COURSE DESCRIPTION AND LECTURE SYLLABUS

Monday and Wednesday 3:30pm-4:45pm Silver Building Room 207 for Lectures Thursday and Friday Silver Building Room 203 for Labs

Course Director: Frederick Naftolin, M.D., Ph.D. ([email protected]; 212 263-2823) Laboratory Supervisor: Fang Helen Wang, Ph.D. ([email protected]; 646 754-2622) Adjunct Instructors: Kirtan Kaur, M.S. ([email protected]) Denis Schapira Wajman, M.D. ([email protected]) Vanessa Lynn Cortes, B.A. ([email protected]) Course Assistant: Mitra Ahmadi, B.S. ([email protected])

Reference Textbook: Human Reproductive Biology, 4th Edition; Jones and Lopez, Academic Press, 2014 Supplemental Reading: (1) Middlesex, Jeffrey Eugenides, Picador, New York, 2002, (2) Close Encounters with Humankind, Sang-Hee Lee, W. W. Norton, New York, 2018

Course Organization: The course has two components: lectures and laboratories. The labs are also used to allow individual discussion of material from the lectures. Adjunct instructors also have student office hours, by appointment. Course Grades: The lecture portion will account for 75% of the course final grade. This is comprised of two exams, each covering approximately half of the course and accounting for 35% of the final grade, and a debate-based term paper accounting for 5% of the final grade. The lab component will account for 25% of the final grade. Attendance to the lab will be part of the lab score. The lecture exam questions will be taken from the actual lectures, not the reference text or other sources.

The midterm lecture exam will be graded on a curve in which the average grade is B-average, and the grade submitted to the administration as the mid-term grade; however, the midterm grade is not used in calculating the final grade.

The student’s final grade will be comprised of the mid-term exam score plus the final exam score plus the debate paper score and the lab score. The scores from all of the students will be used to make the curve from which the final grades will be reported. This will be a curve made up from the actual class scores over the term, targeting B- as the average grade. There is no fixed number/percent of A’s, B’s, etc.
