DOI: 10.1515/orhu-2018-0030 Abstract We describe the migration pathways of 12 Peregrine Falcons Falco peregrinus cali dus breeding on the Yamal Peninsula, Russia. Overall, we tracked 30 complete (17 autumn and 13 spring) and 5 incomplete seasonal migration routes. Winter ranges extended from the Atlantic coast of southern Portugal in the west to Kish Island in the Arabian Gulf in the east, and from Krasnodar in southern Russia in the north to South Sudan. Eight birds were tracked to their wintering sites, with migration pathways ranging from 3,557 km to 8,114 km, taking 14 to 61 days to complete. Birds spent an average of 190 days in their winter ranges (range 136 to 212 days, N = 14), and departure on spring migration took place in April. The home ranges used by win- tering Peregrines were varied including coastal habitats, agricultural landscapes, savannah, desert and an urban city. Departure from breeding areas took place in September with birds returning in May. Peregrines exhibited a high degree of fidelity to their winter ranges, with four birds tracked over three successive migrations until the 2012 breeding season. -

The observation was made on 13 January 2013 about 40 minutes before sunrise, in the dark. Although there were sparse street lamps and car traffic nearby the observation point, it is not as evenly and continuously well-lit as urban areas. This suggests the potential of peregrine falcon to forage successfully in non-urban habitat under low light conditions. Abstract: Na ostrove Hokkaido (severné Japonsko) bol pozorovaný sokol sťahovavý(Falco peregrinus) pred svitaním na ulovenej kačici divej (Anas platyrhynchos). Pozorovanie sa uskutočnilo dňa 13. januára 2013 za tmy približne 40 minút pred východom slnka. Napriek prítomnosti rozptýlených pouličných lámp a svetiel áut cestnej premávky, miesto pozorovania nebolo osvetlené tak ako v zastavaných oblastiach. Z tohto prípadu vyplýva potenciálna schopnosť sokola sťahovavého úspešne loviť v neurbanizovanej krajine aj za znížených svetelných podmienok. This is also the fifth record of a vagrant Peregrine Falcon on Christmas Island, although the others could not be identified to subspecies. Introduction On 5 January 2010, MC and AS saw a Peregrine Falcon Falco peregrinus of the Siberian subspecies calidus on Christmas Island, Australian territory in the Indian Ocean. At 0630 h we were standing in the car park in front of the clubhouse of the golf course, surveying the birds on the escarpment forming the amphitheatre on which the course is constructed. The morning was fine, cloudless and calm, and as we were looking due west, several Nankeen Kestrels F. cenchroides perched on vantage points on the cliff-face showed prominently their pale underparts, making them highly visible in the direct sunlight. One bird within the range of surrounding Kestrels appeared somewhat larger but otherwise similarly very pale. It was perched 500 m away on the highest rock on the ridge with just the blue sky as background, completely exposed, facing slightly to our left. Its identity could not be determined using binoculars, but viewed through a tripod-mounted Swarovski HDS 65 telescope with a 20–60× zoom eyepiece we immediately identified the bird as an adult Siberian Peregrine Falcon. -

STATE OF WASHINGTON October 2016 Periodic Status Review for the Peregrine Falcon Mark S. Vekasy and Gerald E. Hayes Washington Department of FISH AND WILDLIFE Wildlife Program The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife maintains a list of endangered, threatened, and sensitive species (Washington Administrative Codes 232-12-014 and 232-12-011). In 1990, the Washington Wildlife Commission adopted listing procedures developed by a group of citizens, interest groups, and state and federal agencies (Washington Administrative Code 232-12-297). The procedures include how species listings will be initiated, criteria for listing and delisting, a require¬ment for public review, the development of recovery or management plans, and the periodic review of listed species. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is directed to conduct reviews of each endangered, threatened, or sensitive wildlife species at least every five years after the date of its listing by the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission. The periodic status reviews are designed to include an update of the species status report to determine whether the status of the species warrants its current listing status or deserves reclassification. The agency notifies the general public and specific parties who have expressed their interest to the Department of the periodic status review at least one year prior to the five-year period so that they may submit new scientific data to be included in the review. The agency notifies the public of its findings at least 30 days prior to presenting the findings to the Fish and Wildlife Commission. In addition, if the agency determines that new information suggests that the classification of a species should be changed from its present state, the agency prepares documents to determine the environmental consequences of adopting the recommendations pursuant to requirements of the State Environmental Policy Act. -

Town of Superior Raptor Monitoring 2020 Summary Red-tailed Hawk with nestlings Sponsored by the Open Space Advisory Committee Introduction: 2019-2020 marked the second full session of a raptor monitoring program sponsored by the Town of Superior’s Open Space Advisory Committee. The program has several goals: determining what raptor species are present in Superior, learning what areas raptors use at different times of the year, monitoring any nesting activity, working to prevent unnecessary disturbance to raptors, identifying habitats to protect, and providing relevant education to the Town’s residents. Twelve volunteer observers, all Superior residents, monitored ten general locations approximately weekly between early winter and late summer. They identified 14 species of raptors, including eagles, falcons, hawks, and owls. Some of these species use open spaces in Superior only intermittently, for hunting or migration. However, monitors determined that four species nested in or adjacent to Superior in 2020; 14 nests were located and all but one of them produced fledglings. The nesting species were Great Horned Owl, Red-tailed Hawk, Cooper’s Hawk, and American Kestrel. These four raptors are well known for being able to adapt to living near humans and to reproduce successfully in a suburban environment. Methods and Results: Volunteer observers received orientation training, monitored designated areas regularly between early winter and late summer, and submitted observation reports to the project coordinator. Present forest conditions – loss of a herbaceous and shrubby understory, reductions in the amount of older forests, and increased areas of dense tree regeneration – reflect the extent of human influence on these forests. These changes may also be affecting goshawk populations. Information on goshawk nesting habitat and foraging behavior, and the food and habitats of selected goshawk prey, was therefore synthesized to develop a set of management objectives, desired forest conditions, and management recommendations. Key objectives of the guidelines are to provide (1) nesting, post-fledging, and foraging areas for goshawks, and (2) habitat to support abundant populations of 14 primary goshawk prey. Thinning trees in the understory, creating small openings in the forest, and prescribed fires should help produce and maintain the desired forest conditions. Other habitat elements critical for maintaining both goshawk and prey populations include abundant snags and large downed logs, woody debris, interspersion of different tree sizes across the landscape, and the majority of a goshawk’s home range in older-aged forests.
