OzHarvest BOOK OF THANKS Annual Report 2013 THANKs a million ozharvest is constantly surrounded by magnificent individuals and organisations from volunteers, in-kind sponsors, food and financial donors and ambassadors who give their services, time money, food or goods so generously. This support allows OzHarvest to continue doing what we do — that is rescue food, redistribute it to people in need and continue to educate people about food waste, the environment, sustainability and food security. We must recognise some incredible organisations that go above and beyond and continue to help us, so that we can help our most vulnerable Australians. As we have thousands of supporters who are so important and who we would like to recognise, we have again created this Book of Thanks to acknowledge each and every one of you. Please forgive us if we have missed your name, and please do tell us so that we can ensure it appears in our Book of Thanks next year. Thank you everyone for everything you’ve done for OzHarvest. Unprecedented levels of availability and aggressive marketing of unhealthy foods are key drivers of obesity and diet-related conditions including high blood pressure, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, dental caries and some cancers. Australia has some of the highest obesity rates in the world: nearly two-thirds of Australian adults and one in four children are overweight or obese.1 Poor diet is estimated to account for at least 25,000 Australian deaths each year.2 The Australian Dietary Guidelines provide sensible advice on how to promote health and well-being by recommending that Australians eat a wide variety of nutritious foods from five groups that include fruit, vegetables, grain foods, lean proteins and dairy. They also recommend drinking plenty of water.3 Unfortunately, fewer than one in 10 Australians consumes a diet in line with these recommendations.4 Key problems with the Australian diet include inadequate consumption of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts, seeds and fibre, and excess consumption of unhealthy, often highly-processed, foods.

  • Franchise Redress Submission
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ FRANCHISE REDRESS SUBMISSION The operation and effectiveness of the Franchising Code of Conduct May 2018 Michael Fraser | Maddison Johnstone We had hoped to put in a more comprehensive submission to this inquiry, however we did not anticipate just how many distressed franchisees would reach out to us. They were from over 40 brands. This was naturally all consuming for us. One of the biggest themes for discussion was fear of franchisor retribution when it comes to existing franchisees. Even though it could be seen as a contempt of parliament to retaliate against a franchisee for putting in a submission, franchisors have subtle ways of exacting revenge which is hard to detect. Franchisees are acutely aware of this and can find themselves being terminated shortly after by failing store cleanliness audits etc. Investigating Corporate Misconduct Franchise Redress was co-Founded by Michael Fraser and Maddison Johnstone in 2017 after observing systemic abuses in the franchising industry. These observations were formed when - Michael helped expose systemic wage fraud at 7-Eleven stores across Australia, leading to over $150 million in backpay to over 3600 workers (as of February 2018), - we travelled Australia investigating Domino’s Pizza in early 2017 after a number of franchisees raised concerns about the profitability of their stores. They made contact with our office after 7-Eleven’s misconduct was exposed, and - investigating complaints and tip-offs that Retail Food Group were strategically milking franchisees of their last dollar, with many becoming financially destitute. We endeavour to represent the issues and concerns in the franchise industry as a whole, and do not purport to side with just franchisees or franchisors.
