  • 2018 Autumn News
No. 218 Autumn 2018 BTRDA Forest Rally Gold Star Champions 2018 Matt Edwards/Darren Garrod Photo: Kevin Money/Malcolm Almond President’s Notes September 2018 The week commencing the 3rd September was a sad one for me and for Motorsport generally. I heard on Monday that Bill Gwynne had passed away after a short illness and then on Saturday it was confirmed that Barrie " Whizzo" Williams had died. Bill Gwynne was just a lovely man and as talented on 2 wheels as on 4. He was still a member of the MSA Rallies Committee and Chairman of the British Rally School organisation. The Bill Gwynne Rally School is probably the most famous in the country and he helped, not only a lot of BTRDA drivers, but also International drivers to become more proficient at their driving. He was a great friend of the BTRDA. He was a Champion Motocross rider winning the Welsh Titles in 1958 and 59 becoming a works rider for many manufacturer teams. When he moved into cars, he quickly became the man to beat, winning both the Motoring News and BTRDA Silver Star titles in 1977 and 1978. My thoughts are with Bill's family and many friends. Barrie Williams was just a one off, a complete character and I was honoured to call him one of my friends. You always had fun in Barrie's company. I knew him for over 40 years. Although mainly known for his abilities in all types of racing cars, he started his motor sport career in rallying, winning the International Welsh Rally in 1964 in his private Mini against many works drivers.

It’s been a year of both triumph and, unfortunately, tragedy and in this issue we take time out to remember María de Villota, whose passing in October left a deep void not just in motor sport but in all our hearts. María’s bravery following her F1 testing accident and the dedication she displayed afterwards – not only in promoting female involvement in motor sport but also safety on the road and track – will be missed. Elsewhere, it was a year of great success for women competitors and in this edition we look at Lucile Cypriano’s victory in the VW and commission-supported shoot-out for a place in next year’s VW Scirocco R-Cup and reveal how the FIA European Rallycross Championship has become a haven for female racers. It’s been a great year for CONTACTS: women in all forms of motor sport and IF YOU HAVE ANY COMMENTS ABOUT THIS NEWSLETTER OR we look forward to even more in 2014! STORIES FOR THE NEXT ISSUE, WE WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU.

  • Subaru Rally Team USA Encouraged by Improved Pace at Global Rallycross Championship Season Opener in Memphis
Subaru Rally Team USA Encouraged by Improved Pace at Global Rallycross Championship Season Opener in Memphis Cherry Hill, N.J., May 2, 2017: After completing their first round of the 2017 Red Bull GRC season in Memphis, TN, Subaru Rally Team USA left the event in good spirits despite a tough result in the final. After spending 2016 focusing on testing and development, the team debuted recently signed factory drivers Chris Atkinson and Patrik Sandell along with two completely new 2018 Subaru WRX STI Supercars at the Red Bull GRC season opener. The team showed improved pace with a commanding heat victory for Chris Atkinson and a pair of 2nd place heat finishes for Patrik Sandell before the duo were stymied from a good result in the Final. Chris Atkinson, a former Subaru World Rally Team driver with over 70 WRC starts in his career including 41 WRC stage wins and six podiums, had a challenging start to the event. In Heat 1A Atkinson was bumped while taking the GRC’s signature dirt jump, causing damage to his Subaru and slowing him to a 3rd place finish. He bounced back in the next race however, and dominated Heat2-A, leading from the start after an impressive launch and pulling away unchallenged to win by nearly 3 seconds. Atkinson was hit with bad luck in the Final after an electrical fault slowed his pace, although he closed in on fifth place he was later forced to retire from the Final, but was classified eighth overall. “The team has moved a good step forward; we won that heat early on and we’ve shown some good pace,” explained Atkinson.

  • Volkswagens Segerrad Bröts I Rally Argentina
