Further comments about BLESSSED ARE THE POOR? by Laurie Green You have in your hands a rare and special document. Here unearthed for you are deep stories of hope and possibility as well as stories of hardship and dismay. These stories belong to the often forgotten residents of Britain’s housing estates. Laurie Green bears witness to how God is very present and how theology and church can become alive because of the mysterious part that those who are marginalised often play in the purposes of God. Ann Morisy Ann is a freelance community theologian, lecturer and author. Her best-selling books include Beyond the Good Samaritan and Journeying Out. This is an excellent book. If you are engaged in urban ministry, in housing estates, you will find a huge amount to help you understand the context, to challenge your thinking and to make your practice better. This book should also be read by all who have power in the church. Andy Delmege – convenor of the Estate Churches Group, Birmingham. This carefully researched but highly readable book combines detailed reflection on biblical resources with historical and sociological perspectives on housing estates and issues of urban poverty and, most significantly, the experience and stories of poor people themselves. Rejecting platitudes and romanticism, it is a powerful demonstration of the practice of contextual theology and offers a persuasive and provocative interpretation of what Jesus meant when he pronounced the poor 'blessed'. Stuart Murray Williams Stuart is a theologian and author, the founder of Urban Expression, and an experienced urban minister. He currently teaches mission and is Director of the Centre for Anabaptist studies.

  • Serving with Accountability - 2019
Serving with Accountability - 2019 2015 was the first year that we tried to incorporate the ‘serving with accountability’ dimension of ‘Transforming Presence’ alongside a slimmed down format for the Archdeacons’ Articles of Enquiry. As you know, the vision expressed in ‘Transforming Presence’ makes spirituality and evangelism two clear priorities in the life of the church, along with the need to re-imagine ministry. Nevertheless. there needs to be some means whereby this is joined together – hence the importance of serving with accountability. Every PCC is being invited to do a ‘self-audit’ in the light of the themes of ‘Transforming Presence’. The set of questions below will help you in that task. It is not intended that PCCs should cover all nine in any one year, but you may wish to look at the two or three areas where the church is doing well or to identify any weaknesses that are felt to be a hindrance to the church's mission. You should aim to consider each of the nine questions at some point over the next few years. Once you have conducted this year’s exercise, please let us have some notes of your discussions. It would be good if you could also review last year’s response as well, so that progress can be celebrated and new challenges identified. If they have asked you to do this, please send these to your archdeacon by 30th November, 2019. Many thanks for your help in this, The Ven. Elwin Cockett - Archdeacon of West Ham The Ven. Vanessa Herrick - Archdeacon of Harlow The Ven.

  • New Bishop of Barking Says It Is a Privilege to Be Joining a Diocese Which Is on the Move with God
Friday 2nd May 2014 NEW BISHOP OF BARKING SAYS IT IS A PRIVILEGE TO BE JOINING A DIOCESE WHICH IS ON THE MOVE WITH GOD The Venerable Peter Hill, Archdeacon of Nottingham, has been nominated by Her Majesty the Queen as the new Bishop of Barking in succession to The Rt Revd David Hawkins. Peter Hill said: “The call of God to be a bishop has come unexpectedly and I am both excited and daunted by the task that lies ahead. “It is a privilege to be joining a diocese which is on the move with God and is currently celebrating 100 years of mission and ministry. I am energised and challenged by its vision and determination, led by Bishop Stephen, to be a transforming presence for Jesus in people's lives and communities. I intend to play my full part in that vision and action. “As Bishop of Barking I very much look forward to taking a lead in the Episcopal Area with its rich diversity of faiths and culture, and engaging fully in its public life. East London and South Essex are expanding rapidly and I know there is adventure and challenge ahead for the people of God as we share the Good News of Jesus Christ in a changing world. “It will be great working alongside a strong and creative leadership team as we build on the past and work to re-imagine the ministry and service of the church for the future.” The Bishop of Chelmsford, The Right Reverend Stephen Cottrell, added: “I am delighted that Peter Hill has agreed to be the next Bishop of Barking.
