chance to really experience [him]...very few remember him because nobody got a chance to really hear him or see him.”3 Given this, and his later work with more avant-garde and dissonant harmonic/melodic structure as a writing partner with Eric Dolphy, it is no wonder that his remembered career has followed more the path of James P. -

RECENT PUBLICATIONS John Wilhelm Rowntree 1868-1905 and the beginnings of modern Quakerism. By Stephen Allott. Sessions Book Trust, York, 1994. Pp. xiv + 138. £7.00. Stephen Allott's concise and appealing account of John Wilhelm Rowntree makes very considerable use of quotations. It is well-illustrated. Rowntree was one of the most influential Friends of his day and made a great contribution to the Society despite his involvement in business, his chronic ill-health and his sadly early death at the age of 36. Allott provides a valuable addition to the studies of British Quakerism in the crucial period around the beginning of this century. It is timely background to the consideration of the impact of the Manchester conference of 1895. Rowntree will now be known to Friends not so much as a pioneer in writing Quaker history as for being part of it. He had hoped to make a major new historical study and gathered a collection of Quaker literature in preparation for this, later to pass to the Woodbrooke Library. His lectures on the rise of Quakerism in Yorkshire in his Essays and Addresses form his main published historical contribution. They went beyond narrative to exhortation and explained his vision for the Society of Friends. History for him was not a matter of satisfying academic curiosity but of tracing the evolution of contemporary Quakerism and explaining the relevance of the past to the questions of the day. The Rowntree series of Quaker histories built on his vision, effectively as his memorial. His deep friendship with Rufus Jones led to Jones's major contribution to the series alongside W.C. -
Heavenly Priesthood in the Apocalypse of Abraham
HEAVENLY PRIESTHOOD IN THE APOCALYPSE OF ABRAHAM The Apocalypse of Abraham is a vital source for understanding both Jewish apocalypticism and mysticism. Written anonymously soon after the destruction of the Second Jerusalem Temple, the text envisions heaven as the true place of worship and depicts Abraham as an initiate of the celestial priesthood. Andrei A. Orlov focuses on the central rite of the Abraham story – the scapegoat ritual that receives a striking eschatological reinterpretation in the text. He demonstrates that the development of the sacerdotal traditions in the Apocalypse of Abraham, along with a cluster of Jewish mystical motifs, represents an important transition from Jewish apocalypticism to the symbols of early Jewish mysticism. In this way, Orlov offers unique insight into the complex world of the Jewish sacerdotal debates in the early centuries of the Common Era. The book will be of interest to scholars of early Judaism and Christianity, Old Testament studies, and Jewish mysticism and magic. ANDREI A. ORLOV is Professor of Judaism and Christianity in Antiquity at Marquette University. Yet, «axonometric» is a misnomer if uniformly applied to describe Choisy’s pictorial parallel projections. The nomenclature of parallel projection is often ambiguous and confusing. Yet, the actual history of parallel projection reveals a drawing system delineated by oblique and axonometric projections which relate to inherent spatial differences. By clarifying the intrinsic demarcations between these two forms of parallel pro- jection, one can discern that Choisy not only used the two spatial classes of pictor- ial parallel projection, the oblique and the orthographic axonometric, but in fact manipulated their inherent differences to communicate his theory of architecture. Parallel projection is a form of pictorial representation in which the projectors are parallel. Unlike perspective projection, in which the projectors meet at a fixed point in space, parallel projectors are said to meet at infinity. Oblique and axonometric projections are differentiated by the directions of their parallel pro- jectors. Oblique projection is delineated by projectors oblique to the plane of pro- jection, whereas the orthographic axonometric projection is defined by projectors perpendicular to the plane of projection. Axonometric projection is differentiated relative to its angles of rotation to the picture plane. When all three axes are ro- tated so that each is equally inclined to the plane of projection, the axonometric projection is isometric; all three axes are foreshortened and scaled equally.
