Now that I have an M.F.A., I hope that I can shower you both in beautiful art in perpetual thanks for your sacrifices as Filipino immigrants. You afforded me so many opportunities and privileges in life, and I am forever grateful. To all artists (dramaturgs and otherwise) who are inspired to create social justice art that foster community-building and inclusivity. May your art help us all imagine more loving worlds that we may one day live in. Keep creating. Shake up the system. Teach us new ways of how to love ourselves and everyone in the world. To my little brother Avery. You’re an amazing human being. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to thank my thesis chair, Priscilla Page, for her loving support and guidance for the past three years. Her mentorship has helped me grow into a wiser and more socially conscious artist, teacher, and human. I am forever in deep gratitude of your presence in my life. I also offer my deep appreciation to Harley Erdman whose masterful teaching and immense kindness has always given me space to grow as a dramaturg and playwright. Thank you to Daniel Sack for his wisdom and encouragement throughout the thesis writing process. Thank you to Svati Shah and Lezlie Frye of the UMass Amherst Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Department for their guidance and their excellent course instruction. I am extremely grateful to the creative team, cast, and crew of The Lily’s Revenge, who dared to produce such a massive undertaking. It was from your sheer love of theater and its potentiality to create a better, queerer, and more inclusive world that helped me continue to work throughout the rehearsal process. I also want to acknowledge the generosity of theater artists Rachel Chavkin, Nina Mankin, and Nick Vaughan, original collaborators with Taylor Mac on The Lily’s Revenge, for taking the time to consult with me and Onopa. To Jennifer Onopa, thank you for always being a such a collaborative director. I’m honored that I had the opportunity to embark on this journey and completing our M.F.A. degrees together. I am doubly honored to call you a close friend and artistic collaborator. To Avery G. Trinidad, my little brother. I normally attend the theater alone. If I have to go see a production with anyone, I would always choose you first. Thank you for always supporting my artistic ambitions. v ABSTRACT QUEER TEMPORALITY AND AESTHETICS IN TAYLOR MAC’S THE LILY’S REVENGE: A DRAMATURGICAL EXPLORATION OF THE PLAY AT UMASS AMHERST SEPTEMBER 2018 GAVEN D. TRINIDAD, B.A., DICKINSON COLLEGE M.F.A., UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST Directed by: Professor Priscilla Page This master’s thesis documents the dramaturgical exploration of the spring 2018 University of Massachusetts Amherst Department of Theater’s production of gender non- conforming performance artist Taylor Mac’s The Lily’s Revenge. The thesis is separated into two parts. The first half focuses on my dramaturgical analysis of Mac’s play and its exploration of queer temporality and queer embodiment, asserting the importance of queer aesthetics in American drama and its vital role in shaping the future of LGBTQIA+ politics in the United States. The second half includes reflections on rehearsal processes and performances, giving readers and fellow artists examples of the potential of queer dramaturgical practices that are products of LGBTQIA+ theater and politics in the United States. These reflections show the application of research to rehearsal processes into theatrical performances as directed, designed, and performed by graduate and undergraduate students at UMass Amherst Department of Theater, located in Amherst, Massachusetts, thus giving a trajectory of how the queer and feminist theories written into the play are manifested into a full production through collaborative design, movement, staging, and performance. Drawn from my discoveries while working on The Lily’s Revenge as production dramaturg, I have shaped my own style of collaborative “queer vi dramaturgy” with the director and designers, hopefully, opening new entry points of future explorations for queer dramaturgs to synthesize theory and practice onto the stage with collaborators from all disciplines and identities. vii TABLE OF CONTENTS Page ACKNOWLEDGMENTS…………...…………...………….…………..………………..v ABSTRACT………….………….………….………….………….……………………..vi CHAPTER 1. Known for durational drag spectacles such as the five-hour The Lily’s Revenge (2009), Mac writes about the devastating effects of the gender binary, compulsory heteronormativity, and conformity to Western social practices such as marriage. Using the terms “queerness” and “queer temporality” as defined by scholars Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore and José Esteban Muñoz, respectively, Mac and judy’s artistic collaborators view queer time and embodiment as always pointing beyond current

PERFORMERS BiU Withers By Rob Bowman He was the leading figure in the nascent black singer-songwriter movement of the early 1970s. BILL WITHERS WAS SIMPLY NOT BORN TO PLAY THE record industry game. His oft-repeated descriptor for A&R men is “antagonistic and redundant.” Not surprisingly, most A&R men at Columbia Records, the label he recorded for beginning in 1975, considered him “difficult.” Yet when given the freedom to follow his muse, Withers wrote, sang, and in many cases produced some of our most enduring classics, including “Ain’t No Sunshine,” “Lean on Me,” “Use Me,” “Lovely Day,” “Grandma’s Hands,” and “Who Is He (and What Is He to You).” ^ “Not a lot of people got me,” Withers recently mused. “Here I was, this black guy playing an acoustic guitar, and I wasn’t playing the gut-bucket blues. People had a certain slot that they expected you to fit in to.” ^ Withers’ story is about as improb able as it could get. His first hit, “Ain’t No Sunshine,” recorded in 1971 when he was 33, broke nearly every pop music rule. Instead of writing words for a bridge, Withers audaciously repeated “I know” twenty-six times in a row. Moreover, the two-minute song had no introduction and was released as a throwaway B-side. Produced by Stax alumni Booker T. Jones for Sussex Records, the single’s struc ture, sound, and sentiment were completely unprecedented and pos sessed a melody and lyric that tapped into the Zeitgeist of the era. Like much of Withers’ work, it would ultimately prove to be timeless.

August 2012 Newsletter ------------------------------------ Yesterday & Today Records P.O.Box 54 Miranda NSW 2228 Phone: (02) 95311710 Email:[email protected] www.yesterdayandtoday.com.au ------------------------------------------------ Postage Australia post is essentially the world’s most expensive service. We aim to break even on postage and will use the best method to minimise costs. One good innovation is the introduction of the “POST PLUS” satchels, which replace the old red satchels and include a tracking number. Available in 3 sizes they are 500 grams ($7.50) 3kgs ($11.50) 5kgs ($14.50) P & P. The latter 2 are perfect for larger interstate packages as anything over 500 grams even is going to cost more than $11.50. We can take a cd out of a case to reduce costs. Basically 1 cd still $2. 2cds $3 and rest as they will fit. Again Australia Post have this ludicrous notion that if a package can fit through a certain slot on a card it goes as a letter whereas if it doesn’t it is classified as a “parcel” and can cost up to 5 times as much. One day I will send a letter to the Minister for Trade as their policies are distinctly prejudicial to commerce. Out here they make massive profits but offer a very poor number of services and charge top dollar for what they do provide. Still, the mail mostly always gets there. But until ssuch times as their local monopoly remains, things won’t be much different. ----------------------------------------------- For those long term customers and anyone receiving these newsletters for the first time we have several walk in sales per year, with the next being Saturday August 25th.

  • The Hollyridge Strings
The Hollyridge Strings The Hollyridge Strings were an in-house act released by Capitol Records. Throughout the 1960's, they were perhaps best known for their instrumental versions of Beatles songs. In fact, so popular was their first album that an album exists by "The Mustangs" whose cover is a take- off of the cover to the first instrumental Beatles album by the Strings. Stu Phillips arranged and conducted the first three volumes, plus the album with solo songs on it. Perry Botkin, Jr. and Mort Garson did the honors on volume four, but Garson alone did the job on volume five. Botkin had previously conducted the Strings some years before. For the interested fanatic, here are the Hollyridge Strings' Beatles albums in all their glory: The Beatles Song Book Capitol (S)T-2116 Side One Side Two 1. From Me to You 1. Can't Buy Me Love 2. I Saw Her Standing There 2. All My Loving 3. Please Please Me 3. A Taste of Honey 4. P.S. I Love You 4. Do You Want to Know a Secret? 5. Love Me Do 5. She Loves You 6. I Want to Hold Your Hand Two songs from this LP are featured on the promotional album, Balanced for Broadcast, from June, 1964 (Capitol PRO-2634/5). The album was also reviewed in the June 6, 1964, issue of Billboard. This record surprised all critics by climbing to the #15 position in the Billboard album listings (August 22, 1964). As it continued to sell, the success of this album, the Strings' first, prompted Capitol to create a series of songbooks -- a series for which the band became known.

Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

  • Everything Everything - a Fever Dream
Everything Everything - A Fever Dream Across three albums, immense acclaim and intense adoration, the sound of Everything Everything has remained a volatile beast; a musical bucking bronco, their albums maximalist, frenetic, art-pop juxtapositions of R’n’B and melancholia and Afrobeat, of synths, guitars, falsetto. Critics have written of the frenzy of it, of the sheer sublime sweet sensory overload of it all. Their fourth album, A Fever Dream, is a quite different prospect: a calibration of chaos and control, the result of a curious desire for consistency. As guitarist Alex Robertshaw puts it: “Our records have been many styles rubbing up against each other, and for the first time I wanted to make a record that was cohesive sonically.” Midway through touring 2015’s Get To Heaven, Robertshaw found himself listening increasingly to the kind of electronic music he had loved as a teenager — early Warp Records releases, Aphex Twin, Autechre, Boards of Canada, relishing “the atmosphere and the attitude” of them. “I wanted to go back to that thing that first made me excited about music,” he says. “We’ve spent a lot of time going into that R’n’B and hip hop world — for an indie band it was a bit of an untouchable thing, and it was really fun to do and I think we captured it at its best with Kemosabe and Arc. But once you start doing that you kind of separate yourself.” Contemplating a fourth album, and after an extensive run of touring, Robertshaw felt a need to reconnect with the sounds that had first thrilled him and inspired him to begin making music.

UNIVERSITY OF WYOMING AMERICAN HERITAGE CENTER GUIDE TO ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY RESOURCES Child actress Mary Jane Irving with Bessie Barriscale and Ben Alexander in the 1918 silent film Heart of Rachel. Mary Jane Irving papers, American Heritage Center. Compiled by D. Claudia Thompson and Shaun A. Hayes 2009 PREFACE When the University of Wyoming began collecting the papers of national entertainment figures in the 1970s, it was one of only a handful of repositories actively engaged in the field. Business and industry, science, family history, even print literature were all recognized as legitimate fields of study while prejudice remained against mere entertainment as a source of scholarship. There are two arguments to be made against this narrow vision. In the first place, entertainment is very much an industry. It employs thousands. It requires vast capital expenditure, and it lives or dies on profit. In the second place, popular culture is more universal than any other field. Each individual’s experience is unique, but one common thread running throughout humanity is the desire to be taken out of ourselves, to share with our neighbors some story of humor or adventure. This is the basis for entertainment. The Entertainment Industry collections at the American Heritage Center focus on the twentieth century. During the twentieth century, entertainment in the United States changed radically due to advances in communications technology. The development of radio made it possible for the first time for people on both coasts to listen to a performance simultaneously. The delivery of entertainment thus became immensely cheaper and, at the same time, the fame of individual performers grew.
