The House of Broken Flowers. I'm not doing the formal introduction but I just have to share that I loved loved loved this novel and Seattle shows up just CNO in The New York Times review that just came out via Taan when I said this all complicated all compelling and Urias powerful rendering of a Mexican American family that is also an American family. And what is your Raya's novel. But a Mexican American novel that is also an American novel. -

POUR LES PETITS The rule of thumb we all learned when teaching our youngest language learners is that the length of any activity should be calculated by one minute per one year of age of our students. It is a pretty reliable measure, and, as we have noticed recently, the ability of children to focus seems to be weakening with the constant exposure to small bites of information on television and other electronic media. We need to be able to provide multiple activities for a class of very young students, so it is helpful to have a bag of tricks on hand to resort to in order to keep our younger classes moving. The following are two quick games that can be incorporated into your young classes—and they work with older students as well! PAS MOI! My fi rst graders never tire of this game! The only materials you need are enough index cards for the class. Write on all but one: “PAS MOI” and on one “C’EST MOI.” Once you have made the cards, they are available for the rest of the year! LINGUISTIC GOAL: Re- inforcement of “IL S’APPELLE...” and “ELLE S’APPELLE....” THE GAME: Choose one student to do the guessing. Distribute cards to ev- eryone else, making sure they don’t show anyone what is on the card. Folding cards in half helps. The student guessing has three chances (or as many as you wish) to guess who has the C’EST MOI card. Students must use correctly “IL” and “ELLE” and French names if you have assigned them. -

Higher Dimensional Conundra Steven G. Krantz1 Abstract: In recent years, especially in the subject of harmonic analysis, there has been interest in geometric phenomena of RN as N → +∞. In the present paper we examine several spe- cific geometric phenomena in Euclidean space and calculate the asymptotics as the dimension gets large. 0 Introduction Typically when we do geometry we concentrate on a specific venue in a particular space. Often the context is Euclidean space, and often the work is done in R2 or R3. But in modern work there are many aspects of analysis that are linked to concrete aspects of geometry. And there is often interest in rendering the ideas in Hilbert space or some other infinite dimensional setting. Thus we want to see how the finite-dimensional result in RN changes as N → +∞. In the present paper we study some particular aspects of the geometry of RN and their asymptotic behavior as N →∞. We choose these particular examples because the results are surprising or especially interesting. We may hope that they will lead to further studies. It is a pleasure to thank Richard W. The Diffusion of Foreign Cultural Products: The Case Analysis of Japanese Comics (Manga) Market in the US Takeshi Matsui Hitotsubashi University/Princeton University Abstract This paper outlines the historical development of the US manga (Japanese comics) industry from the 1980s through the present in order to address the question why foreign cultural products become popular in offshore markets in spite of cultural difference. This paper focuses on local publishers as “gatekeepers” in the introduction of foreign culture. Using complete data on manga titles published in the US market from 1980 to 2006 (n=1,058), this paper shows what kinds of manga have been translated, published, and distributed for over twenty years and how the competition between the two market leaders, Viz and Tokyopop, created the rapid market growth.
