Cameron Cartiere and the chART collective For All Is For Yourself Public Art Facilitator Cameron Cartiere's and the chART collective: For All Is For Yourself explore increasing sustainable habitats for bees that counter recent decreasing bee numbers largely due to disease, parasites, pesticide use and loss of habitat . Cartiere's social practice includes her working with various Richmond communities to produce handmade seed paper (from recycled office paper) that is then laser cut into 10,000 "bees" that form the Gallery installation. In early December the public will be invited to return to the Gallery to take some of the bees away to plant in their own gardens – to create new bee friendly habitats while facilitating the nest to "swarm" out of the gallery. The remaining bees will re-appear in another exhibition at Kelowna Art Gallery in 2016. jasna gu - not by chance alone jasna guy is a visual artist who works primarily with drawing, often incorporating photography, text, and collage as intrinsic parts of image-making process. Alarmed by collapsing bee colonies and the subsequent impact on a broad variety of ecosystems, jasna guy's recent body of work, not by chance alone, explores the subjects of bee ecology and history. Tens of thousands of individually printed images are created by the artist using numerous small hand cut blocks made for printing. The installation of several hundred printed silk tissue sheets form a "bee carpet" representing 30,000 individual bees swirling amongst patterned flora and mythical personages that reference the symbiotic relationship of bees to flowers. Each sheet dipped in beeswax, creates a rich olfactory experience enhancing the visual profusion of images in guy's immersive installation. The exhibition was curated by Nan Capogna.

10 EXHIBITION: ANGELA GROSSMANN | DREW SHAFFER JIGGERY POKERY To November 14th, 2015

Winsor Gallery is pleased to announce the first duo solo exhibition of mixed media artists Angela Grossmann and Drew Shaffer. Grossmann and Shaffer’s exhibition entitled Jiggery Pokery runs from October 15th – November 14th. An opening will be held on the evening of Thursday October 15th, from 6-8pm; both artists will be in attendance.

While Drew Shaffer is an emerging artist and Angela Grossmann has been established for more than 30 years, the two have much in common. Both Grossmann and Shaffer share a special connection to working with found objects and ephemera. Together, their duo solo pushes and pulls between references to old and new, hot and cold, love lost and love found. Drew, similar to Grossmann, utilizes found, mundane and forgotten objects and transforms them into powerful pieces of art. These neglected objects have little or no meaning until Shaffer molds them into unique sculptures with haunting narratives. Drew focuses on emotional and psychological needs and desires of contemporary culture. Grossmann’s new works address the role performance plays in the assumption and persistence of gender identity in a postmodern world. The emotional and vulnerable nature of Grossmann’s portraits ‘play’ with erotica, using the assumption of the voyeuristic gaze and socially acceptable expectation of female behavior as a starting point. Grossmann’s dramatic and deliberate display of the highly sexualized parts of a woman’s body through the raising of skirts, removal of blouses, or in some cases, the addition of bits of real doll’s clothing implies a studied reflection on normative gender identity in relation to the sexed body. Furthermore, the portraits move beyond a simplistic reiteration of submission and exploitation where beauty is definitive of value. Grossmann’s emphasis on traditional concepts of femininity through costume and apparel actually produces a critique of such judgements.

About Angela Grossmann Angela Grossmann is a Vancouver-based visual artist. Over the last three decades her paintings and collages have been the subject of more than 20 solo shows in Canada, the U.S, Europe and Japan beginning with the Young Romantics Exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery (1985). The Art Newspaper (June 2006) included Grossmann on a list of 100 artists who have most influenced students at art schools in Britain (culled from 11 leading British art schools). Recently her work has been featured in three Vancouver Art Gallery exhibitions including Unreal that showcased her miniature surrealist paintings.

About Drew Shaffer Drew Shaffer is a multi-media artist based in Vancouver. He has previously shown across Canada in galleries including Monte Clark, Surrey Art Gallery, Belkin Satellite Gallery and Winsor Gallery. Drew Shaffer’s statement: It's about desire: what we want, why we want it, what happens to us when we get it, and what happens to it once we've had it. – Drew Shaffer

Brigitta Kocsis is a Hungarian-born Canadian visual artist. She attended Concordia University Fine Arts in Montreal and received her BFA from Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in 2005. She has shown extensively in Europe, and in the past year has mounted two solo exhibitions in Alberta, as well as solo exhibitions in Hungary and Finland with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts. 14 EXHIBITION: URBAN RAMBLES

to November 21st 2015

Urban Rambles is a two-person exhibition that will be held at The Deer Lake Gallery featuring the work of Luciana Alvarez and Joy Hanser. Urban Rambles is hosted and organized by The Burnaby Arts Council. The exhibition will open Saturday October 24th 2015 and run until November 21st 2015. The work of Luciana Alvarez and Joy Hanser evidences a love for the materials and process of paintings as well as a love of ‘looking’.

Urban Rambles features paintings that explore the perceptual experience of urban environments. Urban environments across the globe as a result of rapid technological innovation, hyper development, climate change and globalization are changing quickly and the subject of the city is caught in that alienating transition. This reality is the essential backdrop for understanding this work. The title suggests that the artists enjoy rambling around the city, taking in the sights and then recreating the scene through memory and a photograph. What if this work wasn’t simply a personal interpretation of the city but rather an attempt to understand an experience of the city? Art is not simply personal expression and style but rather an attempt to reconcile, the socially irreconcilable aspects of life.

Regardless of the differences in Luciana Alvarez and Joy Hanser work stylistically all of this work is a monument to the spatial abstraction of urban environments. Urban Rambles attempts to capture, and rectify the dizzy disorientation of contemporary urban embodiment.

Luciana Alvarez’s colourful warm city streets are the opposite of Joy Hanser’s dark alienated pictures. Alvarez’s cities take on a dream like wave. The details that might differentiate one city from another are erased and instead Alvarez presents us one interchangeable mass. Alvarez chooses to paint moving wobbly cities, without a ‘traditional’ three-point perspective. The paintings lack a fixed orientation point, which is not dissimilar to the contemporary experience of the city and the world. Is this decision purely stylistic or can we consider it in relation to the previously mentioned larger social contexts? Is the act of cities in the style of Parisian street painters a desire to understand and fix her self in a globalized world that increasingly has no fixed point, to fix herself in the wave? Joy Hanser’s work restricts itself to a cool, dark palette except in the portrait of the young girl against the moving background of a sky train. Hanser’s out-side world is always mediated by a plane of glass. These images paint the familiar scene of looking out a bus window on a humid fall day, looking into a camera lens, or out a car window. Even the paintings hide glass, because they were painted from photographic images. All windows can be understood as a lens of the camera, and all paintings are a window into the world. What kind of world does Hanser reflect back to us the viewer?

19 EXHIBITION: CLOUD DREAMS – JUNE YUN to Nov 13, 2015

Water’s variety of forms and reflections seem real and unreal, like a dream or mirage – this ephemeral quality attracts [my] interest. Sometimes it is like memory that seems clear, but is also misty. Clouds are another form of water – in the middle of mountains, white, floating clouds like delicate, silky sheen scarves wrapping or surrounding everything through time and space. – June Yun We are pleased to present Vancouver-based Chinese Canadian artist, June Yun in her second solo exhibition at Art Beatus (Vancouver) Consultancy Ltd. “Cloud Dreams” is an exhibition featuring a series of new oil on canvas paintings that are a continuation as well as an extension of the artist’s long- running Water series.

During the autumn of 2013, Yun and a few of her former classmates from the University of Anhui – along with their professor – reunited and returned to Huizhou, China, to paint the same landscape as they did 20 years ago when they were students in the BA Hons program. Upon returning to Vancouver, Yun produced a series of paintings featured in this exhibition that became mnemonic of both her university experience as well as her return trip to Huizhou.

Just as water has been an important subject matter in her oeuvre, the cloud motif is imbued with much personal meaning. To Yun, clouds are a metaphoric representation of ideas, emotions and sensory experience that create an ephemeral atmosphere akin to the fluid and mercurial quality of a memory or a dream. The resulting work in “Cloud Dreams” is serene, nostalgic, evocative and introspective.

Currently working and residing in Vancouver, Canada, June Yun was born in China and attended Anhui Normal University and Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing majoring in painting before completing a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in the United Kingdom in 2000. Since then, she has taught in universities and art institutions in China and Canada and has exhibited her work internationally in China, Europe and North America.

Art Beatus (Vancouver) is open Mon-Fri, 10am-6pm and is closed on weekends and holidays Underground and street parking is available. Free admission. Please use this information in any of your press release and/or announcement material. Visual material is available upon request.

ABOUT THE SHOW John has been in a stable relationship with his boyfriend for a number of years. But when he takes a break, he accidentally falls in love with a woman. Torn between the two, filled with guilt and conflicting emotions, he doesn’t know which way to turn. His boyfriend is willing to wait for him to make a decision, but so is his girlfriend. And both are prepared to fight to keep him. As the pressure mounts, a dinner with both parties is arranged, and everyone wants to know: Who is John? What is he? And what will his decision be? Winner of the 2010 Lawrence Olivier Award, Cock brilliantly questions the dual nature of sexuality, the complexities of love, and the desperate search for self-identity in the modern world. CALLS FOR SUBMISSIONS NATIONAL

35 COMPETITION: WINTER STATIONS DESIGN -TORONTO Brief As we learned this past year, during the winter of 2015, even record-cold temperatures cannot turn back Torontonians from the Beach. For 2016 we return with an expanded second annual WinterStations exhibition to celebrate Toronto's winter waterfront landscape.

This year we are expecting to include up to thirteen lifeguard stands across Balmy, Kew and Ashbridges Bay beaches located in the heart of the Beach community, south of Queen Street East, between Woodbine and Victoria Park Avenues. These utilitarian structures are to be used as the armature for temporary installations which will need to be able to withstand the rigours of Toronto winter weather. The exhibition is to run February 15, 2015 until March 20, 2015.

This is a single-stage open international competition, welcoming artists, designers, architects and landscape architects to submit proposals for WinterStations' temporary artwork installations. Theme This year's theme is Freeze / Thaw. Toronto winters are long and unpredictable. They consist of varying temperatures, amounts of precipitation, wind, in short: dispositions. There are days the snow falls heavy. Other days are deceptively bright and sunny, but with bristling winds and plummeting cold. The snow accumulates, along with the ice, and sometimes it is blown away, dispersed in drifts. But at some point during the long winter months we wait for the temperatures to rise and the sun to melt it all away. Whether it will do so for good is always an unknown.

The theme of Freeze / Thaw asks designers and artists to respond to the changing climactic conditions and transitions of the Toronto winter. Designs may anticipate the coming spring or refuse to yield, reminding us December is only a few months behind and will return again. They may highlight a static moment or phase in our winter. Perhaps, most significantly, designs have the opportunity to observe, reflect or contrast the immediate waterfront landscape with its banks of snow and frozen ice. To this end, they should expect to be playful and provocative, creatively utilizing materials and site to inform concepts that echo the freeze / thaw narrative and engage the public.

There is no limit to the size of the installation, but please note that included in the jurors instructions will be durability and constructability.

Winning teams will be provided with an allowance for travel and accommodation to spend time in Toronto during the installation and the activities surrounding the opening, February 12 - 15, 2016. In 2015, this included an opening party at the Balmy Beach Club and a speaking engagement at Toronto’s Design Exchange. These events provide opportunities for citizens of Toronto to engage directly with the designers. Members of the design team should expect to meet with media to discuss their designs and ideas.

Ryerson University Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science, The University of Toronto Daniels Faculty of Architecture Landscape and Design and Ontario College of Art and Design University (OCADU) will head up teams of students to create installations for three stands.

Up to ten proposals from this Call will be selected to design installations for the remaining lifeguard stands.

The Lifeguard Stands The lifeguard stands are essentially identical. They are sturdy steel pipe structures to which the installation is to be fastened. The method of fastening is up to each competitor, however it may not result in any damage to the structure. As this is the off-season for use, there are few restrictions on covering the stations; the three exceptions are: the shepherds’ hook, the lifesaving ring and any emergency signage.

Please assume minimal security during the event and the possibility of vandalism or simply wear and tear from the curious. There will be no power or utilities available. Proposals should indicate how materials may be disposed of or recycled at the end of the display period. Please designate on your entry if your design is specific to one particular station. Selection and Approval Process Once the Jury has met and determined a short list of entrants, a technical review of the finalists will be conducted in order to ensure the constructability of the projects. Those on the shortlist will be assigned a construction team lead by a project manager, chosen by the organizers to produce the appropriate working drawings in order to ensure that the construction is feasible and within budget. This collaboration will take place from December 2015 through to installation. The final winners will be announced January 8, 2016.

All construction will be carried out in Toronto by firms selected by the organizers and overseen by the entrant, the project manager and the construction team. The entrants chosen to participate in this competition agree to work to the schedule established by the organizers.

Competition Rules, Regulations and Submission Requirements A design honorarium of $3,500.00 CAD will be paid to selected proposals. Deadline for submissions is November 13, 2015.

The OSA is a leading centre for visual arts education and creative expression in the Ottawa region. In 1879 by a group of prominent local citizens under the patronage of the Governor General, the Marquis of Lorne and his wife, the Princess Louise founded the Ottawa Art Association. The Association was determined to open as a school of art and design in the capital. Classes began in April of 1880 with 18 students enrolled in the Ottawa Art School, as it was then called. Over the next 100 years there were many changes and transitions to the school and its community, but the school survived and emerged from the war years as the Ottawa Municipal Art Centre. In 1976 the school was reorganized under its present name and in 1983 it moved into its present location in the By Ward Market district in Ottawa. In 2009 the school expanded with a second campus being added in the Shenkman Arts Centre in Orleans. In the 2010-11 school year there were 3,613 registrations in over a dozen different disciplines at both campuses.

53 PANEL CALL:, THE WINNIPEG EFFECT: SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO? THE CCCA 20TH ANNIVERSARY SYMPOSIUM

Call for Panel Contributors The Centre for Contemporary Canadian Art (CCCA) was founded in 1995 by Bill Kirby with the objective of broadening public awareness of contemporary Canadian art through an evolving online database (http://ccca.concordia.ca). Documenting the careers of many of Canada’s leading professional contemporary artists, designers, art writers and curators, as well as some important art institutions and organizations, the CCCA Canadian Art Database is a vital resource for the study of contemporary Canadian art.

Today, the CCCA Canadian Art Database is permanently housed at Concordia University, under the auspices of the Gail and Stephen A. Jarislowsky Institute for Studies in Canadian Art, which is a Research Centre within the Faculty of Fine Arts.

Call for Panel Discussion Proposals In October 2016, the CCCA will mark its 20th anniversary by hosting a symposium in Winnipeg, a city that has been both mythologized and maligned as a place of artistic activity. Celebrated for fostering a fiercely independent but communally engaged art community, Winnipeg has also been criticized for its insularity, commercial limitations, and frigid winters. The symposium The Winnipeg Effect: Should I Stay or Should I Go? aims to stimulate a multi-generational discussion within the artistic community, among those who live, landed in, and/or left this city.

The organizers are seeking artists, curators, academics and other cultural workers to deliver short (5-10 minute) individual presentations as part of one of the following 3 panels: • A panel composed of artists from Winnipeg who either live in or left the city behind. Each panelist will reflect on their time growing up and working as an artist in Winnipeg, and on their reasons for either remaining in or eventually leaving the city. How has your overall experience of the city shaped your career? Do or did conditions in Winnipeg provide artists with a unique perspective nationally, internationally? What specific features and challenges do or did artists in Winnipeg face?

• A panel composed of artists who have lived and worked in Winnipeg but are not from the city. Each panelist will reflect on their time working as an artist in Winnipeg, and their reasons for coming to this city. How has your overall experience of Winnipeg shaped your career? Do conditions in this city provide artists with a unique perspective nationally, internationally? What specific features and challenges do or did artists working and living in Winnipeg face compared to those in other cities?

• A panel composed of curators, critics and/or academics. Each panelist will reflect on and assess the impact Winnipeg-themed exhibitions have had on this city’s artistic self-identity, with an eye to broader national and international contexts. Exhibitions to be considered may include (among others) The Winnipeg Shows, The Winnipeg Perspectives, The Gothic Unconscious, Subconscious City, My Winnipeg, and Winnipeg Now.

Applicants are encouraged to reflect on their professional careers in relation to Winnipeg from social, political, personal, art historical, and policy related perspectives.

While all panelists are encouraged to include visual material with their presentation in the form of a digital slide show, please note that the presentation is not intended to be an artist talk.

Travel funding will be provided.

Please send an expression of interest outlining your contribution to the conversation (250 words), along with a brief biography (100 words) and CV (3 pages), to: [email protected]

Deadline for expressions of interest: 1 January, 2016 Notification of acceptance: April, 2016 Conference dates: October, 2016

55 PROPOSALS: CALL FOR PROPOSALS: #TRENDING: MOBILIZING ART AND CULTURE OCADU Contemporary Art, Design, and New Media Art Histories Graduate Conference 2016

Presented by the MA Program in Contemporary Art, Design and New Media Art Histories at OCAD University, Toronto, Canada Conference Dates: Saturday, March 12, 2016

The influence of trends is undeniable in contemporary culture, but rarely are its implications fully fleshed out. How can a trend mobilize or call others to action? As scholarship in contemporary art, design and new media becomes increasingly focused on networked lives, the digital platforms through which we communicate, interact, and share information demand academic and social inquiry. This interdisciplinary conference looks to the topic of #trending in its myriad meanings as it produces and affects subjects and citizenship, social and political change, visual and material culture. We must consider the longevity, impact, and relevancy of cultural work and research as the implications of cultural trends, their makers, and media are nuanced and complex. Are trends disposable or lasting? How should scholarship respond to trends -- by defining them or following them? What can trends tell us in their sequencing, forecasting, and analysis?

Topics for discussion include, but are not limited to: alternate, sharing and DIY economies inclusive and locative mobilizations of populations, movements, and narratives trending as a form of political mediation artists as activists as artists viral visual culture & digital storytelling speculation in the art market the gentrification of social and artistic spaces grants and arts awards as trend indicators curating as trend-setting the affect and aesthetics of trends trends, history and the acceleration of culture, theory, criticism authorship, art practice and online multiplicity transmedia: podcasts, web series, etc. the platforms of trend-making: Instagram, twitter, Tumblr, etc. celebrities as artists/artists as celebrities

We welcome submissions of academic papers, proposed workshops and panels, curatorial proposals, and artistic works, performances, and interventions from MA and PhD students and independent scholars.

56 PROPOSALS: ICE FOLLIES 2016 REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL Deadline: December 11th, 2015.

Ice Follies 2016 is the sixth biennial festival of site-specific artwork on frozen Lake Nipissing, rooted in artist-run culture and community arts engagement.

This 400km square lake offers an expansive backdrop of ice and sky, for mounting large-scale installations and performances. Video installations, sound- generating structures, lights sculptures, ice letters, community-based theatre productions and even working carousels have been erected in previous Ice Follies exhibits.

Ice Follies appears to the visitor as an assemblage of works mounted in a wide semi-circle (or arc) out across the ice adjacent to the main dock and riverfront park on Lake Nipissing. This eccentric collection of artworks echoes the "communities" of ice fishing huts that form elsewhere on the lake.

Ice Follies invites arts groups to submit proposals for installation and performance work for the 2016 festival.

Call for submissions: Ojichaagobiishin: It reflects in water Saturday February 13th – Saturday February 27th 2016

The theme for Ice Follies 2016, Ojichaagobiishin (i.e. “it reflects in water”) is a call to action for artists to reflect on water, and look at what we see.

Looking in water reflects back our own image, forcing us to look at ourselves. Refracted in the current moment are the imminent threats of land development and pipelines, as well as community-based efforts to protect the source of life. Without fresh water sources such as Lake Nipissing nothing can survive. In order for the world we live in to become healthier and more vital, we have to change ourselves.

Call for submissions Ice Follies invites proposals from organizations interested in curating one or more installations or performances to be mounted on Lake Nipissing.

(1) Organization eligibility a Must be a registered organization, charity or ad-hoc collective. b Must have proof of liability insurance that covers off-site incidents c Must commit to paying full artist fees, as outlined by CARFAC (see: http://www.carfac.ca/tools/fees/), for any projects proposed for Ice Follies 2016; d Must be willing to provide support for the artist if needed for installation, maintenance, and/or removal.

(2) Project eligibility a Relevance: Clearly engages with the Ice Follies 2016 theme, Ojichaagobiishin: It reflects in water b Artistic merit c Project viability - Due to the precarious nature of working on a frozen body of water, each project will be assessed by a standing committee on the basis of the following viability guidelines: • Project must adhere to a “leave no trace” principle. • Materials used will either be biodegradable ____ [contact Stewardship council for details on this] or planned accordingly for safe installation and removal without disruption to the health of the lake and land. • Artists agree to • consult with a committee appointed advisor familiar with the nature of Lake Nipissing in winter to develop specific installation and removal plans. • Follow through on those plans.

57 PROPOSALS: PERFORMANCE ARTISTS | PEDAGOGY, EMBODIMENT, AFFECT Deadline: by Friday, November 20th, 2016 at 6pm

Open invitation for individuals and groups who identify as “emerging” or “professional” performance artists whose work engages with topics of alternate pedagogy, embodiment, affect, and “secret knowledge” to submit a proposal for Performing Pedagogies - a series of critical performances and panel discussion (March 9th-12th 2016). As an extension of the program, this event welcomes submissions from other artistic mediums (film and media, visual art, dance, experimental extracurricular activities, workshops, etc.) that grapple with the above listed themes.

This event will be the culmination of my Master’s Thesis at Queen’s University in the Cultural Studies program where I have been investigating the dissemination of embodied pedagogies, somatic epistemologies, and relational performance art. The event seeks to bring together performance works that reconsider possibilities of embodied knowledge gathering and transmission.

Performances will take place in Kingston, ON either in one of two gallery/artist run spaces (exact locations to be confirmed), unless performance is site specific. Selected artists will receive a small honorarium for their participation. As an application, please attach a response to the following questions and provide necessary information as a PDF or Word Document as your application: Name: Address: Email: Website: (if applicable) Phone Number:

Please address: Describe your proposed performance. Please list any technical requirements and length of performance (if applicable). Please include 2-3 samples of your previous work (samples may include JPEGs or links to Vimeo, Youtube, etc.).

Please keep the written component of your application to a maximum of three of pages, and format the it into a single PDF or word document.

Art, creativity, sustainability, innovation, technology, artist residencies, workshops, labs, collaborative process and critics / Immersion

Presentation: Summer camp is an international meeting of artists and non-artists who question the future of the contemporary world. How can art today enlighten us on the new world order?

One possible path is to live collaborative experiences. We are more creative reflecting collectively than staying alone in our corner, centered on ourselves and claiming paternity for a creation. How can we think together today, for the improvement of our world?

This utopia can gain strength, influence through localized micro-actions and “positive contaminations.”

During 3 months, the art center Pensamento tropical opens its doors for an experimental and artistic incubation. Proposals of residencies, workshops, labs, and other creative projects dealing with art, sustainability, innovation, technology, collaborative processes, social critique, immersion, can be sent. We are guided by these questions: Does transversality offer us a broader view of our world? Do collaborative process give us a broader view of our world? How does experience nourish us? Do results matter so much? "The sensory details of this place will overwhelm you & ´swamp your boat´ in a good way."- Y. Fred.

Green Olive Arts is an international art studio and urban art residency in Tetouan, Morocco, specializing in connecting the creatives of the world with the culture, beauty and creatives of Morocco.

Our mission is to resource creative individuals of both emerging and established artistic talent from around the world in seasons of inspiration, production, collaboration and cultural exchange here in Morocco.

We invite artists from a wide range of disciplines and mediums to apply for residencies of 2-12 weeks during most months of the year. We accept visual artists, writers, filmmakers, poets, curators, scientists, choreographers, puppeteers, and more. Our local Selection Panel awards residencies based upon artistic excellence of current work and intended residency proposal. Artists are encouraged, but not required, to engage the local community as part of their residency through workshops, mural projects, performances, readings, round tables, and other collaborations to bridge cultures and nurture creativity.

Green Olive Arts provides a space for artists to travel away from normal settings to do research and produce new works in a context offering an abundance of fresh inspiration and engagement with local creatives. GOA offers fully equipped production spaces, and opportunities for interaction and collaboration with other artists.

In addition to providing production space for groups and individuals, GOA offers resident artists a wide array of concierge services including arranging housing, custom designed and artisan focused tours, gallery connections, and personal connections with Moroccan artists.

Green Olive Arts was started by artists for artists as the culmination of the vision of American artists Jeff McRobbie and Rachel Pearsey. Having spent several years each creating art in Morocco, a shared dream began to emerge of how they could create a collaborative art space, where foreign and local artists could experience the richness of creating art alongside each other in a multicultural environment.

Location: Tetouan: Morocco Tetouan, Morocco is a jewel of a city, clearly off the well worn paths of Moroccan tourism and commerce. Situated in the North of Morocco, on the North-Western tip of Africa, Tetouan sits by the Mediterranean Sea in a beautiful valley at the intersection of two rugged mountain ranges. Tetouan's ancient walled city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a rich history and culture hidden within stuccoed walls. Here you will find Morocco’s prestigious National Institute of Fine Art, the starting point of many Moroccan artists, the National School of Architecture, the Royal Artisan School for children and Morocco's new Museum of Modern Art. Tetouan's architecture and second language reveal its place in history as the capital of the Spanish protectorate, a heritage that remains visible at every turn. With its annual International Festival of the Lute, countless fine arts festivals and associations, Tetouan has art “in its blood” on a grassroots level that is rarely seen in this part of the world. Green Olive Arts is located in the heart of this city, a few blocks from the king's palace, numerous transportation arteries, museums, galleries and the gates of the medina itself in the 10-room home of a prominent Tetouani family. Three large sunny studio spaces, a wood shop, supplies area, kitchen, laundry and 32 meter square exhibition space and an array of easels and other furniture accommodate artists' needs.

"I felt very inspired in Morocco. I loved walking through the old city of Tetouan... drinking in the atmosphere of the places and the smells. The sensory impressions were so unique, I couldn't get enough of that. Tetouan is such a 'real' city... unlike some other cities that seem to be more tourism focused. The sensory details of this place will overwhelm you and 'swamp your boat', in a good way. [Green Olive Arts] worked hard to make connections for me, to point me in directions, and introduce me to people. The arrangements were wonderful, and the opportunity to travel that they arranged for us really enriched our time there. Green Olive Arts offers something special."

CONTEXT Saint George's Day is celebrated by various Christian churches and by several nations, kingdoms, countries and cities of which Saint George is the patron saint. However, in Catalonia this celebration has a special meaning. La Diada de Sant Jordi is also known as "el dia de la Rosa" (The Day of the Rose) or "el dia del Llibre" (The Day of the Book) is an important Catalan celebration held on 23rd April. The main event is the exchange of gifts between sweethearts, loved ones and colleagues.

Roses have been associated with this day since the Middle Ages, but the giving of books is a more recent tradition originating in 1923, when a bookseller decided to promote the holiday as a way of commemorating the almost simultaneous deaths of Miguel Cervantes and William Shakespeare on 23 April 1616.

On this day, many book stores and cafes host readings by authors (including 24- hour marathon readings of different classics of the Catalan and Spanish literature).

PROJECT During April 2016 Jiwar contributes to the celebration with a program devoted to writers that includes the following proposed components: - A public reading. Writers are invited to read samples of their work with a local audience. - Dinner with major Barcelona writers and publishers. - A visit to the main Catalan Institutions. - Writing jam session in Jiwar open to the public.

Smack Mellon reviews submissions from Emerging Artists wishing to have their work considered. The work will be reviewed and considered for the Emerging Artists Summer Show by Smack Mellon staff and the show's curator Erin Donnelly, Smack Mellon's Programs Manager. The theme for this year is the 2016 election. The summer of 2016 when the exhibition will be held will be marked by the Democratic National Convention July 25-28 in Philadelphia and the Republican National Convention July 18-21 in Cleveland where the two dominant political parties in our country will announce their bids for the presidency in the race up to the election on November 8.

The event of the 2016 electoral process is a jumping off point for the exhibition to critically examine current national politics from personal, social, and cultural perspectives. 106 RESIDENCY: SFAI WATER RIGHTS THEMATIC RESIDENCY: CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

Residency starts 01/09/2016 Residency ends 01/07/2017 More information http://sfai.org/waterrights/

SFAI Water Rights: If you are fighting for greater equity in water resources, apply to this program!

The Santa Fe Art Institute (SFAI) is pleased to announce Water Rights as its next residency and programmatic theme. Because water is seen, now more than ever, as a contested resource, SFAI is committed to bringing together local, national, and global thinkers and creators to collectively expand and revise our knowledge of what we think we know about water rights. New Mexico is rich in its relationship to water- a position created over a long history of corporate, environmental, political, and multicultural claims to this essential resource.

From September 2016 through June of 2017, SFAI and its community partners will explore several questions: How do we describe and define the contested space around water? If water use is often parallel to culture, how can cultural activities result in greater models of equity to our water systems? How can diverse practices, from poetic to practical to political, create greater access to these and other parallel resources?

Apply here: SFAI looks forward to bringing together dynamic creative thinkers, artists, designers, educators, policy makers, poets, architects, journalists, and activists to focus on ways that we can address inherent inequalities relating to water rights and create new ways of thinking about the use and misuse of this essential substance.

Please join SFAI as we focus on this impactful issue that transcends social, cultural, and economic boundaries.

Deadline Dec. 18, 2015:

For more information about applying for a residency, or about how your organization can engage with this programming as a community partner, visit SFAI.ORG or email Nina Elder, Residency Program Manager, at [email protected]

Location: The First State National Historic Park is one of the newest parks in the U.S. Park system. Mainly in Delaware, it is made up of several varied units stretching all the way from Wyeth Country in Pennsylvania, and following the forested and pastured Woodlawn Tract, originally part of William Penn’s estate. It includes several historic locations in Wilmington, the Old Courthouse and Sheriff’s House in nearby historic New Castle, and then traveling southward, the Town Green and the John Dickinson Plantation in Dover, and then furthest south, the oldest house in Delaware, the Ryves Holt House in Lewes. The park is cultural and historical in its aims, well suited to Artists who wish to explore nooks of little known colonial history, or just work in a beautiful country environment just 2 hours drive from New York or Washington DC, or 40 minutes from Philadelphia. It is also a quick 1 hour drive to the lovely eastern shore of the Chesapeake Bay or to Atlantic City, NJ.
