2018 Autumn News
No. 218 Autumn 2018 BTRDA Forest Rally Gold Star Champions 2018 Matt Edwards/Darren Garrod Photo: Kevin Money/Malcolm Almond President’s Notes September 2018 The week commencing the 3rd September was a sad one for me and for Motorsport generally. I heard on Monday that Bill Gwynne had passed away after a short illness and then on Saturday it was confirmed that Barrie " Whizzo" Williams had died. Bill Gwynne was just a lovely man and as talented on 2 wheels as on 4. He was still a member of the MSA Rallies Committee and Chairman of the British Rally School organisation. The Bill Gwynne Rally School is probably the most famous in the country and he helped, not only a lot of BTRDA drivers, but also International drivers to become more proficient at their driving. He was a great friend of the BTRDA. He was a Champion Motocross rider winning the Welsh Titles in 1958 and 59 becoming a works rider for many manufacturer teams. When he moved into cars, he quickly became the man to beat, winning both the Motoring News and BTRDA Silver Star titles in 1977 and 1978. My thoughts are with Bill's family and many friends. Barrie Williams was just a one off, a complete character and I was honoured to call him one of my friends. You always had fun in Barrie's company. I knew him for over 40 years. Although mainly known for his abilities in all types of racing cars, he started his motor sport career in rallying, winning the International Welsh Rally in 1964 in his private Mini against many works drivers. -

(SOA) today marked its 50th Anniversary with a ceremony for its 500+ employees at the automaker’s Cherry Hill, NJ headquarters (HQ) conducted by President and COO, Thomas J. Doll. Doll and Subaru employees, dressed in matching gold 50th anniversary T-shirts, counted down to zero on a 50th anniversary digital clock that has been marking down days in Subaru HQ for a year. Following a round of joyful applause, Doll unveiled a 3-by-4-foot, 300-pound bronze plaque, produced by local artist Chad Fisher. Taking inspiration from ‘The Stars of our Future,’ the plaque depicts two Subaru employees and the famous Subaru six-star cluster logo. “This was a great way to celebrate turning 50,” said Doll. “This company has seen so much in its 50 years, and now we can mark this anniversary on the back of 10 years of sales increases. Our employees are our bedrock and that’s why we are celebrating them with the amazing plaque by Chad Fisher, which represents our employees, retailers and customers. The plaque will last for the next 50,000 years and, as we have a bright future ahead of us, we very much look forward to what the next 50 years will bring for Subaru.” To kick off the year of celebrations in 2017, in a way that embodies the automaker’s spirit of supporting good causes and the local community, SOA donated 50 new 2018 Subaru Outback vehicles to select Meals on Wheels programs throughout the country to be used in the delivery of an estimated 53,000 meals to an additional 3,700 seniors across 39 states. -

Stars of the Stage
STARS OF THE STAGE When the World Rally Championship first began in 1973, only the car manufacturers fought for a crown; it wasn’t until 1979 that the drivers were recognised with their own world title. They soon made up for lost time, however, and over the past four decades the WRC has been a constant source of drama, heroism and displays of unbelievable skill. So as the Festival celebrates 40 years of the World Rally Drivers’ Championship this weekend, we remember some of those who have fought for and won the sport’s greatest prize STORY BY ANGUS FRAZER Left: Petter Solberg and co-driver Phil Mills celebrate victory in the 2002 Rally GB. Right: Sébastien Ogier powers his Citroën to third in the 2019 Argentine Rally Rallying’s first World Champion proved that while sublime skill and dogged determination are both prerequisites for victory, ruthlessness Björn is not. Described by those who knew him as a true gentleman (and sometimes as a teddy bear), the late Björn Waldegård won the inaugural World Rally Drivers’ Championship in 1979 (prior to that, the competition had Waldegård been held for two years as an FIA ‘Cup for Drivers’, won by Sandro Munari in 1977 and Markku Alén in 1978). All through that season, Waldegård battled Hannu Mikkola, his team-mate not just at Ford in the pace-setting Escort RS but also at Mercedes-Benz. The German company had 1979 hired the duo to pilot the powerful if unwieldy 5.0-litre V8 automatic 450SLC Coupé on the Safari and Ivory Coast events. -
