The information of marriages in pre-Islamic and early Islamic period were classified by tribes or clans (subtribes).     Journal of Religion & Society Volume 9 (2007) The Kripke Center ISSN 1522-5658 Muhammad’s Jewish Wives Rayhana bint Zayd and Safiya bint Huyayy in the Classic Islamic Tradition Ronen Yitzhak, Western Galilee College, Israel Abstract During his life, the Prophet Muhammad (570-632) married 12 different wives among whom were two Jewish women: Rayhana bint Zayd and Safiya bint Huyayy. These two women were widows whose husbands had been killed in wars with Muslims in Arabia. While Rayhana refused to convert to Islam at first and did so only after massive pressure, Safiya converted to Islam immediately after being asked. Rayhana died a few years before Muhammad, but Safiya lived on after his death. Classic Islamic sources claim that the Muslims did not like Rayhana because of her beauty and so made an issue of her Jewish origin, with Muhammad being the only one to treat her well. After Muhammad’s death, Safiya lived among his other wives in Mecca, but did not take part in the political intrigues at the beginning of Islam, in contrast to the other wives, especially the most dominant and favorite wife, Aisha. Introduction [1] According to Islamic tradition, the Prophet Muhammad married 12 different wives and had even more concubines. The custom of taking concubines was widespread in ancient times and therefore also was practiced in Arabia. Concubines were often taken in the context of war booty, and it seems that this is the reason for including in the Qur’an: “(you are forbidden) the married women, but not the concubines you, own” (Q 4:24; al-Qurtubi: 5.106).

M. Yunus Gilani & Tazul Islam ABSTRACT This paper aims to present an historical survey on the conflict between Islam and other religions. It undertakes an analytic textual reading of the concerned Quranic verses and a historical survey of the Prophet’s (pbuh) efforts to resolution of the conflict. This study finds that a multi-dimensional causes contributed to the conflict between the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and other religions. For example, Religious roots which was mainly caused by the Christians and Jews’ denial of prophecy of Muhammad (pbuh) after a clear prediction of his prophethood in their religious scriptures. However, politico-economy was another key element of this conflict in the early Islamic state in Madinah. Though this conflict had come to broad daylight in the Islamic era, had a long pre-Islamic root go back to the second and third century CE. Moreover, Jews and Christians had a genuine fear of being defeated by the new emerging Muslim power. Therefore, they had found themselves in conflict so that they could reign their hegemony over the territory. In addition, after a city state was established in Madinah, the Prophet (pbuh) found a demographic presence of Jews and their ally Quraish threatening it peace, security, stability and even assassination of head of the state. Hence, the conflict had become inevitable.

Questioned by Abu Sufyan, he said that Muhammad was in the field, stronger than ever, and thirsting for revenge for yesterday’s affair. On that in- formation, Abu Sufyan decided to return to Makkah. Tribes which had inclined toward the Muslims now inclined toward the Quraysh. The Prophet’s followers were attacked and murdered when they went abroad in little companies. Khubayb, one of his envoys, was captured by a desert tribe and sold to Quraysh, who tortured him to death in Makkah publicly. Expulsion of Banu-Nadh eer The Jews, despite their treaty, now hardly concealed their hostility. They even went so far in flattery of Quraysh as to declare the religion of the pagan Arabs superior to Islām. The Prophet was obliged to take punitive action against some of them. The tribe of Banu- Nadh eer were besieged in their strong towers, subdued and forced to emigrate. The Hypocrites had sympathized with the Jews and secretly egged them on. The War of the Trench In the fifth year of the Hijrah the idolaters made a great effort to destroy Islām in the War of the Clans or War of the Trench, as it is variously called; when Quraysh with all their clans and the great desert tribe of Ghatafan with all their clans, an army of ten thousand men rode against Madīnah.

    ALLIANCES AMONG THE ARABS* ELLA LANDAU-TASSERON The Hebrew University of Jerusalem The institution of alliance, called hilf in Arabic, played an impor­ tant role in pre-Islamic Arabian society, and continued to exist with certain modifications in Islamic times. Elsewhere I studied the ideo­ logical and legal problems precipitated by alliances in Islam. ^ Here I offer an investigation of other aspects of the institution as it existed both in pre-Islamic and Islamic times. I shall first briefly outline the structure of Arabian tribal society as a whole, and explain the princi­ ple of shared responsibility among agnates. This will be followed by a discussion of the different types of hilf. Arabian tribal society Arabian society of pre-Islamic and early Islamic times may be schematically described as consisting of hierarchies of agnatic de­ scent groups that came into being by a process of segmentation. Put differently, any given group considered itself as the descendants in male line of a single male ancestor, thus differentiating itself from other descent groups. At the same time, it considered itself as part of ever larger descent groups, because its members were also the off­ spring of the ancestors fiirther and fiirther removed up in the same male line. Any given descent group referred itself sometimes to a closer, at other times to a more distant ancestor.     Political Engineering and the Origins of Culture: The Institutional Foundations of the Rise of Islam David Siddhartha Patel Department of Political Science Stanford University Stanford, CA 94305-2044 DRAFT – COMMENTS APPRECIATED October 3, 2001 The spread of Islam and rise of the Muslim empire in the 7th century was one of the swiftest and most dramatic cultural changes in human history. This essay will explore how a fragmented nomadic tribal society from the deserts of Arabia remained Islamic after creating an empire in only a dozen years. A thorough explanation for the success of the Arab conquests is beyond the scope of this paper.1 Instead, the central question examined here is why allegiance to Islam became a cultural focal point for Arab tribesmen so quickly. What explains the rapid creation of an Islamic supra-identity and why did people condition their behavior on it?2 Why didn’t tribesmen defect from the Islamic system in the second half of the 7th century like they did in the first half? The central argument of this essay is that political engineering is responsible for the creation of this new cultural equilibrium. This is explored through an examination of two institutions propagated during the reign of the second rashid, ‘Rightly-Guided’ Caliph or ‘successor’3, ‘Umar bin Al-Khattab. I argue institutions purposefully created by ‘Umar to distribute the booty of the Islamic conquests and the manner in which new Islamic cities were organized (1) created incentives for tribesmen to convert to Islam and remain loyal, and (2) created mechanisms of common knowledge dissemination that made it easy to see how many other tribesmen had converted to Islam but difficult to identify how many might be interested in exiting the Islamic system (i.e.
