Student Paper PARICHAY PATRA Spectres of the New Wave : The State of the Work of Mourning, and the New Cinema Aesthetic in a Regional Industry 1 Introduction My title refers to Derrida’s controversial account of his concern with Marx amidst the din and bustle of the ‘end of history’. Time was certainly out of joint and the pluralistic outlook of the great thinker was pitted against the monolith that orthodox communists used to uphold. My primary concern in the paper would be an account of the Malayalam film industry in its post-New Wave phase as well as a handful of filmmakers whose works seem to be difficult to categorize. Within the domain of the popular and amidst the mourning from the film society circle for the movement that lasted no longer than a decade, these films evoke the popular memory of the New Wave. Though up in arms against the worthy ancestors, these filmmakers are unable to conceal their indebtedness to the latter. The New Wave too was not without its heterogeneity, and the “disjointed now” that I am talking about is something “whose border would still be determinable”. I would like to consider the possibility of moving towards translocal contexts without shifting our focus from a specific site of inquiry which, in this case, is Malayalam cinema. The paper will concentrate upon the phenomenon known JOURNAL OF THE MOVING IMAGE 81 as the resurfacing/resurgence of art cinema aesthetics in Indian cinema. Recent scholarly interest in the history of this forgotten film movement is noticeable, more so because it was ignored in the age of disciplinary incarnation of cinematic scholarship in India.

  • History of Indian Cinema.Pdf
CHAPTER – 2 A BRIEF HISTORY OF INDIAN CINEMA Indian films are unquestionably the most –seen movies in the world. Not just talking about the billion- strong audiences in India itself, where 12 million people are said to go to the cinema every day, but of large audiences well beyond the Indian subcontinent and the Diaspora, in such unlikely places as Russia, China, the Middle East, the Far East Egypt, Turkey and Africa. People from very different cultural and social worlds have a great love for Indian popular cinema, and many have been Hindi Films fans for over fifty years. Indian cinema is world – famous for the staggering amount of films it produces: the number is constantly on the increase, and recent sources estimate that a total output of some 800 films a year are made in different cities including Madrass , Bangalore , Calcutta and Hyderabad . Of this astonishing number, those films made in Bombay, in a seamless blend of Hindi and Urdu, have the widest distribution within India and Internationally. The two sister languages are spoken in six northern states and understood by over 500 million people on the Indian sub – continent alone – reason enough for Hindi and Urdu to be chosen above the fourteen official Indian languages to become the languages of Indian Popular cinema when sound came to the Indian Silver screen in 1931 . Silent Era – The cinematographe (from where we have the name cinema) invented by the Lumiere brothers functioned better the Kinetoscope of Edison and Dickson. The Lumiere brothers who invented the cinematographe started projection of short (very short, one to two minutes long) films for the Parsian public on November 28, 1895.

  • Mapping the Margins: an Interview with Meena Kandasamy Conducted at Sacred Heart College in Kochi, India on 12 November 20151 Sathyaraj Venkatesan and Rajesh James
ariel: a review of international english literature Vol. 49 No. 1 Pages 143–154 Copyright © 2018 Johns Hopkins University Press and the University of Calgary Interview Mapping the Margins: An Interview with Meena Kandasamy Conducted at Sacred Heart College in Kochi, India on 12 November 20151 Sathyaraj Venkatesan and Rajesh James Abstract: Caste-based discrimination is a grotesque socio-politi- cal reality in India. The term “Dalit” (or “untouchable”) refers to a person belonging to the lowest caste in the traditional Indian caste system. Inspired by B. R. Ambedkar, a Western-educated intellectual and the chief architect of the Indian constitution, Dalit writers have produced stories of resistance, stories of caste discrimination and social ostracization, and alternative and par- allel visions of casteless societies. As an author of contemporary Dalit writings, Meena Kandasamy describes a broad spectrum of Dalit experiences, and she voices concerns that are often unar- ticulated in the mainstream Indian literary canon. In so doing, Kandasamy not only helps to interpret the reality confronting Dalits but also reclaims their lost voices and identity. In conver- sation, Kandasamy speaks very much the way she writes—with bluntness and warmth. Keywords: Dalit, caste system, autobiography, translation, The Gypsy Goddess Meena Kandasamy is an Indian poet, translator, fiction writer, and Dalit activist based in Chennai, India. Unlike many of her contemporaries such as Preeti Shenoy, Kiran Manral, and Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, her oeuvre is a response to issues related to caste politics, feminism, and gender violence that plague contemporary India. As the first Indian woman writer to champion the cause of Dalit individuals and their com- 143 Sathyaraj Venkatesen & Rajesh James munities in an upper-caste majoritarian India, Kandasamy is an out- spoken critic of the establishment and a spokesperson for the “others” and underprivileged in her society.
