4 JULY EDITORIAL

What happened next? It was a pleasant morning and I was exercising my dog on the river green near to Horstead Mill. The smell of bacon wafted over from the picnic table on July 2013 the green where three men were enjoying the Community News Letter for Coltishall, morning sunshine and eagerly awaiting their Horstead with Stanninghall, Great & breakfast rolls filled with the bacon that was Little Hautbois and Badersfield. sizzling in the pan on the primus stove. My dog, perhaps in disgust at not being included in the Volunteer Editorial Staff breakfast party was chewing on his stick rather than chasing it. My attention drifted to the grazing Editor & Advertising: Mel marshes where a heron had taken flight and was Douglass then landing very near to the old lock. It was 01603 736 016 seeking concealment amongst the reeds and I was [email protected] lamenting the fact that once again I did not have my camera with me when I needed it. However all Secretary: Philippa Weightman was not lost as one of the three men had his 01603 737 962 camera and was taking photos of the heron. [email protected] Following a conversation with him an arrangement was made for the subsequent photo to be sent to Treasurer: Anne Gilbert me. It was and it forms July’s front cover. Although 01603 737 577 I left the green shortly after that it was then that [email protected] the real action started. The heron, no doubt influenced by the breakfast being enjoyed on the Compilation: green had decided that it was time for a breakfast [email protected] of his own and fortunately our man with the camera was able to capture the action (see page Advert/Copy: Derek Allday 25). 17 By Derek Allday BOATS OF THE NORFOLK BROADS The Gun Punt The Gun Punt was a craft used by wild fowlers for over 200 years around Britain. In some areas they were also called duck punts. These craft were used to quietly manoeuvre around the edges of reed beds surrounding our many Broads. During certain times of the season the wild fowlers would set out decoys (carved wooden ducks with small weights on string as anchors, to stop them drifting away) to entice ducks to land so they could be shot. Punts were constructed very simply with a flat bottom, made from wood, they had to give a very low profile above the water. They could be rowed using oars and once in the area for ducks then a small paddle was used to manoeuvre the punt with a single hand, leaving the other free for the gun. A large shotgun would be mounted on the front of the punt (as the illustration on the left shows) to dispatch the ducks. Many wild fowlers had dogs that would swim out and collect the ducks and bring then back to the boat. Marsh men would often supplement their income by wild fowling, to put food on the table by selling most of their catch to the local Squire or butcher. There is a tale of a wild fowler called Old Scientific Fuller, who it is said, got 7 ducks with one shot. The picture above on the right shows 2 Gun Punts on display at the Museum of the Broads
