Carlisle District: Rural Masterplanning WARWICK BRIDGE LITTLE CORBY & CORBY HILL WARWICK BRIDGE, LITTLE CORBY AND CORBY HILL Figure 1: Location of Warwick Bridge, Little Corby and Corby Hill May 2013 Page 1 Carlisle District: Rural Masterplanning WARWICK BRIDGE LITTLE CORBY & CORBY HILL Settlement Profile Strategic Position Warwick Bridge sits in an elevated position looking North West towards the River Eden. It is in a strategic location on the main A69 Carlisle to Newcastle trunk road; 5 miles east north east from Carlisle and 4.5 miles south west of Brampton. This main road provides easy access to the local market town of Brampton. Warwick Bridge serves a number of rural hamlets and is well served by local bus services operating between Brampton and Carlisle, and cross-country services between Carlisle and Newcastle. The village is made up of the three merged settlements of Corby Hill, Little Corby and Warwick Bridge. The village grew historically due to the mill that is located just outside the village. This served as the main source of employment for the population of the village. General description of settlement Little Corby, Warwick Bridge and Corby Hill each developed individually before expansions in various directions led them to merge, to appear now as one settlement. The village has grown in a linear form along the busy A69 route with further later residential growth expanding Little Corby and Corby Hill. There is a busy crossroads controlled by traffic lights towards the end of the village in the East. There is a small area of village green adjacent to the crossroads.

  • Tracing the Problems Faced by British Rare Breed Producers
Tracing the problems faced by British rare breed producers What’s the real issue behind the Horsemeat scandal? The ‘Horsemeat Scandal’ revealed a fundamental breakdown in the meat supply chain and a complete disconnection between us, the public, and the food that we eat. 100% traceability is a crucial requirement for protecting our edible biodiversity, an issue particularly relevant to the sheep and cattle industries. Traditional rare breed producers up and down the country are fighting an uphill battle to keep these products on our plates. With the current system favouring larger, fast maturing, commercial breeds, it is up to us to offer the much needed support to these farmers. The ‘Horsemeat Scandal’ showed the scale of the task many of our rare breed producers are facing. However the sensational stories which shocked the nation largely excluded the plight of the small scale producer. It is easy to get hung up about the labelling of horse meat as beef but isn’t it equally scandalous that wonderful British breeds - such as Blue Grey cattle, Old Gloucester cattle and Herdwick Sheep, with all their unique qualities - are being lost in a mountain of nameless meat! At a time when meat consumption is at its highest ever levels, we have a responsibility to be responsible consumers. There has to be a very real and drastic change in the way we think about and buy meat. What can you as the consumer do? At a very basic level, we need to show that there is a demand to know what we’re eating.

  • Assessing Changes in the Agricultural Productivity of Upland Systems in the Light of Peatland Restoration
Assessing changes in the agricultural productivity of upland systems in the light of peatland restoration Volume 1 of 1 Submitted by Guy William Freeman, to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Biological Sciences, June 2017. This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. (Signature) ……………………………………………………………………………… 1 Thesis abstract Human activity has had a profound negative impact on the structure and function of the earth’s ecosystems. However, with a growing awareness of the value of the services provided by intact ecosystems, restoration of degraded land is increasingly used as a means of reviving ecosystem function. Upland landscapes offer an excellent example of an environment heavily modified by human land use. Agriculture has been the key driver of ecosystem change, but as upland habitats such as peatlands can provide a number of highly valuable services, future change may focus on restoration in order to regain key ecosystem processes. However, as pastoral farming continues to dominate upland areas, ecosystem restoration has the potential to conflict with existing land use. This thesis attempts to assess differences in the agricultural productivity of the different habitat types present in upland pastures. Past and present land use have shaped the distribution of different upland habitat types, and future changes associated with ecosystem restoration are likely to lead to further change in vegetation communities.
