DOI: 10.1515/orhu-2018-0030 Abstract We describe the migration pathways of 12 Peregrine Falcons Falco peregrinus cali dus breeding on the Yamal Peninsula, Russia. Overall, we tracked 30 complete (17 autumn and 13 spring) and 5 incomplete seasonal migration routes. Winter ranges extended from the Atlantic coast of southern Portugal in the west to Kish Island in the Arabian Gulf in the east, and from Krasnodar in southern Russia in the north to South Sudan. Eight birds were tracked to their wintering sites, with migration pathways ranging from 3,557 km to 8,114 km, taking 14 to 61 days to complete. Birds spent an average of 190 days in their winter ranges (range 136 to 212 days, N = 14), and departure on spring migration took place in April. The home ranges used by win- tering Peregrines were varied including coastal habitats, agricultural landscapes, savannah, desert and an urban city. Departure from breeding areas took place in September with birds returning in May. Peregrines exhibited a high degree of fidelity to their winter ranges, with four birds tracked over three successive migrations until the 2012 breeding season. -

Transportation Operations Task Force Meeting Highlights
TRANSPORTATION OPERATIONS TASK FORCE MEETING HIGHLIGHTS March 18, 2013 1. Welcome and Introductions Bill Ragozine, Cross County Connection TMA (CCCTMA), welcomed members and thanked them for attending. 2. New Transportation Operation Task Force Chairperson It was announced that Lou Belmonte, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), will become the new Chair of the Transportation Operations Task Force (TOTF) beginning next meeting. Ek Phomsavath, Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), has accepted the role of Vice-Chair. Bill Ragozine was presented a certificate of appreciation and thanked for all of his hard work and effort for the past several years. 3. Two Minute Agency Reports Each person in attendance introduced themselves and added any relevant ITS and operations updates from their agency. Some of the highlights include: Pennsylvania Department of Transportation: PennDOT will be initiating three additional Emergency Service Patrol routes operating in the AM and PM peak periods along the US 30 Bypass, US 422, and PA 309. Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC): The PTC has initiated a statewide CCTV project to put cameras at each of their interchanges. Another project will be installing 15 Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) between Reading and Willow Grove interchanges. Cross County Connection TMA: The CCTMA has developed a new smart phone app that allows users to check real-time traffic conditions and view live traffic cameras at intersections known for congestion in South Jersey. Since the last TOTF meeting, DVRPC has started coordinating with Haverford and Lower Merion Police Departments to use RIMIS during the USGA Open Golf Championship this June. -

Chapter 51 Animal Behavior Lecture Outline Overview: Shall We Dance? • Red-crowned cranes (Grus japonensis) gather in groups to dance, prance, stretch, bow, and leap. They grab bits of plants, sticks, and feathers with their bills and toss them into the air. • How does a crane decide that it is time to dance? In fact, why does it dance at all? • Animal behavior is based on physiological systems and processes. • An individual behavior is an action carried out by the muscular or hormonal system under the control of the nervous system in response to a stimulus. • Behavior contributes to homeostasis; an animal must acquire nutrients for digestion and find a partner for sexual reproduction. • All of animal physiology contributes to behavior, while animal behavior influences all of physiology. • Being essential for survival and reproduction, animal behavior is subject to substantial selective pressure during evolution. • Behavioral selection also acts on anatomy because body form and appearance contribute directly to the recognition and communication that underlie many behaviors. Concept 51.1: A discrete sensory input is the stimulus for a wide range of animal behaviors. • An animal’s behavior is the sum of its responses to external and internal stimuli. Classical ethology presaged an evolutionary approach to behavioral biology. • In the mid-20th century, pioneering behavioral biologists developed the discipline of ethology, the scientific study of how animals behave in their natural environments. • Niko Tinbergen, of the Netherlands, suggested four questions that must be answered to fully understand any behavior. 1. What stimulus elicits the behavior, and what physiological mechanisms mediate the response? 2. -
