It was there that our students shared dresses, dolls, hats, and laptops with a village of families who gratefully received them. While Franck has been in the U.S. to visit universities, AC is the only independent school he visited and he said, “I compare everything to our country, but even as we try to have new things in Madagascar, it’s impossible to have all the technology and the art you have here. I am so glad AC came to our school and shared what you have.” While one group of AC students was on the east coast of Africa, our French students were exploring life on the west coast of Africa in Senegal. They attended a Senegalese school that offers a bilingual International Baccalaureate program and lived a life completely immersed in Senegalese culture with their host families. After school each day, there was time for exploration. Students visited the historical Gorée Island, the Slave House that many U.S. presidents have visited when traveling through West Africa, and one of only two pink lakes in the world. In addition to connecting to “another family” around the world, students also had the unique opportunity to work

“Back on campus, at the Centre ValBio facility, Dr. Wright gave us the task of sorting some classifed bones in her fossil collection. Angele, the house paleontologist, helped us sort the 9,000 year old fossils. The fossils had been dated in Helsinki and were discovered by Dr. Wright and a few colleagues at a “Christmas River” site in Madagascar. The fossils were split into four groupings based on species. We sorted Aepyornis (Elephant bird), crocodile, turtle, and pygmy hippo bones. Two students from Duke University helped us go through the boxes and bags of hundreds of bones. It felt weird handling the extremely old fossils. It was also incredibly hard to categorize them. Over time, our knowledge of hippo anatomy improved. While sorting the fossils we looked for different clues. For instance, Aepyornis bones have a lot of air pockets. A few bones connected together like puzzle pieces. The vertebrae and jawbones with teeth were the coolest to analyze.”

Technology As technology has evolved, we have seen it go from a novelty, to a tool, to a way of life. Over the last six years, our Middle School has gone one-to-one with iPads, and our Lower School has adopted a one-to-one program with Chromebooks. We’ve launched a new one-to-one technology learning environment in the Upper School and provided incoming 9th grade students MacBooks. Additionally, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders can apply for MacBook use if they do not have access to a computer at home. Over the next three years, we will move our entire Upper School to a one-to-one environment!
