I am sincerely grateful to the efforts of everyone who has helped contribute to the making of this Plan which is so important for the future of Powys. Importantly, the Plan sets out a clear and strong strategy for meeting the future needs of the county’s communities over the next decade. By focussing development on our market towns and largest villages, it provides the direction and certainty to support investment and enable economic opportunities to be seized, to grow and support viable service centres and for housing development to accommodate our growing and changing household needs. At the same time the Plan provides the protection for our outstanding and important natural, built and cultural environments that make Powys such an attractive and special place in which to live, work, visit and enjoy. S T R A Y S Volume One: !'IARRIAGES Introduction This volume of 'stray' marriages is published with the hope that it will prove of some value as an additional source for the familv historian. For economic reasons, the 9rooms' names only are listed. Often people married many miles from their own parishes and sometimes also away from the parish of the spouse. Tracking down such a 'stray marriage' can involve fruitless and dishearteninq searches and may halt progress for many years. - Included here are 'strays', who were married in another parish within the county of Powys, or in another county. There are also a few non-Powys 'strays' from adjoining counties, particularly some which may be connected with Powys families. For those researchers puzzled and confused by the thought of dealing with patronymics, when looking for their Welsh ancestors, a few are to be found here and are ' indicated by an asterisk. A simple study of these few examples may help in a search for others, although it must be said, that this is not so easy when the father's name is not given. I would like to thank all those members who have helped in anyway with the compilation of this booklet. A second collection is already in progress; please· send any contributions to me. WSA Water Quality Monitoring Update 10 Dec 2020
WSA Water Quality Monitoring Update 10 Dec 2020 It is now nearly 6 months since we began sampling Phosphate (P) levels in the Wye in the river. To date we have taken some 259 samples at 14 locations in the river & tributaries. Our team of volunteers has grown to 11 with the addition of monitoring the main river at Fawley. When lockdown and river levels permit we will install a water temperature monitor as part of our ongoing Temperature Monitoring programme at the same location. Whilst we are observing some interesting data on P levels it remains inappropriate to draw firm conclusions until we gather a more substantive volume of data from a range of conditions throughout the year. However, there are some initial interesting results that encourage more detailed investigations. I have attached our spreadsheet for information. If you wish a full ‘excel’ file for your personal study and analysis please email me at [email protected] Some of our data is being analysed by an undergraduate at Cardiff University, himself an angler. Beginning with basic mapping of the sites he will follow on to study temporal trends in phosphate and river levels. At first look he is beginning to observe trends between water colour and phosphate level which seems likely rainfall linked. He will use various techniques to produce visual representations of the spatial and temporal variations in water chemistry. More at our next update. In tandem with the usual phosphate checks for WSA, and in the aftermath of the most recent fish kill on the Llynfi, Gwent AS has invested in an ammonia checker which records NH3-N. -

The usual definition of Strays, are those persons baptised, married, buried, found in an obituary (and sometimes, on a census, etc) outside the county (not parish) of their birth. Record the details carefully for surnames & place names (BLOCK CAPITALS), county of origin, where the event took place, newspaper title, full date & page number, parish register, BT, gravestone (identify churchyard), etc. and email to the strays co-ordinator. Powys FHS Burials Index The Powys FHS National Burials Index 1813-1851 has now a total of 54,026 entries, of which 33,116 have been sent to the Federation for inclusion in the next NBI DVD. Breconshire & Radnorshire are complete for the period 1813-1851 and have been published on CD and are available from Heather Bufton, work is progressing on Montgomeryshire. The index contains checked data, unchecked information is not included in the main combined database, but is added as and when it has been checked. Free lookups are available from Phil Bufton. POWYS - churchyard sites with younger yews CPAT refers to the Clwyd/Powys Archaeological Trust BEGUILDY St Michael SO194797 25/4/2004 Tim Hills In 1995 CPAT noted ‘a line of 3 yews west of the church, only one survives, the others have stumps only. Another yew S of the porch’. In 2004 I found several pieces of yew stump in a thicket of elder south of the church. One of the smaller pieces supported large amounts of new growth. It seemed to me that pieces of the felled yews west of the church had also been dumped with the remains of the yew south of the church. BETTWS CEDEWAIN St Cedewain SO1227396827 1995 CPAT In 1995 CPAT noted a ‘group of four yew bushes on northern edge of the graveyard, and the stumps of two others south of them. A slightly older yew tree located near east end of church’. BETTWS DISSERTH St Mary SO1162256934 1996 CPAT In 1996 CPAT noted ‘one yew tree of no great age on north side of church’. BOUGHROOD St Cynog SO1278839290 1995 CPAT In 1995 CPAT noted ‘a couple of yews but not of any great age’. BRECON PRIORY (Brecon Cathedral) 28/6/2004 Steve Waters A smallish yew at the Cathedral churchyard - 3.37m girth at 1.50m but with distinct hollowing both of branches and trunk. BUILTH WELLS St Mary SO0396051037 1996 CPAT In 1996 CPAT noted ‘some yews scattered through yard with a few other species. None appears to be of any great age’. I’ve owned a Honda CX500 and before that, in my much younger days, a 250cc Super Dream on which I undertook the Members’ Corner 2 “European Grand Tour”. Motorcyclists are among the most vulnerable of Eco-driving tips 2 road users – 13 were killed in Powys alone last year. About 4 years ago a young man was clocked doing 125mph up in North AGM 3 Wales; 6 hours later he was killed on the A55. It transpired that he had neither a licence nor insurance and the bike had false number plates. Vacancies 3 This, of course, was an extreme case but it highlights a very serious New members 3 problem, so it’s very encouraging to know that the fastest growing area of IAM is the motorcycle section. MWAM is playing its part too – the success of Off Road Driving 3 our new initiative under the leadership of Sean Miles has already been reported. Already he has 5 new associates and all the training places have Associate Course Dates 3 been taken up for 2007. All three of Sean’s first associates are training to be observers.
