The plot is relatively simple – Charley and Jack invite Amy and Kitty, with whom they are enamoured, to lunch to meet Charley’s wealthy widowed aunt, Dona Lucia. Charley has never met her himself. However at the last minute, she cancels, and in order to provide a chaperone for the two young ladies they enlist the assistance of their friend Lord Fancourt Babberly to impersonate her. Madness and mayhem ensue as ‘Charley’s Aunt’ becomes the target of affection for both Jack’s father and Amy’s uncle; then the real Dona Lucia arrives, and the dynamics change again. Keith McGowan talks on Shakespeare’s music Music was an important part of Shakespeare’s plays, and not just as songs and sounds off, but as a source of imagery for the rise and fall of Kings, and for the joy and dismay of lovers. In this illustrated talk, The Royal Academy of Music’s Keith McGowan will demonstrate both of these aspects: music as the big idea of universal harmony that influences and unites the earth and the stars, and as the multicoloured palate of historical sounds available to musicians at the various levels of society. There will the chance to hear, see, and touch a variety of instruments of the period; to learn the steps of a galliard; to experience the harmony of the spheres; to carouse in a round that would get Malvolio out of bed. The meeting will finish with the sort of jig that might end a performance at The Globe. Presented by the News From Nowhere Club. The Woodhouse Players present Terence Rattigan’s Separate Tables The Woodhouse Players celebrate the centenary of Terence Rattigan’s birth with this double bill of linked plays, set in the Beauregard Hotel in 1950s Bournemouth. For much of the time, life at the Beauregard is uneventful. As mealtime follows mealtime, the hotel’s permanent residents grumble and gossip. But there can be sudden disruptions, too. In Table by the Window, it is the unexpected arrival of a glamorous guest that provides the catalyst, while in Table Number Seven, set 18 months later, it is a scandalous revelation that rocks the boat. In both cases, what subsequently unfolds is rich in humour and pathos, demonstrating Rattigan’s astounding mastery of the English language and underlining his status as one of the country’s most popular Twentieth Century dramatists.
