TC 2014; 6(2): 278–296 Corinne Pache Theban Walls in Homeric Epic DOI 10.1515/tc-2014-0015 Throughout the Iliad, the Greeks at Troy often refer to the wars at Thebes in their speeches, and several important warriors fighting on the Greek side at Troy also fought at Thebes and are related to Theban heroes who besieged the Boeotian city a generation earlier. The Theban wars thus stand in the shadow of the story of war at Troy, another city surrounded by walls supposed to be impregnable. In the Odyssey, the Theban connections are less central, but nevertheless significant as one of our few sources concerning the building of the Theban walls. In this essay, I analyze Theban traces in Homeric epic as they relate to city walls. Since nothing explicitly concerning walls remains in the extant fragments of the Theban Cycle, we must look to Homeric poetry for formulaic and thematic elements that can be connected with Theban epic. -

THE INTERPRETATION OF THEBAN MYTHS IN LATE MEDIAEVAL LITERATURE David Anderson For Richard Hamilton Green The modern term "classical myth" covers a range of legendary subjects which mediaeval writers commonly distinguished as tabula or historia; or, with the addition of a third term, as 1) things which could have happened and did happen (historia); 2) things which could have happened but did not (argumentum) ; and 3) things which could not have happened and did not happen, such as the preposterous high jinks of the pagan gods (fabula).* Though the mediaeval Latin word historia and the derivative loan-words in vernacular languages, such as Middle English "storie," do not correspond exactly to the meaning of Modern English "history," they stood always and clearly in contrast to fabula, which denoted a lie, a falsehood. By the fourteenth century, writers were using this pair of terms with the informality accorded an unquestioned convention. In one well-known example, Chaucer's Physician remarks that the tale of Appius and Virginia "is no fable, / but knowen for historial thyng notable" (154-55); and in another, Boccaccio distinguishes the fabulous from the historical characters and events in Vergil's Aeneid, book 4 (Genealogie 14.13). Accounts of the "myths" of the ancient cities of Thebes and Troy often focussed on the question of fabulous and historical elements in the received sources: Guido delle Colonne, for one, sets it as his task to "separate the true from the false among the things which were written of [Trojan] history in Latin 2 books," an assertion which John Lydgate translates and expands in the prologue to his Troy Book. -

Lecture 31 Good morning and welcome to LLT121 Classical Mythology. Today we’re going to be picking up with what I like to think of as the ultimate soap opera of Greek mythology, the so-called Theban Saga. For those of you who have honored me with your presence this morning, I’d like to remind you that Thebes is the capital of Boeotia. Boeotia is the city-state right next to Athens, and Attica. Where, as you have heard me say a thousand times before, most of surviving Greek literature comes from. It follows, I believe, that Thebes and Boeotia are going to get the proverbial bum rap, as they most certainly will. The Theban Saga, however, begins, not in Thebes, but in ancient Palestine. Ancient Palestine is located on the present day site of modern Palestine—wouldn’t you know?—which is right around here. Thebes is up here in a land known as Phoenicia, but now known as either Lebanon or something else. The story involved a boy, a girl, and a bull. The boy and girl are the daughters of King Cadmus and Mrs. King Cadmus of Tyre. They have two kids, a girl named Europa and a boy named Cadmus. Europa is a very beautiful young woman. One day Europa happens to be just walking by the seashore and a very handsome bull comes up to her. The handsome bull is a very charming and friendly bull. If you care to go back and read the appropriate section from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, please hold firmly onto your stomach, because it is rather humorous. -

Divine Riddles: A Sourcebook for Greek and Roman Mythology March, 2014 E. Edward Garvin, Editor What follows is a collection of excerpts from Greek literary sources in translation. The intent is to give students an overview of Greek mythology as expressed by the Greeks themselves. But any such collection is inherently flawed: the process of selection and abridgement produces a falsehood because both the narrative and meta-narrative are destroyed when the continuity of the composition is interrupted. Nevertheless, this seems the most expedient way to expose students to a wide range of primary source information. I have tried to keep my voice out of it as much as possible and will intervene as editor (in this Times New Roman font) only to give background or exegesis to the text. All of the texts in Goudy Old Style are excerpts from Greek or Latin texts (primary sources) that have been translated into English. Ancient Texts In the field of Classics, we refer to texts by Author, name of the book, book number, chapter number and line number.1 Every text, regardless of language, uses the same numbering system. Homer’s Iliad, for example, is divided into 24 books and the lines in each book are numbered. Hesiod’s Theogony is much shorter so no book divisions are necessary but the lines are numbered. Below is an example from Homer’s Iliad, Book One, showing the English translation on the left and the Greek original on the right. When citing this text we might say that Achilles is first mentioned by Homer in Iliad 1.7 (i.7 is also acceptable). -

By “preclassical” I mean a phase that predates the reception of Homeric poetry in Athens during the classical period of the fifth century BCE. A clear sign of such preclassical epic, I argue, is a pattern of coexistence between Homeric and Hesiodic poetry.
