Downloaded from http://hdl.handle.net/10072/48836 Griffith Research Online https://research-repository.griffith.edu.au Desiring Dexter: the pangs and pleasures of serial killer body technique Stephanie Green1 School of Humanities, Griffith University, Gold Coast, Australia Abstract The television series Dexter uses the figure of appealing monstrosity to unfold troubled relationships between corporeality, spectatorship and desire. Through a plastic-wrapped display of body horror, lightly veiled by suburban romance, Dexter turns its audience on to the consuming sensations of blood, death and dismemberment while simultaneously alluding to its own narrative and ethical contradictions. The excitations of Dexter are thus encapsulated within a tension between form and content as ambivalent and eroticised desire; both for heroic transgression and narrative resolution. Arguably, however, it is Dexter’s execution of a carefully developed serial killer body technique which makes this series so compelling. Through an examination of Dexter and his plotted body moves, this paper explores the representations of intimacy and murderous identity in this contemporary example of domestic screen horror entertainment. Keywords: Dexter, body-technique, desire, crime television, horror 1 [email protected] Launched in 2006, the television drama series Dexter has been a ratings record- breaker for its network producers (Showtime, CBS 2007-2011).

Author: Elisabete Lopes Affiliation: ULICES (University of Lisbon Centre for English Studies) / IPS (Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal) The Curious Case of Vanessa Ives: The Portrait of a Witch in Penny Dreadful “I see things sometimes. I am affected by forces beyond our world” (Miss Ives, “Ressurection”). Penny Dreadful as Vanessa’s Journey into the Demimonde Penny Dreadful (2014-2015)1 is a TV show written and created by John Logan that takes the viewers to the Victorian London and revisits some epistolary Gothic literary works, bringing back to life characters such as the charismatic Dracula, Dr. Victor Frankenstein or Dorian Gray. Although remarkably influenced by the plots of these and other Gothic novels of the epoch, it is Bram Stoker’s Dracula that stands out as being the fundamental spinal cord of this reanimated literary and visually outstanding visual narrative. Indeed, capturing the sensational thrills provided by the penny dreadful cheaply sold in the streets at that period, the show is also enriched by the superb quality inherent in the characters’ dialogues and sublimely tainted with blood, gore and supernatural horrors. Emerging from this Gothic narrative’s mist, is the slender figure of Miss Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), the protagonist of the show and one of the characters that John Logan creatively crafted. Emanating strangeness and being the owner of a profound gaze, she is liable to stand out amidst the crowd due to a dress code that verges on steam punk, elegance and lady-like manners. On the other hand, the intricacies of her intellect, her preternatural talents and the aura of mystery that surrounds her like a transparent veil, lend her an enigmatic nature.

William Shakespeare on Film, Video and Stage Titles in bold red font with an asterisk (*) represent the crème de la crème – first choice titles in each category. These are the titles you’ll probably want to explore first. Titles in bold black font are the second- tier – outstanding films that are the next level of artistry and craftsmanship. Once you have experienced the top tier, these are where you should go next. They may not represent the highest achievement in each genre, but they are definitely a cut above the rest. Finally, the titles which are in a regular black font constitute the rest of the films within the genre. I would be the first to admit that some of these may actually be worthy of being “ranked” more highly, but it is a ridiculously subjective matter. humanities Article Penny Dreadful’s Queer Orientalism: The Translations of Ferdinand Lyle Jamil Mustafa Department of English Studies, Lewis University, Romeoville, IL 60446, USA; [email protected] Received: 8 August 2020; Accepted: 3 September 2020; Published: 9 September 2020 Abstract: Cultural expressions of Orientalism, the Gothic, and the queer are rarely studied together, though they share uncanny features including spectrality, doubling, and the return of the repressed. An ideal means of investigating these common aspects is neo-Victorian translation, which is likewise uncanny. The neo-Victorian Gothic cable television series Penny Dreadful, set mostly in fin-de-siècle London, employs the character Ferdinand Lyle, a closeted queer Egyptologist and linguist, to depict translation as both interpretation and transformation, thereby simultaneously replicating and challenging late-Victorian attitudes toward queerness and Orientalism. Keywords: Gothic; neo-Victorianism; Orientalism; Penny Dreadful; queerness; the uncanny 1. Queerness, Orientalism, and the Gothic in Penny Dreadful Orientalism, neo-Victorianism, the Gothic, the queer, and the uncanny coalesce in Penny Dreadful (2014–2016), a cable television series set mostly in 1891 and 1892 London whose title references the nineteenth-century “penny dreadfuls,” mass-market, one-penny serials that featured mysterious tales of “violence, torture, blood and gore” (Killeen 2012, p. 46). Yet in this case the photographer is Dennis Hopper and the photographs, remarkably, are never before published. Shot in Taos, New Mexico, where Hopper was based following the production of Easy Rider in the late 60s, the series was tak- en with disposable cameras and developed in drugstore photo labs. This clothbound collection documents Hopper’s friends and family among the ruins and open vistas of the desert land- scape, female nudes in shadowy interiors, road trips to and from his home state of Kansas and impromptu still lifes of discarded objects. These images, capturing iconic individuals, wide-open Western terrain and drug-addled fun, create a captivating view of the 60s and 70s that combines political idealism and opti- mism with California cool. Dennis Hopper(1936–2010) was born in Dodge City, Kansas. He first appeared on television in 1954, and quickly became a cult actor, known for films such asRebel Without a Cause (1955), Easy Rider (1969), The American Friend (1977), Apocalypse Now (1979), Blue Velvet (1986) and Hoosiers (1986). In 1988, he directed the critically acclaimed Colors.
