Head Coach In her sixth season as Drexel women’s basketball Head Coach Denise Dillon brought the school its first CAA Denise Dillon title ever. The conference’s 2009 Coach of the Year Seventh Season guided her team through a dream season last year that saw the Dragons ascend to new heights of success in Villanova ‘96 the conference and make a name for themselves nation- ally. Dillon’s squad won the 2009 regular-season CAA 2009 CAA Coach of the Year title outright, knocked off 17-time defending tourna- 2005 CAA Co-Coach of the Year ment champion Old Dominion in the semifinals of the 2009 CAA Tournament and bested James Madison on Career Record: 96-84 (six years) its home court to claim the school’s first ever CAA Championship and NCAA Tournament berth. CAA Record: 61-47 (six years) Dillon brought a winning attitude and vision of success Highlights: to Drexel when she took over as head coach in 2002-03 2009 CAA Championship and it has pervaded her program ever since. Each class 2009 NCAA Tournament of Dragons has grown to believe in themselves, their 2nd most wins in Drexel history abilities and Dillon’s system of basketball. And last sea- son, those intrepid Dragons made believers of the entire conference. Drexel’s drive to succeed was never more evident than when the Dragons took their place atop the conference last year in a style that was all their own.

Dillon earned her second coach of the year honor by guiding the Dragons to their best record ever, 24-9 overall, and a 16-2 mark in CAA play, which was also the team’s record for most conference victories. While the Dragons entered the season with high expectations, picked to finish third in the preseason coaches and media poll, Dillon’s team more than lived up to its billing. Led by CAA Player of the Year Gabriela Marginean, All-CAA guard Jasmina Rosseel and one of the best court leaders in the confer- ence, Dean Ehlers Leadership Award recipient Andrea Peterson, Drexel reeled off a 16-game winning streak that matched the longest in the program’s history. After starting conference play 3-2, Dillon’s team did not lose again until the NCAA Tournament.

Last season’s climb to the top was only possible because of the steps built along the way by the sacrifice and determination through a progression of Dillon-coached squads over the past six years. During her tenure, Dillon has coached four winning teams, three of which set program records for CAA victories, and brought the school its first ever CAA Championship.

Dillon is already the second winningest coach in the history of the Drexel program and sits on the precipice of her 100th career coaching victory. She has 96 career wins and last season she became the quickest coach in Drexel history to reach the 90-win mark. Her system for coaching and developing student-athletes has prepared them for success on the court, as well as, in life after basketball.

Much of Dillon’s coaching philosophy is derived from lessons learned during her Hall-of-Fame playing career at and, following it, working alongside some of the top basketball minds in the Philadelphia area. From 1993-96 Dillon started in the post for coaching legend ’s . She was a unanimous pick for the Big East All-Rookie Team in 1993 and followed that up with three All-Big East and All-Big 5 seasons on the Main Line. She was just the 12th player in Villanova history to reach the 1,000-point scoring mark in her career and finished with 1,355 points and 677 rebounds, both totals are among the Wildcats’ all-time best. Perhaps her greatest honor as a player came on January 30, 2004 when the Philadelphia Big 5 inducted her into its Hall of Fame

Dillon graduated from Villanova in 1996 with a degree in elementary education. While transitioning from playing to coaching, Dillon assumed an assistant coaching role for Perretta at Villanova from 1997-2001. During this time Dillon learned the intricacies of teaching Perretta’s motion offense, many of which have become hallmarks of Drexel’s offense scheme. Dillon joined the Drexel coaching staff in 2001 as a top assistant responsible for recruiting and player development. She helped to sign and coach one of the best forwards in the program’s history, Catherine Scanlon, who was a four-year All-Conference selection and is currently play- ing professional basketball in Europe.

She earned her first head coaching opportunity in 2003 when she was named Drexel’s interim head coach for the 2003-04 season. After dropping the “interim” tag in 2004-05, Dillon led the Dragons to a 19-10 season, a third place finish in conference play, and a trip to the semifinals of the CAA Tournament. The CAA named the second-year head coach its Co-Coach of the Year, signaling Drexel’s climb toward the top of the conference.

Since then, Dillon’s teams have gone on to post winning records and advance in the CAA Tournament in three of the last four sea- sons, including last year’s run to the championship She has a 61-47 record against conference opponents and is the only active CAA coach to guide her team to a victory over Old Dominion in the conference tournament.
