JOB DESCRIPTION

University College School is an independent day school currently catering mainly for boys, with the exception of the pre-prep School which admits both boys and girls. The UCS Foundation (Foundation) comprises the Senior School at Frognal, with 735 boys aged 11 to 18 (from September 2008 girls have joined the Six Form); the Junior Branch, with 230 boys aged 7 to 11; and The Phoenix School, a pre-prep and nursery school which caters for about 130 boys and girls aged between 3 and 7.

Job Title: Design & Technology Technician

Location: Frognal

2 JOB PURPOSE

To support and assist the teaching and learning activities of the Design & Technology Department. Temporary (3 month) contract.

3 DIMENSIONS

The Design & Technology Technician reports to the Head of Design and Technology (HoD) with the Director of Operations having overall responsibility.

The position requires a strong and co-operative working relationship with teachers, support staff and pupils within the Design and Technology department as well as, on occasion, with the Art Department staff and pupils.

4 KEY RESULT AREAS

1. To assist Design and Technology (D&T) staff in developing and preparing appropriate resources for teaching and learning. 2. Preparing teaching and workshop areas with the necessary materials/equipment. 3. Ensuring that lesson areas are cleaned/tidied up after practical teaching activities. 4. To provide technical support to staff during lesson time as required. 5. To maintain and monitor consumables and equipment in D&T. 6. Ordering and purchasing of stock as required, including maintaining budget and expenditure information. 7. Under the direction of the HoD, to ensure that all Health & safety requirements are met, by assisting in review procedures and in the preparation of safety procedures and risk assessments. 8. Ensuring that workshops are fitted with required safety information and that machinery, including CAM, is maintained regularly and incompliance with legislation. 9. To assist teaching staff in promoting and raising the profile of D&T within and outside School. 10. Organising displays, exhibitions, digital displays and competitions as required. 11. To support the development and delivery of Computer Aided Design & Manufacture in D&T.

5 REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION

SKILL ESSENTIAL DESIRABLE Ability to work independently with little Experience in a similar role in a school, supervision college or university Articulate, accurate and efficient Experience in the educational field and the desire to develop in the role Ability to use own initiative, following a task Experience of working within a Craft or through to a successful conclusion; alternatively, Design background seeking out opportunities to make a contribution to the department and work with others Highly organised with the ability to organise Experience of using Computer Aided others and to manage deadlines whilst Manufacturing techniques e.g. 3D Printers, maintaining high quality standards Laser Cutters, CNC routers Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to act professionally at all levels High attention to detail Flexible and able to multitask Team player ICT skills – confident with using MS Office and ICT skills – Experience of using Computer Adobe Photoshop Aided Design (CAD) eg Solidworks, Illustrator or CorelDraw
