  • People, Look East! Celebration of Mass Ad Orientem at Good Shepherd Advent and Christmas 2020
PEOPLE, LOOK EAST! CELEBRATION OF MASS AD ORIENTEM AT GOOD SHEPHERD ADVENT AND CHRISTMAS 2020 INTRODUCTION Angels announce with shouts of mirth Him who brings new life to earth. Set every peak and valley humming With the word, the Lord is coming. People, look East and sing today – Love, the Lord, is on the way.1 1. In the normal course of events, outside of pandemic restrictions on our Masses, we would put these words on our lips at least once during the Season of Advent. People, look East, and sing today – Love, the Guest, the Rose, the Bird, the Star, the Lord, is on the way. Why look East for the coming of the Lord? 2. Part of that answer may come readily. “Because Bethlehem is to the East!” During this Season of Advent, we prepare to welcome the Christ Child, who was born in that direction. Just as those magi from the East set their sights West toward Bethlehem to find him, we in the West set our sights East for the same reason. We look East so that we may encounter the Lord who comes to us in gentleness, in mercy, and in love. 3. There is, however, another reason to look East during Advent – a reason why people both West and East of Bethlehem look in that direction. For we also enter into this Season of Advent preparing to welcome Christ when he comes again2 “in glory to judge the living and the dead.”3 Love, the Lord, tells us that when he comes again, he will come from the East.

  • On the 'Orientation' of Ancient Synagogues and Churches
84 chapter three CHAPTER THREE ON THE ‘ORIENTATION’ OF ANCIENT SYNAGOGUES AND CHURCHES Introduction This chapter is divided in two sections. In the first section, the theological implications for having a direction of prayer are exam- ined in light of the Jewish sources. This evidence is contrasted with what is known about direction of prayer from the Christian sources. Apparently Jewish writers were not overly concerned with this issue. Moreover, no single authoritative view is expressed, which might be a result of the form of the Jewish sources themselves. This situation stands in marked contrast to the Christian view from as early as the second century CE, in which the East is understood as the ‘correct’ direction to offer prayer. In the second section of this chapter, the archaeological evidence is presented for prayer in the Jewish and Christian realms. First, the criteria used by archaeologists to define the functional aspects of rectangular synagogue halls used by Jews are examined. Second, evi- dence found by archaeological excavation is reassessed to determine the validity of modern assumptions regarding direction of prayer. Indeed, apses and niches in synagogues are the best evidence for direction of prayer in synagogues, as in Christian practice. Finally, the archaeological evidence from Palestine and Syria is presented to show that apses and the raised bema preceding the apse were features of even the earliest churches. 3.1. Where was the Divine Presence? In 70 CE, after a three-year siege, the Legio X Fretensis had not only destroyed Jerusalem, but had also obliterated the Temple, the unique house of Yahweh, where the Shekinah or “Divine Presence” supposedly dwelt.

  • Out of Jewish Roots Studies of Prayer Patterns in Jewish, Christian, Muslim and Bahá’Í Worship by Ted Brownstein
Out of Jewish Roots Studies of Prayer Patterns in Jewish, Christian, Muslim and Bahá’í Worship by Ted Brownstein Abstract Daily prayer is one of the essential practices of the Abrahamic religions. Some of the progressive elements of this series of revelations are demonstrated by this paper as an exploration of the development of liturgy and personal prayer patterns from its roots in Judaism and subsequent development in Christianity, Islam and the Bahá'í Faith. Introduction Progressive revelation is central to Bahá’í theology. It is the bedrock upon which belief in the fundamental unity of religion is built, as it provides a conceptual basis for seeing the interconnections between the world’s diverse religions. All are seen as equally valid paths to God. At the same time each is seen as a spiritual advance- ment, built upon the traditions and successes of its predecessors. in accordance with the principle of progressive revelation every Manifestation of God must needs vouchsafe to the peoples of His day a measure of divine guidance ampler than any which a preceding and less receptive age could have received or appreciated. (WOB 102)* Less well known but perhaps equally significant, is the Bahá'í understanding of progressive revelation within the history of each religion. Receptivity of the people to new spiritual insights grows as previously revealed teachings are digested and absorbed. Thus spiritual advancement is seen as an ongoing process within each religious community. To the extent that believers grasp and apply the fundamental teachings of their founding prophet, capacity for further learning is generated.

Kennedy Professor Margaret R. Somers Associate Professor Andrew Shryock Assistant Professor Genevieve Zubrzycki © Mucahit Bilici 2008 “tuba lil guraba” ii Acknowledgements In the writing of this dissertation and the many years of study that led up to it, I have accumulated a lot of debt to a great many people. I have been extremely lucky to have Fatma Muge Gocek as my advisor. Ever since I came to Ann Arbor, she has provided me with the support and guidance without which my experience of graduate school would have been far different. She has been an inspiration for me in intellectual courage and academic self-confidence. She did what all excellent mentors should do: while providing the necessary direction, she always let me be myself. Working with her has been a deep pleasure and she will be my role model for academic mentorship in the years ahead. I am also thankful to Michael Kennedy. Even when I seemed unsure of myself, Michael remained supportive and confident about my ability to produce original work. Special thanks go to Margaret Somers, from whom I learned the intricacies of social theory and the sociological importance of the concept of citizenship. I am indebted to Andrew Shryock in many ways. I have been fortunate to be part of the Building Islam in Detroit project initiated by him and Sally Howell.

WORKING PAPER THE IMPORTANCE OF JERUSALEM FOR THE THREE MONOTHEISTIC RELIGIONS Sofía Saínz de Aja M.A. in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies The Hebrew University of Jerusalem INDEX: I Introduction: Why Jerusalem? II Main Historical Events III The importance of Jerusalem for Jews A. In the Bible B. The Temple of Solomon IV The importance of Jerusalem for Christians A. In the Gospel B. The Holy Sepulcher V The importance of Jerusalem for Muslims A. In the Quran B. The Dome of the Rock VI Conclusions VII Bibliography I. INTRODUCTION What does Jerusalem have that other cities lack? Where is the secret ingredient of this city? How come humanity has been fighting for this place for over three thousand years? When exactly it all started? And finally, Why Jerusalem? One can only venture and say that the importance of Jerusalem resides in the fact that it is the only city in the history of mankind that has been claimed over and over again by the only three monotheistic religions as their Holy City. In this way, Jerusalem, therefore, represents the presence of God on earth; it is their link to heaven on earth. For the Jews the land was Holy even before they occupied it, by reason of God's having promised it to them. First with Abraham and then with Moses, the One God made his Covenant and brought his people to the promised land, Canaan, where Jerusalem was later conquered by King David. The fact that the Temple was built in Jerusalem and that the Ark was installed inside it were just the natural consequences of that Covenant with God.

  • V. the SANCTITY of JERUSALEM in ISLAM the Sanctity of Jerusalem
    V. THE SANCTITY OF JERUSALEM IN ISLAM I The sanctity of Jerusalem provides one of the most controversial issues in the Arab-Israel conflict. Jerusalem is a holy city in Islam. The roots of this belief will be examined here in some detail. Why is it that Islam, which originated in the Arabian peninsula and far removed from Palestine, came to invest Jerusalem, of all cities, with an aura of sanctity? Were the sages of Islam always unanimous on this issue? Why was this belief so devoutly nurtured in Islamic tradition? Of course, any answer to these questions will be only partial because of the complexity of the pro blems and traditions involved, and also because of the over abundance of material on this subject available in Arabic sources as well as in general research literature. Nevertheless, a general summary of traditional and scholarly views of the problems involved may help to clarify the issue. The concept that Jerusalem is sacred to Islam stems from both Judaism and Christianity. But scholars are divided on the question as to which of the two religions had the stronger influence on Mul_lammad, and who were his outstanding teachers. Some are inclined to opt for the theory that they were Jews; others think they were non-orthodox Christian sectarians. There is no doubt, however, among scholars that Mul_lammad took some basic concepts from both Judaism and Christianity. Among others these include the Unity of God, the Covenant between man and his Maker, man's responsibility for his own actions, the Day of Judgement, and reward and punishment.
