Playing the black side of a Modern Benoni, Yu successfully countered Li's attempts to complicate the position and had in fact seized the initiative by the time the draw was agreed. Li and Lu Shanglei remain tied in second place a half a point behind after the latter also successfully held off Vladislav Tkachiev but are joined by Avetik Grigoryan who won convincingly with the white pieces against Oleg Korneev. Still in contention with five points and sharing fiifth place are Tkachiev, Boris Chatalbashev and Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, Wang Chen and Wei Yi after drawing each other, together with winners in Ivan Sokolov, Viorel Iordachescu, Surya Sekhar Ganguly, and Xu Jun. Issue 5 Page 2 2nd Indonesia Open Chess Championship 2012 Round 6 Report After the rest day the players are facing a day that might prove decisive in deciding the winners. After all rounds 6 and 7 are being played on the third and final day of double rounds and tiredness must now start to become a factor. In round 6, as in previous rounds, the players were all ready to fight. On top board leader Yu Yangyi shocked Surya Shekar Ganguly in the opening and after a horrible blunder went on to score an important win in just 15 moves. Yu is now on 5.5/6. In second place half a point behind are two other Chinese players, Lu Shanglei who handed the top seed Ivan Sokolov his second loss and pre tournament favourite and defending champion Li Chao who outplayed Merab Gagunashvili in the endgame. Both Nguyen Ngoc Truong and Avetik Grigoryan, although also still unbeaten, lost ground with their draw and are now joined by Vladislav Tkachiev, Wei Yi, Wang Yunguo, Oleg Korneev, and Wang Chen, all sharing 4th-10th places on 4.5/6. Resta il fatto che l'Italia è stata una delle protagoniste del campionato europeo senior a squadre, disputato quest'anno a Rogaska Slatina (Slovenia) dal 27 marzo al 4 aprile. Protagonista al punto che, opposta al terzo turno sulla prima scacchiera alla corazzata Russia '1', da sempre dominatrice del torneo, ha imposto un sorprendente 2-2, rimanendo in corsa per il podio fino all'ultimo turno: quando, purtroppo, i sogni degli azzurri si sono infranti contro il più quotato Montenegro (nella foto la sfida) , che si è imposto 3-1. Tutti i componenti della squadra italiana, comunque, hanno contribuito a conseguire un ottimo quinto posto, che migliora di altre due posizioni il settimo ottenuto lo scorso anno in Grecia: Stefano Tatai ha totalizzato 5 punti su 9 in prima scacchiera (praticamente su 8, visto che al secondo turno ha perso senza giocare), Sergio Mariotti 4 su 8 in seconda, poi Carlo Micheli 6 su 9, Antonio Rosino 3,5 su 6 e Giuseppe Valenti 2,5 su 4.

We now have a sole leader on 4.5/5 in China's Yu Yangyi who beat the Russian GM Dimitri Bocharov with the black pieces in the top board match up. Several players had the chance to match that score but the draws by Lu Shanglei, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, Surya Sekhar Ganguly, Avetik Grigorian and Merab Ganunashvili allowed Li Chao, a convincing winner over Dao Thien Hai, Ivan Sokolov who downed Xiu Deshun, and Boris Chatalbashev who beat Marat Dzhumaev to be the eight players in second place half a point behind on 4/5. Local hope Susanto Megaranto remained in contention with an unbeaten 3.5/5 after full blooded battle with IM Oliver Dimakiling that ended in a draw. They are joined by Bocharov, John Paul Gomez, Viorel Iordachescu, Wei Yi, Vladislav Tkachiev, Oleg Korneev, Ehsan Ghaem Maghami, Xu Jun, Nguyen Duc Hoa, Wang Chen, and Wan Yunguo.
