THE OLYMPIC GAMES (6) The Intercalated (Olympic) Games of 1906 in Athens Greece The partnership of World Expositions with the Olympic Games of 1900 and 1904 had been a disaster for the Olympic movement. Coubertin decided to support an” Intercalated Games” in Athens, Greece in 1906. Greece wanted the Olympics and the Olympic movement needed Greece and a successful Olympic competition. The concept was that Athens Greece would host an Intercalated Games two years preceding and following the Olympic Games. The Olympic Games would continue to be held every four years at different city sites throughout the five continents of the world. In 1906 twenty nations and close to nine hundred athletes participated in the Intercalated Games in Athens. The thirty‐five American athletes departing for Athens were funded for the first time by a special Olympic fund which was endorsed by President Teddy Roosevelt. On the second day of the Atlantic Ocean crossing, the SS Barbarossa endured a huge unpredicted sea wave which caused several deaths and seriously injured at least seven on‐board American Olympians. Earth quakes and volcanic eruptions in Italy and along the Mediterranean Sea made it difficult to resupply the SS Barbarossa with the proper food supplies to feed athletes. In one Italian port, custom officials maintained that the US mineral water supplies were instead “gin” under a bottle label not seen before. The port officials seized the “mineral water” and then gallantly replaced the “gin” with a matching supply of light Italian wines! American Paul Pilgrim was not selected to the US Olympic team because of his inexperience but he was allowed to travel with the team by paying his own way. -

The publication of a distinct series of books devoted to athletic sports and pastimes and designed to occupy the premier place in America in its class was an early idea of Mr. A. G. Spalding, who was one of the first in America to publish a handbook devoted to G. Spalding athletic sports, Spalding's Official Base Ball Guide being the initial number, which was followed at intervals with other handbooks on the sports prominent in the '70s. The Evolution of the Early Olympics
International Society of Olympic Historians - ISOH Contributing to understanding the history of the Olympic Movement and the Olympic Games http://isoh.org The Evolution of the Early Olympics The Evolution of the Early Olympics By Robin Voigt Baron Pierre de Coubertin, an influential French aristocrat and historian, proposed a revival of the Ancient Olympic Games at a congress that he organised in Paris in 1894. The congress resulted in the formation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Athens was chosen to stage the first of the Modern Olympics in 1896. Pierre de Coubertin had been keen for the inaugural Games to be held in Paris but as Ancient Greece was the birthplace of the Olympics, Athens was perceived to be the more appropriate choice to stage the first Games of the modern era. They became known as the Games of the First Olympiad and were declared a success. However the subsequent two Games after this were fraught with controversy and confusion. Both the Games of the Second Olympiad in Paris in 1900 and the Games of the Third Olympiad in St Louis, Missouri in 1904 were held in conjunction with the World’s Fair, and the sporting events were simply treated as a side-show to the main fair. They were disorganised, the venues were poor 1 / 15 and there were no officially agreed rules and regulations. In fact the 1900 and 1904 Games almost caused the downfall of the Modern Olympic movement and it took the interim Games of 1906 held in Athens and the London Games of 1908 to get them back on track. -
The Proposed Prize for Mountain Ascents
that, in the opinion of the Committee, none of the ascents which have been proposed for the prize, and the merits of which could, according to the stipulations of the competition, be taken into consideration, is of that exceptional importance which one has the right, as well as the duty, to demand for the award of an Olym pic Gold Medal; that the Committee is strongly of the opinion that there exists no satisfactory com mon basis for a comparison between different ascents, and that, consequently, a just award is impossible. The reasons on which the Committee bases this opinion are; 1. The frequent use of paid, professional guides in mountaineering, which makes it inevitable that the jury will run the risk of rewarding amateurs for what, in reality, is due to professionals, while it also makes it impossible to compare ascents carried out with, and without, assistance received from such guides. 2. The impossibility of comparing ascents of different character, such as, for in stance, a Dolomite rock-climb, a snow- and ice-climb in the Oberland, and an ascent in the Himalayas. 3. The impossibility of judging the conditions of weather and snow existing at the time of the ascent, factors which are of vital importance on every occasion. 4.
