PARTNERSHIP MID-WEEK UPDATE Date: 28th April 2020

LETTER OF HIS HOLINESS, POPE FRANCIS TO THE FAITHFUL FOR THE MONTH OF MAY 2020 Dear Brothers and Sisters, The month of May is approaching, a time when the People of God express with particular intensity their love and devotion for the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is traditional in this month to pray the Rosary at home within the family. The restrictions of the pandemic have made us come to appreciate all the more this “family” aspect, also from a spiritual point of view. For this reason, I want to encourage everyone to rediscover the beauty of praying the Rosary at home in the month of May. This can be done either as a group or individually; you can decide according to your own situations, making the most of both opportunities. The key to doing this is always simplicity, and it is easy also on the internet to find good models of prayers to follow. I am also providing two prayers to Our Lady that you can recite at the end of the Rosary, and that I myself will pray in the month of May, in spiritual union with all of you. I include them with this letter so that they are available to everyone. Dear brothers and sisters, contemplating the face of Christ with the heart of Mary our Mother will make us even more united as a spiritual family and will help us overcome this time of trial. I keep all of you in my prayers, especially those suffering most greatly, and I ask you, please, to pray for me. I thank you, and with great affection I send you my blessing. Rome, Saint John Lateran, 25 April 2020 Feast of Saint Mark the Evangelist Pope Francis (For Pope Francis’ prayers to Our Lady, please refer to page 2 of this update)

SPECIAL MASSES FOR OUR NHS AND FRONTLINE WORKERS The Catholic of England and Wales have asked us to pray for the NHS and other frontline workers. Beginning last week, our Bishops will offer Holy Mass each Thursday at 7:00pm, and these will be live streamed from a different Cathedral each week. The first of these Masses was celebrated at Westminster Cathedral, whilst subsequent Masses are planned for Arundel, Leeds, Newcastle, Shrewsbury and Middlesbrough. Preaching at the first of these special Masses for the sick, their families, healthcare workers and carers, the Archbishop of Westminster, Cardinal said the Bishops wanted to underpin the Thursday evening displays of appreciation and applause for the NHS to be underpinned by public prayer. Cardinal Vincent Nichols, went on to stress the importance of prayer, as well as applause for NHS and social care staff who are on the frontline of the COVID-19 pandemic. He also noted that “frontline workers, among the sick stand in a great and noble tradition. That tradition bears the hallmark of the Christian faith.” You can read a full report on Cardinal Nichols’ homily by following the link: https:// www.vaticannews.va/en/church/news/2020-04/cardinal-nichols-prayers-for-quiet-heroes-amid-epic- covid-strug.html For more information about subsequent special Masses, in particular the one to be live streamed from Newcastle, please visit www.rcdhn.org SUNDAY 3RD MAY 2020 IS WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS Resources for this special Day of Prayer are available on the Diocesan Website www.rcdhn.org.uk

Saturday 2nd May: Saint Athanasius Athanasius of Alexandria (c. 296–298 – 2 May 373), also called Athanasius the Great, Athanasius the Confessor or, primarily in the Coptic Orthodox Church, Athanasius the Apostolic, was the 20th Bishop of Alexandria (as Athanasius I). His intermittent episcopacy spanned 45 years (c. 8 June 328 – 2 May 373), of which over 17 encompassed five exiles, when he was replaced on the order of four different Roman emperors. Athanasius was a Christian theologian, a Church Father, the chief defender of Trinitarianism against Arianism, and a noted Egyptian leader of the fourth century. Conflict with Arius and Arianism as well as successive Roman emperors shaped Athanasius' career. In 325, at the age of 27, Athanasius began his leading role against the Arians as a deacon and assistant to Bishop Alexander of Alexandria during the First Council of Nicaea. Roman emperor Constantine the Great had convened the council in May–August 325 to address the Arian position that the Son of God, Jesus of Nazareth, is of a distinct substance from the Father. Three years after that council, Athanasius succeeded his mentor as archbishop of Alexandria. In addition to the conflict with the Arians, he struggled against the Emperors Constantine, Constantius II, Julian the Apostate and Valens. He was known as Athanasius Contra Mundum. Nonetheless, within a few years after his death, Gregory of Nazianzus called him the "Pillar of the Church". His writings were well regarded by all following Church fathers in the West and the East, who noted their rich devotion to the Word-become- man, great pastoral concern and profound interest in monasticism. Athanasius is counted as one of the four great Eastern Doctors of the Church in the Catholic Church. Athanasius is the first person to identify the same 27 books of the New Testament that are in use today. He is venerated by the Oriental and Eastern Orthodox Churches, the Catholic Church, the Lutheran churches, and the Anglican Communion. The Council of Nicaea (325), "passed twenty disciplinary canons for the better government of the Church. By one, C. 6, of these the Bishops of Rome, Alexandria, and Antioch, were declared to possess jurisdiction over the Churches in their respective provinces". Hence, the Alexandrian Bishop was declared with the authority of Patriarch.
