Over the last thirty years, two important attitudinal shifts within the global quiltmaking community have occurred accompanied by technological developments in specialized machine-quilting equipment. These forces have facilitated the reintroduction of professional quilting services by entrepreneurial quilters. Presented here are the results of research investigating Professional Machine Quilters and their customers as well as hobbyist owners of professional-caliber equipment. The participants in this research project, members of the contemporary quilt movement, are productive on creative, commercial, and educational levels within the quilt movement and they play a major role in the support, promotion, and perpetuation of the art of quiltmaking. By purchasing equipment, supplies, and textiles with which they can express their passion in quiltmaking, quiltmakers are contributing to the on-going financial strength of the industry. The current acceptance and appreciation of machine quilting and the collaboration between quiltmakers and the Professional Machine Quilters facilitate the ultimate goal, finished quilts, and thereby also facilitate the satisfaction and pride of the quiltmakers. Consequently, the satisfied quiltmaker begins to make another quilt, contributing again to an ever-growing industry and artform. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The few words on this page cannot express the depth of my gratitude and appreciation to the people without whose help and support, I could never have accomplished this project. The development of highly specialized machine-quilting equipment over the last thirty years has spawned a cottage industry of Professional Machine Quilters who play a significant and substantial part in the $3.58 billion quilting industry.1 This, in turn, makes their business activities and the impact on their customers worthy of analysis and report but, to date, this population has not been researched. The goal of my master’s thesis research was to achieve a deeper understanding of the community of Professional Machine Quilters, the equipment on which they work, the services they provide, and the customers of their services. I hoped to gain a broad perspective of the impact of this sub-community of professional quilters on the contemporary quiltmaking movement. The history of the Professional Machine Quilters begins in the late 1960s and early 1970s as a quilt revival gained momentum, influenced by the interest in Colonial Revivalism at the time of the nation’s Bicentennial. Culturally, quiltmakers were also impacted by the back-to-nature movement which emphasized hand-made crafts, self- sufficiency, and simplistic, atavistic lifestyles. By the mid-1980s and early 1990s, the quiltmaking industry was burgeoning. One might have expected a quiltmaking revival 1 based on nationalistic pride and cultural movements related to naturalism and self- sufficiency to have lost popularity as society

The Godey Quilt: One Woman’s Dream Becomes a Reality Sandra Staebell The Godey Quilt is a 1930s appliqué quilt composed of fifteen fabric portraits of men and women clothed in fashionable mid-nineteenth century attire. The dream of Mildred Potter Lissauer (1897−1998) of Louisville, Kentucky, this textile is a largely original design that is not representative of the majority of American quilts made during the early 1930s. Notable for the beauty and quality of its workmanship, the quilt’s crafting was, in part, a response to the competitive spirit that reigned in quiltmaking at the time. Significantly, the survival of the materials that document its conception, design, and construction enhances its significance and can be used to create a timeline of its creation. Reflecting Colonial Revival concepts and imagery, the Godey Quilt is a remarkable physical expression of that era.

It's true! Changing your needle is one of the best preventative machine maintenance tasks you can do. You want the tip of the needle to be super sharp to go through your fabric without catching the threads. As you stitch, the tip of your needle will get microscopic nicks. The longer you sew on that same old needle, the more your pretty stitches will start to deteriorate. Why spend time sewing crummy stitches? Don't forget while changing your needle to take off your needle plate and brush your machine's teeth (clean around and in between the feed dogs, etc). If you don't do this, eventually you'll have dense pads of lint collecting and building up and it will effect how your fabric feeds. You should also clean around your bobbin area every time you change your bobbin. Just a quick swipe with a little brush will do the trick. What needle should you use? Quilting Needles are made especially for piecing and machine quilting. The special tapered design allows for easier fabric penetra- tion and helps eliminate skipped stitches. If you are having trouble burying your threads while quilting, try a single hole plate. The smaller hole in the plate helps keep the fabric from pulling through to the bobbin and the bobbin thread from pulling to the top.

COLLINS ABSTRACT Historically, quilts have been denied the same copyright protection available to any other expression in a fixed medium. When quilts have been considered protectable, the protectable elements in a pattern have been limited, or the application of the substantial similarity test has varied widely. One possible explanation for this unequal treatment is that quilting is viewed as 'women's work.' Another is that quilts are primarily functional. However, quilts have evolved over time and may now be expensive collectible pieces of art; art that deserves copyright protection. This article traces the history of quilt making, addresses the varying standards of protection afforded to quilts and concludes that consistent and comprehensive protection is needed for this art form.
