In fact, human resource of a region or country is considered when its people are well educated, trained and technologically advanced and when any country or region having this sort of human resource will certainly generate the other resources which become the basis of development of any area. There are some regions in the country like Punjab, Haryana, Maharashtra, etc, which are advanced in terms of development on the other hand Bihar, UP, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, etc. are lagging much behind. There are regional disparities in terms of education, income, health and infrastructural development. Some spots have developed and having natural beauty to fascinate the people from other areas, which boosts tourism and bring the development there. Therefore, this seminar will focus to measure the population growth rate, reduction in poverty and improvement in overall living conditions. Regional disparities and at the end it will come out with a road map of how to bring development from micro to macro level. We have received very good response from the states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and from various district of the Maharashtra. We have received the research paper related to the main themes and sub-themes. The proceeding published at the time of conference will be helpful to the researches who wish to undertake research in the near future. So, I am very glad to publish this proceeding. Kanase Research Scholar, Research Guide, Dept. of Geography, Principal, Shivaji University, Kolhapur Mahavir Mahavidhylya,Kolhapur INTRODUCTION Fishing as an occupation has been in vogue since time immemorial. It is a sunrise sector of our economy. Fishing plays an important role in increasing food supply, generating job opportunities, raising nutritional level and earning foreign exchange. Fish and fisheries is an important sector in most of the developing and developed countries of the world from income and employment generation is concerned. There are two important sectors in Fisheries namely, Marine Fishery and Inland Fishery. Both sectors play an important role in the Indian economy. Marine fisheries is an important sector of the nation‟s economy supporting the livelihood of the millions of fisher-folk inhabiting the long coastline of India and those who are engaged in the related activities. OBJECTIVES The broad objective of the research paper is to understand the scenario of marine fishing in the South Konkan region. The following are the objectives of the study. To study the marine fishing resources in the study area. To analyse the trend of marine fish production in the area under study. STUDY AREA For the present research, study area is selected from the South Konkan region of Maharashtra state. It is located between 15036' north to 18050' north latitudes and 74036' East and 75050' East longitudes, comprising Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. It has a north-south extent of 450 km and east west extent of 65 km. It is having average height of 1350 meters from the mean sea level and it covers 13,295 sq.km area and a supporting 24, 61,540 population as per the 2011 Census. The climate in the study area is hot-humid and salty throughout the year. Weather in the rainy season is humid and in winter season it is cool. METHODOLOGY The present research paper is based on the secondary data collected from the Fish Production Report of Department of Fisheries of Maharashtra (2001-02 to 2011-12), Manual of fisheries statistic of India and other related published and unpublished reports. Besides these, information regarding the proposed study is taken from various reports and journals. In order to process the data, per cent technique is applied to calculate the trend of fish production and its utilization. The collected information is tabulated and conclusion is drowned. Peshwas went on conquering places as far as Panipat and Atak and extending the boundaries of the kingdom beyond Chambal river in North India. This finest palace of the time (1730-1818) but now in dilapidated condition is in the heart of the Pune city. This palace as it finally stood was a seven-storeyed building with four large and several small courts some of which were named as Ganapati Rang Mahal, Nach Diwankhana, Arse Maltal, Hastidanti Mahal. Today, the remains (enclosure, plinths and the surrounding wall) are mute witnesses of the past Maratha glory. This is the 1st school and education center of the area and after counseling the parents SAMPARC made it possible to send children to the school. The children are mostly from poor background and belong to schedule caste, schedule tribe, OBC and Maratha community. They depend on their relatives for their livelihood and parents send their children for labour work. The parents were encouraged to send their children from age group 16-19 yrs and continue their education at least until 10th standard as SAMPARC was providing free education for students living in the hostel. The school provides a good platform for various extracurricular and cultural activities too. The school bagged many District & Taluka Level Awards & Medals for special performance in sports. Coaching in sports is provided to many enthusiastic youngsters in a 3-acre wide specially prepared sports ground. SAMPARC Page 1 The Education Department of the State Government has recognised this school as the “Best School in Mulshi Taluka of the year 2005”. The school has 8 well-furnished classrooms, kitchen-cum-dining hall, toilets, laboratory, library and computer room, a huge playground for the students. The project has developed a water reservoir /check dam on 1.5 acres of land and 5 acres of land is brought under agriculture cultivation.

    CHAPTER II NATURAL ENVIRONMENT OF THE STUDY AREA Chapter II Natural environment of the study area 2.1 Introduction It is necessary to study the natural environment of area as it directly or indirectly influences the health of the local people. Therefore, in the present work, the existing environment of study area has been discussed. For this purpose environmental components have been studied for assessment of groundwater quality in the study area. The components studied are geology, hydrology, climate, and geomorphology. 2.2 Study area Shirur Taluka of the Pune District has been selected for the present research work (Fig 2.1). It is located in the north-eastern part of Pune district. The Headquarter of the Tehsil is 68 km away from Pune city. Shirur Taluka is drought prone area. The study area lies in the river basin of Bhima, Ghod and Vel. These rivers together with rainfall offer water resource for agriculture and other activities. The area receives an average rainfall of 733 cm. The geographical location of the study area can be expressed as from 18° 49' 00"N latitude to 19° 14' 00"N latitude and from 74" 22' 00"E to 75 ° 30' 00"E longitude included in the survey of India topographic sheet Nos. 47J/1, 47J/2 47J/5, 47J/6, 47J/10, 47J/11 and 47 1/4 on the 1:50000 scale. The Taluka comprises about 116 villages having only one urban centre i.e. Shirur (Table 2.1). The population of the Taluka according to the census (2001) is 6, 48,179.

The success is after 17 years where education has become compulsory and parents agree to send their children for completing their education.
