James Hazlett May, 1987 PREFACE This dissertation is a business history of the Kansas City Live Stock Exchange, and a study of regulation in the American West. Historians generally understand the economic growth of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and the business institutions created during that era, within the perspective of "progressive" history. According to that view, Americans shifted from a public policy of laissez faire economics to one of state regulation around the turn of the century. More recently, historians have questioned the nature of regulation in American society, and this study extends that discussion into the livestock industry of the American West. 1 This dissertation relied heavily upon the minutes of the Kansas City Live Stock Exchange. Other sources were also important, especially the minutes of the Chicago Live Stock Exchange, which made possible a comparison of the two exchanges. Martha Hughes Cannon: An Example of a New Womanhood in Utah Martha Hughes Cannon, a nineteenth-century intellectual and activist, was described by a Chicago newspaper as "the brightest exponent of the women's cause in the United States."1 Cannon is most well known for being the first female state senator in the US. She ran as a Democrat and was elected on November 3, 1896. Cannon's additional claim to fame is that she defeated her husband, who ran as a Republican, by nearly 3,000 votes. A local paper commented on the husband's loss by saying, ``Mrs. Mattie Hughes Cannon, his wife, is the better man of the two. Send Mrs. Cannon to the State Senate and let Mr. Cannon, as a Republican, remain at home to manage home industry.''2 Martha didn't intend for her victory to overshadow her husband--she was simply trying to gain the power to enact the health reform legislation that she saw as necessary for the health of under-represented Utahns, such as women, children and the disabled. Despite Cannon's fame as a Utah Senator, she had many achievements under her belt before she ran for public office. At age nineteen she decided she wanted to be a doctor, and soon graduated from the University of Deseret with a degree in chemistry. Within five more years she completed her medical degree at the University of Michigan, went on to earn a B.S. from the University of Pennsylvania's School of Pharmacy and a bachelors of oratory degree from the National School of Elocution and Oratory. -

Teddy Roosevelt - The Trust Buster Teddy Roosevelt was one American who believed a revolution was coming. He believed Wall Street financiers and powerful trust titans to be acting foolishly. He believed that large trusts and monopolies were harmful to the economy and especially to the consumer. While they were eating off fancy china on mahogany tables in marble dining rooms, the masses were roughing it. There seemed to be no limit to greed. If docking wages would increase profits, it was done. If higher railroad rates put more gold in their coffers, it was done. How much was enough, Roosevelt wondered? The President's weapon was the Sherman Antitrust Act, passed by Congress in 1890. This law declared illegal all combinations "in restraint of trade." For the first twelve years of its existence, the Sherman Act was a paper tiger. United States courts routinely sided with business when any enforcement of the Act was attempted. 1. The Square Deal The Square Deal was Roosevelt's domestic program formed on three basic ideas: conservation of natural resources, control of corporations, and consumer protection. In general, the Square Deal attacked plutocracy and bad trusts while simultaneously protecting businesses from the most extreme demands of organized labor. In contrast to his predecessor William McKinley, Roosevelt believed that such government action was necessary to mitigate social evil, and as president denounced “the representatives of predatory wealth” as guilty of “all forms of iniquity from the oppression of wage workers to defrauding the public." Trusts and monopolies became the primary target of Square Deal legislation. -

November Woman’s Christian Barred from traditional politics, groups such as the Woman’s 1874 Temperance Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) allow women a public Union founded platform to participate in issues of the day. Under the leadership of Frances Willard, the WCTU supports a national Prohibition political party and, by 1890, counts 150,000 members. February 4, Interstate The Interstate Commerce Act creates the Interstate Commerce 1887 Commerce act Commission to address price-fixing in the railroad industry. The passed Act is amended over the years to monitor new forms of interstate transportation, such as buses and trucks. September Hull House opens Jane Addams establishes Hull House in Chicago as a 1889 in Chicago “settlement house” for the needy. Addams and her colleagues, such as Florence Kelley, dedicate themselves to safe housing in the inner city, and call on lawmakers to bring about reforms: ending child labor, instituting better factory working conditions, and compulsory education. In 1931, Addams is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. November “White Caps” Led by Juan Jose Herrerra, the “White Caps” (Las Gorras 1889 released from Blancas) protest big business’s monopolization of land and prison resources in the New Mexico territory by destroying cattlemen’s fences. The group’s leaders gain popular support upon their release from prison in 1889. -

As Mormonism (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) continues to appear as an ever-growing topic of interest in American media, there is a gap in discourse that addresses the implications of performances of Mormon beliefs and lifestyles as performed by both members of the Church and non-believers. In this thesis, I closely examine HBO’s Big Love television series, the LDS Church’s “I Am a Mormon” media campaign, Mormon “Mommy Blogs” and the personal performance of Mormons in everyday life. By analyzing these performances through the lenses of Stuart Hall’s theories of encoding/decoding, Benedict Anderson’s writings on imagined communities, and H. L. Goodall’s methodology for the new ethnography the aim of this thesis is to fill in some small way this discursive and scholarly gap. The analysis of performances of the Mormon belief system through these lenses provides an insight into how the media teaches and shapes its audience’s ideologies through performance. iv For Caity and Emily. -
