Yu who now has seven points from eight games has only one real challenger left in defending champion Li Chao who beat Armenia's Avetik Grigoryan to be a half point behind on 6.5/8. But Yu and Li have already met each other in round seven where a hard fought game ended in a draw. Top seeded Ivan Sokolov who now represents the Nederlands recorded his sixth win to be on 6/8, this time over at the expense of Boris Chatalbashev of Bulgaria. He will now be playing Yu in the final round with the white pieces and still has a chance for a share of first place if he wins. Also in contention a point behind the leader and joining Sokolov in third to fifth places are Vladislav Tkachiev who plays for France and Vietnam's Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son. Yet the tournament leader after seven rounds of play insists that all he wants to do is to play well and will be talking the tournament game by game. This has always been the approach of the young 18 year old chessplayer who finished in an unbeaten fifth place in the recent World Junior Chess Championship despite playing the best chess there. Yu speaks very little other languages beside his native Mandarin and we have to thank Li Chao for helping translate the questions and answers for this interview.

We now have a sole leader on 4.5/5 in China's Yu Yangyi who beat the Russian GM Dimitri Bocharov with the black pieces in the top board match up. Several players had the chance to match that score but the draws by Lu Shanglei, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, Surya Sekhar Ganguly, Avetik Grigorian and Merab Ganunashvili allowed Li Chao, a convincing winner over Dao Thien Hai, Ivan Sokolov who downed Xiu Deshun, and Boris Chatalbashev who beat Marat Dzhumaev to be the eight players in second place half a point behind on 4/5. Local hope Susanto Megaranto remained in contention with an unbeaten 3.5/5 after full blooded battle with IM Oliver Dimakiling that ended in a draw. They are joined by Bocharov, John Paul Gomez, Viorel Iordachescu, Wei Yi, Vladislav Tkachiev, Oleg Korneev, Ehsan Ghaem Maghami, Xu Jun, Nguyen Duc Hoa, Wang Chen, and Wan Yunguo.
