One Final Step With Steve "Arriving at the station" With this article, my term as president of the Junaluskans is drawing to a close. Yes, the train is pulling into the station. I love riding trains -- taking in the sights and sounds, conversing with December Events : other passengers, lots of time to read and write, and good food. That kind of sums up my role the past two years. This ’n That ……………………… APW Jack It was a Southern lunch after church, without the fried chicken. First were hot biscuits with real butter and southern iced tea – mostly unsweet with a splash of sweet for me. I didn’t go for the salad today, but the 4-veggie plate of southern traditional collards (a two-fer portion), the chef’s special creamy grits and spiced-just-right pintos, hit the spot. It was my first time at the Southern Porch restaurant in downtown Canton. And, to make it a real pleasure, the prices were reasonable, a nice surprise given its old hotel setting. The conversation included a walk-through of… Who Owns Property At Lake Junaluska? Each year about this time, Public Works sends out annual Service Charge bills. New Jack Carlisle residents, as well as some of those who have been around awhile, can be counted on to ask the question: What does the Service Charge pay for? It’s worth repeating, as the bills go out each December. The list mostly starts with “S”: Streets, Street lights, Stormwater, Security, plus Common area maintenance and Public Works Administration. Part of the process of preparing Service Charge bills includes pulling data annually from the Haywood County Property Tax Rolls. And, interestingly, the tax roll data tells another story. It provides some insight, collectively, about Lake Junaluska property owners. There are 1,026 separate pieces of property at Lake Junaluska. Of those, 487 owners or 47% have permanent addresses as listed Lake Junaluska (28745) or Waynesville (28785 and 28786). Flip that around, and 539 or 53% have permanent addresses away from here. The breakdown is as follows: 170 properties have owners with permanent addresses in North Carolina, but away from here and Waynesville. 103 properties have owners with permanent addresses in South Carolina. 79 properties have owners with permanent addresses in Florida. 77 properties have owners with permanent addresses in Georgia. 27 properties have owners with permanent addresses in Tennessee. The 83 remaining properties have owners with permanent addresses listed elsewhere. So what can we say about ourselves from the Tax Roll data? About half of our property owners are year round and half are seasonal or renting. Nearby states, not surprisingly, are primarily where non-resident Lake Junaluska property owners live as their permanent address. So there you have it. A profile of who owns property in our community. APW Jack

For our family, listening to Amy Grant sing while decorating the tree and house is a tradition. One of our favorite songs on her Home for Christmas album is titled, “It’s The Most Wonderful Time of the Year.” I really believe it is the most wonderful time of the year. That is especially true for those of us who have the joy of living at Lake Junaluska. The decorations are spectacular! Who doesn’t get filled with joy every time they see the beautiful way each of our buildings, inside and out, are decorated for Christmas? I know of no other community that has a group of volunteers who works so hard to decorate a community. We are so grateful for the years of service that Nancy and Roger Geyer gave to organizing the efforts to beautify the Lake at Christmas. Don and Pat Rankin have “picked up the mantle” and have done a marvelous job this year. The Lake Junaluska staff has also done a spectacular job decorating the inside of our buildings. If you have not been to Lambuth Inn this season please make certain that you go and enjoy the lobby. Oh, and make sure you visit our new Christmas Shop at Lambuth across from the front desk. The events are amazing! Is there another community our size in the world that has as many opportunities to experience so many first-class events as we do? By the time this edition of Lake Views and News goes to press we will already have experienced the first Balsam Range Art of Music Festival in Stuart Auditorium. As you know, the Junaluskans, have been the key sponsors of the Haywood Community Chorus, under the director of Kathy Geyer McNeil. Their concert will be on December 4 at First United Methodist Church in Waynesville. Appalachian Christmas is going to be wonderful this year. We are so grateful that Kathy Geyer McNeil has agreed to organize and direct the mass choir performance of Handel’s Messiah on Friday night, December 9. You will not want to miss that. The crowd favorite Cockman Family will be performing their annual Christmas concert on Saturday afternoon and the amazing women’s trio, Point of Grace, will be in concert on Saturday night, December 10. Tickets for these concerts can be purchased individually or as a package. And, of course, none of us will want to miss the annual Junaluskans Christmas Banquet at Lambuth Inn on December 13. This is always a highlight of the year for our organization. The food will be great and the fellowship even better. We will again have our own “community chorus” singing the songs of the season, led by Kathy Geyer McNeil. It indeed is the most wonderful time of the year. Thank you for helping to make Lake Junaluska the amazing wonderful place it is to live and work. Merry Christmas to all!

Appalachian Christmas Celebration This year Lake Junaluska welcomes Point of Grace for a special Christmas concert on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 7:30 p.m. This multi- platinum country-gospel group is one of the most impactful artists in Christian music. In their latest album, Directions Home , they collaborated with legends like Vince Gill and . The group has two Grammy nominations and 13 Dove awards, and their talent is marked by flexibility, vocal range and inspiring melodies. Point of Grace will perform. The celebrations kick off with a performance of Handel’s Messiah on Friday, Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m. Messiah is a baroque-era music composition by George Frideric Handel, composed in 1741-1742. This year’s performers includes Joyce Guyer, principal artist at the Metropolitan Opera for 16 seasons; Mary Gayle Green, professor at Appalachian State; Randall Outland, voice teacher and performer; and Ed Davis, who has sung for numerous performances in this area. They will be accompanied by strings, trumpet, an organ and a chorus. “We expect participation from members of Haywood Community Chorus, Givens Estates and area church choirs,” said Kathy Geyer McNeil, who is directing this year’s performance. The Cockman Family will play a matinee concert on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 2 p.m. Their signature bluegrass-gospel sound, warm family atmosphere and instrumental proficiency will delight the audience.“Over the last 21 years our children have grown up at Lake Junaluska,” said John Cockman. “We feel a real kinship to Lake Junaluska and the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. Junaluska is lovely any time of year but is especially magical at Christmas. Now with 12 performing grandchildren who have never missed a year at Lake Junaluska, we are proud to be part of another Appalachian Christmas .” Introducing Christmas Memories at Lambuth Inn Carry the joy of Christmas with you all year round. A visit to the historic Lambuth Inn isn’t complete without a stop at Christmas Memories, the new faith-based Christmas shop located across from the front desk. Junaluska Woman's Club's Appalachian Christmas Craft Show Saturday, December 10, 9AM to 4PM Harrell Center Auditorium Proceeds from this project support the Club's scholarship fund. Pamela Justice has finally found the “job” she loves in retirement. She retired in 2013 after working in education for many years. She enjoyed her first summer as a retiree, spending a lot of time with her husband at the lake. Then as cold weather approached she began to wonder how she, always very active, would fill her days. Not wanting to be tied down to a full-time job, she began mulling over different hobbies she thought she might enjoy. After rejecting several ideas she came to the conclusion that soap making would be the perfect hobby for her. Years ago a friend had introduced her to handmade soap and she fell in love with it but had a difficult time finding soap with the blend of ingredients and essential oils she liked. After purchasing several books on soap making and watching many videos, Pamela gave soap making a try. After a few trial and error attempts, she had success and was immediately hooked on soap making! She originally thought of making a few bars for her family, but soon was making soap for extended family and friends. Pamela said, “The more soap I made, the more soap I wanted to make! This little hobby that started with a few base ingredients and a few essential oils morphed into a “job” that I really love.” That “job” has become Carolina Lily Naturals and Pamela has expanded her “hobby” with several other bath and body products that she really enjoys making. Macon & Green Photo Art is the venture of Susan Macon and Ed Green, Waynesville residents who have combined photography with their love of nature. Susan, a graduate of UNC Chapel Hill, is an advocate for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault at a local non-profit agency. In her free time she makes pottery and pursues her love of photography. Her family is originally from the Great Smoky Mountains and the mountains have always called to her. “I have always had a deep appreciation of beauty in art and nature, but realize that I am completely inept at drawing and painting,” Susan said. “However, I can capture beauty with a camera.” Susan’s picture taking was sidelined during some for some time during very busy years with family and career, but with the purchase of her first 35 mm single-lens reflex camera she immediately became reabsorbed with photography. Susan finds herself seeking interesting and beautiful scenes all around her through photography. “This is a wonderful way to be in the world, and to remember and share the places I love,” Susan said. Ed, a native of Maggie Valley, is a retired registered nurse and a graduate of NC State University. He has always loved to explore the back roads of the region looking for the perfect photo. Of special interest to Ed are old barns and the numerous waterfalls in the mountains of WNC. “I have always had a love and appreciation for the beauty of the Appalachian Mountains,” Ed said. “I live on the fringe of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which I feel is the center piece of this beauty.” Ed said that some 40 years ago he developed an interest in photography with the idea preserving images of this area that he loves. “As the years have gone by,” he said, “my interest has deepened and expanded. I now want to capture these images and share them with others. I often think as I am taking photos, that what I am seeing will never look that exact way again. The seasons will return, the leaves will turn and snow will fall again, but the light, the cloud formations and the colors will never be that same exact way again. I enjoy shooting water with reflected images, and the idea of this once in a lifetime view is very profound this setting.” Submitted by Marie Metcalf Page 5 Nancy Coghill, Treasurer
