WCG ( College Group) is proudly in its eighteenth year delivering courses for 14-16 year old students. Spanning centres in Warwickshire and , our Colleges deliver vocational courses, personal and social development and English and maths. Our 14-16 programmes are offered to meet the needs of those students who have a vocational interest and those who are at risk of school exclusion or lacking in motivation and engagement. These programmes not only offer a stepping stone into post- 16 study but also raise a student’s self- esteem, motivation and aspirations.

3 HELLO We understand that the next stage in your education is hugely important and that there are a lot of decisions to make. In this guide you’ll find information about course options across WCG for schools students.

STRENGTH IN NUMBERS We’re WCG - seven colleges of excellence across Warwickshire and Worcestershire, each with their own feel and specialist 7 subjects.

MONITORING AND SAFEGUARDING WCG is fully committed to the safeguarding and welfare of all of our students. We have a duty of care to our students and want them to feel safe at college. We have staff for students to turn to who are responsible for dealing with reported cases of abuse of children and vulnerable young adults. All students will be informed of these designated people as part of their course induction. Whilst at college all students will have a personal tutor and parents/guardians and carers will receive 2 college reports each year – there will also be the opportunity to attend parents events.

APPLICATION AND INTERVIEW All students will be expected to complete a pre-programme interview and assessment. In some cases students may be asked to complete a taster session or work trial to confirm suitability for a programme. Places on all programmes will be offered subject to this and satisfactory disclosure of supporting information.

7 DESIGN ENGINEER CONSTRUCT*

The DEC! programme offers a new and innovative project based approach to learning that is both challenging and rewarding with a focus on the technical and professional aspects of the Construction and Built Environment sector of industry. This 1 year programme is predominantly theory based and will be offered for 1 day per week. This programme is aimed at students in school years 10 and 11. This is a Level 2 progarmme and all students should be predicted/working towards at least 4 grade D GCSEs including English and Maths. Students should also have a proficient use of IT. Progression can include study at Level 3 and A-Levels. All students will be expected to attend a pre-course interview and will be required to complete an assessment. This course is offered on a bespoke basis only. Individual applicants will also be considered for infill places on alternative programmes.

AWARD IN HAIR AND BEAUTY STUDIES*

This course will offer an introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector and is designed to build on students interest and passion for the hair and beauty industry. The course will have theory and practical elements to prepare students for further learning or training such as Level 2 Hairdressing or Level 2 Beauty Therapy. This 1 year programme is predominantly theory based and will be offered for 1 day per week. This programme is aimed at students in school years 10 and 11. This course is offered on a bespoke basis only. Individual applicants will also be considered for infill places on alternative programmes.

FOUNDATION CONSTRUCTION

This Entry 3 Award programme will offer students the opportunity to study a variety of trades with equal practical and theory elements. This will include the craft areas of Brickwork, Carpentry, Plumbing, Plastering, Painting and Decorating and Tiling. Successful completion of the course could lead to progression onto specialist full-time courses in the trade areas covered.This programme is aimed at students in school years 10 and 11.

POSITIVE CHOICES

This course is intended for students who want to gain new skills, improve confidence, self-esteem and progress onto further education programmes or employment. Students will study towards a BTEC Level 2 Certificate in Workskills for 3 days per week and content will include; personal, team and interpersonal Skills, enterprise activities, preparation for work and employment and presentation Skills. Students will also have the opportunity to study Functional Skills English and Maths.This programme is aimed at students in school years 10 and 11.

8 PRINCE’S TRUST ACHIEVE

This 3 day per week course will run from September 2017 for 18 weeks and is delivered in partnership with Prince’s Trust. Students will have the opportunity to gain new skills, improve confidence, self-esteem and progress onto further education programmes or employment. Students will complete the Prince’s Trust Level 1 Award in Personal Development & Employability and also have the opportunity to complete Functional Skills English and Maths qualifications. This programme leads onto the Headstart programme as detailed below.

HEADSTART This Level 1 programme will run from January 2018 for 18 weeks. Students will study a BTEC Level 1 Certificate in Workskills with and is intended for those who wish to gain new skills, improve confidence, self-esteem with a focus on post- 16 progression. Students will have the opportunity to study Functional Skills English and Maths and complete enterprise and preparation for work activities.

CATERING This Entry Level 3 course is intended for students who wish to gain vocational skills in the catering area. It offers students the ideal opportunity to train in a work based environment and learn how to prepare, cook and serve food. Areas of study will include; Food preparation and cooking in a catering kitchen, Food service and maintaining a dining area in the college Bistro, Safety in a catering environment, Personal and food hygiene and Nutrition and healthy eating. This programme is aimed at students in school years 10 and 11.

SPORT*

The aim of this programme is to provide students with an introduction to the sports industry, there will be both practical and theory elements to this course. Through studying different career options students will develop a range of valuable skills such as leadership, planning, initiative and teamwork. On successful completion of this qualification, students can progress onto further study in Sport and Public Services. This programme is aimed at students in school years 10 and 11. This course is offered on a bespoke basis only. Individual applicants will also be considered for infill places on alternative programmes.

FOUNDATION MOTOR VEHICLE

This course will offer an introduction to the Motor Vehicle industry with equal theory and practical elements. Offered at Level 1 students will study Health and Safety, Foundation Skills, Chassis Components, Engines and Components, Transmissions, Vehicle Electrics and Vehicle Construction. This course provides a foundation for developing general skills, with a balance between practical skills development and underpinning knowledge.All applicants will complete a pre- programme interview and should have a keen interest in the subject area. This course is offered on a bespoke basis only.

EQUINE/HORSE CARE (2 YEAR PROGRAMME)

The Equine and Horse Care course will provide a foundation for developing general and equine skills, with focus balanced between practical skills development and underpinning knowledge. Students must have a keen interest in the subject area and all applicants must be competent riders and securely able to walk, rising trot and canter. All applicants will complete a riding assessment at interview. This course is offered on a bespoke basis only.

20 NEW FOR 2017 We recently opened our brand new £5.8m building which hosts our spectacular Collections House, living wall, library and classrooms. But it doesn't stop there, we're planning a brand new Agri-Tech Lab and STEM Centre (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). In the lab will be state-of-the-art technology used in agriculture and horticulture including Unmanned Aerial Vehicles with HD, thermal and multi-spectral imaging. Gaming equipment and high-spec PCs will enable you to create simulations and visualisations of different environments. Try out GPS and GIS surveying equipment, sensor technology and robotics and see how they are used in industry. This course will offer an introduction to the Landbased sector, students can select one of three pathways, Animal Welfare, Countryside Skills or Horticulture. This can be offered at Level One and will introduce the student to a range of skills, these will include safe working practices, working with plants and animals to include animal handling This programme is aimed at students in school years 10 and 11.All students will be expected to attend a pre-course interview
